As long as the owner had a USB drive installed and the dashcam feature enabled, and I don't see why not since I believe storage comes pre-installed, there should be video from 4 angles. That would be incredible to see and useful for investigators, though it would be disturbing if the worker is seen falling to his death.

I'm a crane tech, an insider to the industry, one of the cranes I worked on after quitting the company 6 months later it collapsed on the jib. I warned the Owner multiple times to remove the crane from service as it was not safe to use, but they didn't want to take me seriously. All my experiences have been terrible, it's an absolutely abusive environment.

@@alro2434 zero. i devised and tried to implement a system to have regular code inspections, the operators got offended and complained to management. plus, its a conflict of interest to have internal employees inspect their own equipment because they make excuses like 'its coming down in 8 months we can repair it then' all while ignoring the subject matter experts

I don't know that people realize that cranes ALSO actually carry double wides and modular homes on to the lot sites etc...

These recent incidents highlight the fact that construction work is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. Civilization doesn’t exist without these guys, and we owed them much more respect. Rest in peace to the fallen worker ✊ .

I thought the lessons will be learned, problems corrected and everything would be fine-until you got to the part about the worker falling. That puts a whole different complexion on the matter. A sad day.

What amazes me that everyone walked away, looking at the aftermath I wouldn’t believe anyone “walked away”

Very thorough. --- Seems it was viewed from every angle. I've seen that hazardous crane-extension procedure in person: makes me nervous just watching, several men clambering about. --- Pity the man who fell in terror with the section. --- Even one fatality, is _too many._

Same kind of accident happened in NYC in 2009 that killed 7. They were rushing a crane “jump” to the next floor so instead of the required 8 chains, they were using a couple old worn out straps for the rigging.

Chances are someone was taking short cuts, not following approved procedures. Same as those guys dismantling a tower crane that were taking out the bolts before the section was attached to the crane lifting them out.

Maxim is a crane rental company. Sometimes, you will have an operator come with the crane, or you may have your own operators. If this was operator error, then Maxim may not be at fault. Depends on who was operating the crane.

If it's not operator error, and a mechanical failure, it's the inspecting engineer's responsibility, as hardware and structural members must be NDT yearly, and the erector crew inspects the jacking cage prior to operation, and the operator checks on the crane before he starts the shift.

I'm going to go ahead and say as an educated guess that they did not operate the crane and that one of the subcontractors most likely hired by the project manager most likely did. I used to work for one and when I would order large equipment our subcontractors or whoever would man that controls of it not anyone from the company I always hated that because I didn't honestly trust our guys that much.. a lot of subcontractors and contractors cut corners and I've seen it so I would have rather have had someone trained from the company also to avoid any other liabilities that are unnecessary

You will notice the crane has a load in its hook, this is to balance the crane while the tower section is being inserted from the platform of the external climbing frame(the red structure at the top of the tower). The tower section which fell was sitting on the platform, not suspended from the crane's load line.

How are they going to tear down the crane now? don't they need this platform to take sections out too? seems like a logistical nightmare... I guess it's too high for your average telescopic crane..

@@DrTheRich They will repair the platform and continue to jump the crane and then take it down when the building is finished, The platform that holds the additional tower section failed which can be repaired. There's nothing structurally wrong with the crane itself, so no need to "tear it down".

Thanks Jeff for getting on top of this deal quite quickly. Prayers for the gentleman that Lost his life. This could have been a lot worse, one thing for sure. Somebody made a bad decision here. You need the best, of the best doing this type of engineering build.

I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale in the 70's-80's. It's crazy that there's all those skyscrapers now downtown. I remember when the Landmark Bank Bldg. and the International Gold Bullion Exchange Bldg. were the only 2 tall buildings in downtown when I moved away in 1990.

I was born in Miami but grew up in Broward. I remember those buildings. I left in 2002, moved to Brevard which is sadly, being developed rapidly, just like Ft. Laud. The whole state is being paved over! Broward is a hell hole, would never go back. I remember there was practically nothing west of 441 except a few small (back then) neighborhoods like Margate. This was late 50s-early 60s. I think Coral Springs, if I remember was just a small area.

@@zsigzsagMy earliest memories start around the 70s. I remember University Dr. was the outer limits. Any further west was considered the boonies. Cow pastures and orange groves, with the occasional housing development sprinkled in. I remember the Broward Mall was cow pastures. 441 was pretty developed at that time. I lived east of US-1 but my pediatrician was out on 441 near Plantation Hospital. We would shop or go to the movies at the Lakes Mall (Jefferson's) or down in the road at the Gold Triangle department store. There was another movie theater near the Gold Triangle we would go to sometimes when some of the movies we wanted to see weren't showing at the Gateway, Sunrise, Coral Ridge or Manors theaters. Also in my high school days in the early 80's we would sneak cases of beer into the Margate drive-in and sometimes the Thunderbird drive-in. A couple places you forgot to mention west of 441 back in your day that would have been around then: Davie, Cooper City, Pembroke Pines.

Grew up in South Miami and moved to Fort Lauderdale about 10+ years ago, could only see downtown from the second story window. Now I can see a bunch of condos from inside my pool, I always joke that downtown moved to us. Not planning on staying much longer as its over crowed with people and traffic and the infrastructure can't handle anymore people but lets keep building more buildings! Plus any event or spring break makes getting anywhere in march practically impossible. I was on the bridge the morning of the collapse and the only reason I was is because the tunnel has had one lane for almost 3+ years and is a cluster F*#k

It is great that you make these analyses on equipment or engineering, etc. Very interesting indeed. Thank you, Jeff. One would argue that an accident is an accident, but if it is preventable to be mini minimized, we would like to study that. And .. spread that knowledge.

It's called 'tower crane jacking', plenty of youtubes on the process including some short automations. The platform is on the jack which sits around the mast. A new mast section is raised to the platform, the jack raises the boom section and then the new mast section is slid into place.

I think that is actually what the platform and the red rails are for, the section is slid in from that platform and when in place (hopefully) properly secured to the rest of the crane.

Rip construction worker. Thank you Jeff, you are a great content provider with passion. I work at with scissor lifts and cherry pickers and always wear my safety harness. Would the worker on that platform have had a harness?

Ex crane op here. When tower cranes fall, there is nearly always a climbing frame involved. When my crane was being raised using the frame, I would refuse to operate during to procedure. It was not mistake proof. Take the bolts out to add new tower section, while sitting in the cab above?

aren't most cranes operated by remote nowadays? And how are they going to tear down the crane now? don't they need this platform to take sections out too? seems like a logistical nightmare... I guess it's too high for your average telescopic crane..

@@DrTheRich No, anything above about 5 floors will have an operator. The crane looks within reach of a mobile at the moment. The climbing frame will just need to be replaced. The crane can do that itself or with a mobile. The damage may or may not affect how easy this is.

I'm surprised you had that option to refuse to work from the cab and structure during this procedure and still kept your job. Many contractors would just say bye bye and find someone who would take your place. I admire your determination to do what's right and keep your job

could be worse, like the guys who had to open the oven door in a commercial canning factory when a worker was missing, and they found he had accidentally been locked inside and pressure cooked. Or the ones who came in to work to find a coworker had decided to make himself "unalive" and he used the bandsaw to cut himself in half at the waist, a B&W police photo showed the scene from probably the 1970s

Why do people film in portrait mode and then have to pan the camera to the side? I really don't need to see the subject taking up the middle third of the camera and one third of sky and one third of ground.

The police response is ridiculous . There is little more reason for them there, other than three accident reports and maybe crowd control. Having lived in Fort Lauderdale there is more than enough crime going on at any given time to keep everyone of those cops busy for a week .

Obviously you don't work in law enforcement or fire. Let me educate you when it comes in through dispatch we get very spotty information from people in the area. The dispatcher most likely only heard the crane or part of the building or something panicked fell on the bridge and some cars and so it probably was made to be a lot larger or even a near bridge collapse because people are dramatic they assess the situation and then others are assign to the scene and the others will go back into the city for the rest of what's going on. Not a huge deal it's better to have more in a big situation like that then not enough. We just had some apartment fires from a dryer that was old and faulty and they sent out five districts and then called out all but two needed

If I remember correctly KAST also had a collapse of a complete concrete floor that had not achieved proper hardness around 2008 or so, which killed several workers! It was one of the Harbor House projects adjacent to Haulover Inlet. I've traveled over that 3rd Avenue bridge many times, and also on the road under the bridge, where all the debris is located, which is how you access those high rise buildings, and yacht moorings. There is also a popular bar and nightclub down there too along the New River front area.

there was only one part to drop. It didn't break of from the crane, it was a loose section they were ready to install to make the crane longer.

Wow, it's weird knowing the area where it happened; I used to visit my in-laws in Boca. Those cranes really an an incredible bit of engineering.

They were jacking the crane ( adding tower sections to increase the height .The broken rail is where they put the next section to go in the tower ..They set the tower section on that rail. then jack the cab /upper section of the crane. Then slide the piece in and bolt ip up. I ran cranes like this in Miami in the early 80's

The red section is the jacking equipment from what I was able to see looking it up online, the crane lifts a section up to the red part then the crane is jacked up while being supported by the red structure until there is enough room to fit the next section of frame. The workers secure that section and the process repeats until it is high enough and the process reverses to bring it back down. That said it appears that the frame meant to hold the sections gave way and dropped the piece that as going to be added so it doesn't appear that the crane itself is in danger of collapse but of course I am just some idiot with no clue what I am talking about and just sharing what I googled and saw. lol

I think the cause will turn out to be 21st century workmanship, particularly in the rigging of that staging platform.

the driver in the black car most certainly did not see anything zooming in on him. i mean anything at all. til it happened.

Jeff - Why would standard safety protocol not require the use of “tethering Straps/cables when rising new riser sections to the platform after being hoisted up and before disconnect from the platform that failed?… Obviously, would be difficult to know the failure was going to happen, but safety protocol should be the extensive use of redundant tethering straps to avoid such incidents in the first place. Same with any human contractors/workers, why not redundantly tethered?

@@rtyhhas Yeah, if “the sections are always lashed” as you put it, I’d say the lash or tether failed also - not just the platform. Even if the section is resting on the platform momentarily, it should have at least one tether strap connected to it and a substantial part of the jacking mechanism.

Can’t tell for sure but when jacking a crane, the sections are supposed to be cabled and or chained. But is often less expensive to cut corners and use rigging straps, as high are not designed for this specific use. Also, instead of designated anchor & attachment points, straps can and do get threaded through incorrect areas of the structure. Leading to extra wear, bending over edges, kinking, crushing, over stressing and abrasion. None of which is good for straps; and all decrease both the breaking and working strengths of a strap. You can bet that list of safety infringements, with be quite a bit longer in 2-3yrs. When something like this happens, it usually shows up an extended list of safety issues.

I'm not sure I believe that platform is meant to hold that crane section. It doesn't look like it would be strong enough to hold a picnic bench with workers.

Wouldn't the construction worker be wearing a harness and be clipped off? Thats one big drop.

If they had those big blue sections staged on that tiny platform I'm not surprised that it buckled. It's not strong enough to support that weight.

Kudos to the folks who designed and built the bridge and its deck; a three-foot hole didn't even faze it.

Those news people are so irritating. They take 1000 words to say what you do in 50, and it's clear they barely know what they're talking about (if at all).

I can't even imagine... what a terrifying incident. It could have been so much worse!

The crane itself is made of several different platforms as it goes up it builds more. So one of the platforms was not installed correctly and gave way. The whole thing very well could have gave way if it had been worse or multiple or a million other things. But yes one section of what made up the structure of the crane fell

Scary stuff, I drove on that bridge literally 2 hours before it happened on that Wednesday. When I drove on it again a few days later and they had a steel plate over the hole in the bridge. Fort Lauderdale had been in a building frenzy for the last 5 years and they've been throwing these up super quick and I'm not surprised that this happened. Boat loads of money here to grease the politicians and inspectors.

I'm pretty sure that the response was so heavy due to someone saying bridge and collapse and a dispatcher thought the worst. Better to send everything and send them back then not have enough. I guess they'll have to cut out a large section and make a custom patch to get the bridge fixed. Though I wonder if the impact of the crane caused any other damage not visible at first glance.

Well, not totally obvious in the video, it seems to me that despite the repeated comments about the school bus almost being hit, in fact, it stops at the edge of the dark section of the paving, and it wasn't there until after the police first arrived.

Well it wasn't a crane collapse, it was a part of the crane that was awaiting to be installed.

Crane was from Maxim Crane Works, a big rental company based over in the west coast. Signage was on the cab.

It blows me away that they are not required to close streets and sidewalks when they are jacking these cranes. I live in Kelowna and 2 brothers operating the crane fell to their deaths during the operation. Unfortunately another innocent was killed as the crane crashed through the building he was working in.

the contractors often ask the cities to close the streets down, but they often just don't do it because it takes them too long to go from request to action.

Let’s hear some discussion about road closure requirements in Florida construction zones. Are “best practices” for public safety being ignored in Florida when compared with other states e.g. California?

Starting at 6:09 it looks like scrap marks on the concrete just in front of the Tesla first car. So maybe the crane section hit the bridge on one corner just as the car it it and pushed the tower section forward onto the second car.?

@@johngreydanus2033 Yes, those crane sections are extremely heavy, and have sharp corners that will penetrate a roadway, a car, whatever.

We need a "Florida Man" equivalent that we can refer to all these construction blunders as...

Amazing how many angles we can get instantaneously with mobile phones. Really tragic for the worker, could have been much worse though.

They haven't made Pontiacs since 2010. That's the crushed auto. What a shame.

I'm always paranoid driving under these cranes. I try to take a peek up just in case. This will just add to that caution

Pretty sure the crane landed on top of the suv. One of those perspectives show it literally crushing the area between the cabin and the engine bay. Frankly, I'm shocked it didn't crush the driver!

Before you start a jump, you unload and you stand all of the sections that you will be adding directly in front of the base of the crane, that way you don't have to be swinging and luffing all over to get the next section.

There is a type of construction like that. They set columns and build each story on the ground and then jack it into place. So essentially, they are building from the top down. It's not used anymore due to the high failure rate. I'm sorry, but I just can't remember the name off the top of my head.

That one Tesla was only a fraction of a second away being crushed at its front seats.

Yes that is the OSHA rules, which is stupid, because they cited the contractor in other buildings for not having harnesses to secure workers near edge.

Those crane pieces are heavy. That platform joints should be checked everytime they do lift. Those red things that hold the crane as they step it up, is called a "jack". Just like for your car. Sorry for the worker. Terrible way to go.

The car that was hit but not under the dropped piece is a Tesla. Glad there was no severe battery damage.

I'm from the UK and i've worked at sea with American's, and to say that safety came second would be a massive understatement. There really is no need for this to happen, and i'll be they were either rushed to get it done, or inexperienced. Thought go to the family of the worker.
