    I used to clean a bowling alley. After hours of course, sometime around 11 pm. It had a totally different vibe at night time. One of the creepiest places I've ever worked, i was always looking over my shoulder. All those horrid memories are flooding back

    Wow, never have I seen a place this destroyed with the power still on! Great vid, we might have to take some cues from your production quality also haha. What kind of rig/stabilizer do you use to film with?

  • @ThisisDanBell

    @ThisisDanBell

    9 жыл бұрын

    The Proper People Thanks, guys! As far as my rig...I use a movcam cage for sound, lighting and sometimes monitor. I attach a vintage vivitar handle to it and keep it as steady as I can. I usually apply some minimal stabilization in post as long as it doesn’t look wavy. I saw yesterday that you guys got busted as well. Never turn off the camera!! GOLD!!

    This is Dan Bell. Yea I was just terrified that we weren't going to get off scott-free, and I thought if they saw us filming them it would hurt our chances. They came around the corner with guns drawn on us so it was a bit more of a tense situation than in your video. I'll have to look into getting a cage type rig now, looks simple enough to carry around while exploring and the results look great.

  • @ThisisDanBell

    @ThisisDanBell

    9 жыл бұрын

    The Proper People Yeah, my cops had flashlights drawn. Haha. Worst feeling in the world. I hate getting caught. The cages are good because you don’t have to fiddle with all your extras. You just have to set it up so it’s comfortable for you. That’s the main thing. Once you’re comfortable, you can concentrate on getting good shots. I do find it difficult sometimes when I’m riddled with anxiety in these places to concentrate on getting good footage. I have to stop, breathe and start again. This video wasn’t easy. I wanted to get the fuck out of this place so bad but knew the video would be great so I mustered through.

  • @TheProperPeople

    @TheProperPeople

    9 жыл бұрын

    For us we try to focus an equal amount on enjoying exploring the place and on getting footage. Because as soon as getting the footage becomes too much of a chore, making the videos won't be fun anymore. So yea a cage would be great for allowing us to get better footage without it being more work to film.

    This was the former Pike Creek Bowling Center in Wilmington Delaware. The place burnt to the ground in early 2017.

  • @railroadskater2896

    @railroadskater2896

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes!! And the adjacent restaurant area was Charcoal Pit. Pike Creek was built in 88, and closed in 2009. Run to the ground by decidedly poor management. There are plenty of videos about it, the year it opened, on youtube channel Bowlers Gazzette. But by looking at them, the bowling alley looked old even then. Wooden lanes, hand-written score. IT was built with new masking plates, seating and ball returns, but the pinsetters and wooden alley beds were used.

    @@railroadskater2896 Is there any word on what caused the fire?

  • @railroadskater2896

    @railroadskater2896

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@BLAZERWILD No but just the sheer fact the power was left on all that time (mind you, it closed in June 2009), along with the firm who owned it was known to be sordid and controversial (ie Dan's reference to the local bums who "guarded" it) suggests it was either intentional or negligence. Not only was the place deliberately run to the ground, they were met with community opposition when they wanted to demolish it immediately after closure and redevelop it as a grocery store. Of course none of this was brought up in the news coverage over the fire, but who knows if the resultant elimination of the alley will boost any redevelopment plans.

    I have a weird fascination with abandoned structures like this, especially those that are still owned by someone (which they would have to be, because someone is paying to keep that electricity on) who just isn't doing anything with the place. It's kind of sad to go through these places and think about what they used to be and how much meaning they had for people before, but it's really exciting at the same time to see the little nostalgic reminders of the past that have been left behind.

    I guess it's also fun to think about how an entire format came and went. Like, small-town independent bowling alleys aren't home to the same kind of culture that they used to be, they used to be one of America's main middle-class social hubs, and now they're...not. Many of them go under like this one. Same with shopping malls, used to garner a lot of foot traffic, used to rake in a lot of money, but now they...just don't. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but they're usually nothing like what the previous generation grew up with. And in no way am I romanticizing the previous generation, but it would've been interesting to see formats like this during their heyday.

    +Kim Alatore I don't see why people would just hold onto these places while they turned to wreck and ruin... Someone has to own it and others like it, but maybe they're tied up in probate or owned by the city which doesn't have enough money to even demolish them. Who knows.. But some places are abandoned for decades and decades.

    Nothing quite like abandoned places with power still on. It's extremely sad. It's like this building still alive with memories doesn't even notice that everyone is gone or see how hopelessly ruined it is.

    I was trying to figure out why places with the power still seem so depressing and I think you nailed it! To me it's kind of like viewing a past moment in time, but there are no people there because everyone's progressed forward with time. The building, unaware that it's stuck in a time warp, patiently waits, with lights on and fan running, for people that will never come.

    Seriously, Dan, I used to be a master Brunswick mechanic for many years and there is a gold mine in that place. Yes, those are the ancient Brunswick A machines, with the hockey sticks for a triggering system, but the rest of the parts are basically the same. All those new parts in the Brunswick bags are worth money. Where is this place located? We really need to talk. I would love to meet you at these places and explore with you....

    damn shame. bowling alley was most likely owned by an elderly individual/couple and HAD to shut its doors. i used to go to a bowling alley in chatham,ny when i was living up there named chatham lanes. a really nice old lady owned it named mrs.cross and everytime i see an alley nowadays her words from god has to have been between 1998 and 2000 echo in my mind: "i do not know how much longer i can keep this place in business geoff. things arent like they used to be. even 10 years ago (the 80s she was referring to) this place was BOOMING. this is the kind of things folks and the local teens used to do and was thier hangout. now thier hangout is on the internet or in front of the tv." its sad really. the jukebox in that awesome old stainless diner was where " bill and sally" and all of thier friends used to conglomorate. now bill talks to sally over the computer and goes to places like gaming conventions and to the phone store to buy the next video game thats hot. things will never be the same*sighs* i unfortunately was born in the current times with technology but i often wish i could just do the simple things that my parents and grandparents were accustomed to doing. killed a whole night and noone was bored lol.

Have to say, the best bit for me was the facy you captured the back side of the machines. I haven't really seen that done before in these films. The guys/gals that worked behind there were un-sung heros in a way. Often taken for granted when we go bowling, on what it must take to keep all those alleys running smooth and the keeping the games and fun flowing. Nice job on that bit especially. I was amazed at just how many boxes and piles of skittles were still sitting back there. Keep em coming Dan. Best regards.
