FWIW, I have about 500 street miles (mix of Wisconsin backroads and interstates) behind the wheel of a 992 RS and have been surprised by the comfort - it does not "beat you up" in normal mode. frankly, I think it could be daily driven without much complaint. My better half even went out of her way to mention the comfort during an 80-mile highway drive.

"Is this going to match how I like to drive" is the question I had to ask myself when I decided to get my Camaro ZL1 instead of a ZL1 1LE. Ultimately I don't really do track days and the roads where I live suck, so I got a ZL1 and optioned the carbon wing from the 1LE. The spool valve suspension wasn't for me.

Yep. People are always confused when I say my Mustang is overall a nicer car to own than my corvette. Yes I miss the outright performance of my C7 when I'm in the Mustang, but there are dozens of fun B-roads near me that I literally could not drive the corvette down even in full comfort mode because it was just too stiff and hardcore it felt like either me or the car was going to snap from whiplash over those bumps. The Mustang however, is great fun down those roads.

I remember when the GT-R came up in 2009 and set a laptime around 07.29 and shocked everyone, that car did something amazing for a coupe with a trunk thats driveable on the street as a sportscar instead of a track toy and costed less than 100K. IN 2009!

lol...they delivered a review of a sports car in freezing temps. fair play if you don't like the RS, but this was obviously not a good test.

There are no springs at the paddle shifter, they work with strong magnets, thefore the metallic click.

@@aluisious they started high up already, my point was Angeles Crest would take them at least another 1000ft up on that drive, so if it was 40 degrees where they were sitting at the start, they were basically guaranteeing themselves of hitting some freezing weather along that hill climb

You are absolutely correct, for the street Spyder RS will give you much more excitement than GT3RS , I have a go in both and would take Spyder RS for a street driving, I own 992 Touring with ST flywheel and clutch and it’s made for the road , absolute mental , RS is for very few hardcore drivers who would enjoy it on the street but it would be a crime not to take it to the track!!! Thank you , excellent video!!!!

Great video. Wish it was dry but oh well it is still and epic video. Correction regarding the down force, it grows to the square of the speed, so it is not linear, so at half speed, you won’t get 1/2 of the maximum downforce but rather much smaller than that. You will still get some downforce at half the speed but it is significantly lower than half of the maximum downforce (probably closer to quarter of maximum downforce which is still significant number and you could feel it). You are correct (I came to say downforce and drag are a factor of the square of speed, and I am happy to see someone else said it first). According to Porsche, the GT3 RS makes 1895 lbs. of downforce at 177 MPH, and over 900 lbs. at 124 MPH. Doing some quick math says the car would make around 605 lbs. of downforce at 100 MPH. Top speed is 184 MPH, so half of that would be 92 MPH, making around 512 lbs. of downforce, which is just a little over a quarter of the maximum as @mqandil stated above. At more legal speeds, say 65 MPH, it is making 256 lbs. of downforce.

I do think this is the best sounding 992 by a mile. This is the most old school supercar in some ways Porsche is building too if you think about it purely as a road car, inconvenient trunk space, uncomfortable ride, monstrous handling/acceleration. It's single mindedness is definitely making it pure despite the fact it's so high tech but yeah, absolutely. Lots of people shouldn't buy the superlative Porsche just because they can afford it but this is absolutely the SuperPorsche of the moment.

Nice review. It’s not everyday we get to see one of these running on wet roads. I’d get this car because it is a rare example of high level of engineering and build quality. Sure there are faster cars than this but this car’s characteristic is uniquely Porsche and extremely satisfying. In fact, beyond satisfying. There isn’t a lot car enthusiasts with financial capability to own one of these would turn down an allocation.

I recently ran one of these incredible cars in (1500 km’s) over two days on public roads for an owner, felt like it took a week for spinal decompression 😅 such a focused/ twitchy/ firm riding car even below 4K rpm, I don’t think I could live with it long term on public roads (but wouldn’t mind trying…)

For me the GTS is the sweet spot. Enough performance to have fun at a club track day while still being comfortable and livable enough to take over the mountains or up the coast with the wife for a long weekend.

Correction: at half top speed you get 1/4 max downforce because aerodynamic lift is the square of the velocity. Well okay, realistically it's even less than that due to less from the front splitter and rear diffuser due to higher ride heights at lower speeds, but you get the idea - it's exponential

Now, this is a proper review. What a noise this thing makes!

The PDK paddles simply use a micro switch to produce that tactile feedback. $300 paintball markers use the same exact sort of mechanism for trigger actuation.

In the rain I drive this with maximum downforce and it's super confident. I could tell from the wing angle that at least on Zach's drive it was in minimal downforce mode.

Thank you for your honesty and keeping it real! It’s a cool car, but I agree that it might not suit everyone, regardless of affordability. I also feel that some reviewers sometimes emphasize style over practical insights, aiming to appeal to specific market moods of the time.

Back in 2010 I purchased a 997.2 GT3RS and still have it. It is just not fun on the street. So much so that the thrills of taking it to the track did not offset the misery on the street. The sound is magnificent but gets old when stuck in 6th on the highway driving to the track. Getting in and out of buckets is a pain. Shaving seconds off laps does not equate to the decade of ownership sitting in the garage. GR Corolla and Civic Type R are much more enjoyable. You can get a fleet of them vs one RS

The obvious choice if you want a super track focused car that can also work as a weekend getaway car for you and your sweetheart is the GT4RS. Period. The SRS isn’t a great touring car even though it has a tad softer suspension. The SRS is a car for boulevard cruising, top down weekends in the alps and C&C meetings, and it’s crap on track as you can’t exceed 200kph with the roof on and you’ll be banned from all tracks top off, at least here in Europe and it’ll not be pleasant on the autobahn either as no one can sustain speeds above 200kph top down for hours on end. The GT4RS is 90% of the GT3RS on track and just awesome off the tracks. Anyone complaining about its harsh ride clearly hasn’t tried a 964RS or a 992GT3RS.

I think a 911 GTS or Cerrera 4 would be confident inspiring car in the conditions you’re driving in. For street use, the GTS has to be plenty fast for any use case. Either that or get something that’s not adjustable and still raw with a smaller performance envelope like a Lotus Emira.

Just came back from a track day at Spa and it started in the wet. People definitely started off cautiously but these cars didn’t have to hold back as much as most of us.

Problem with the RS over the GT3 is that in the UK where you get the roll cage is that you can't fit helmets in the back through the roll cage so you can't drive you car to a track day.

I mean, watch the Cup Cars lap Sebring. They're frequently having one or more wheels lifting clear of the track and skating along in the bumpier sections. They still run them super stiff. Some of this DNA is absolutely present in the RS cars.

I love the sound of this engine at 9k rpm. I wonder if they'll try and get to 10k some day and be in the five digit rpm bracket with GMA?

Shot in April? Porsche NA should let you guys have another go in the summer or fall. Is there a Z06 video on the way?

Full soft and full stiff both will be bouncy? needs some compression and some rebound to handle well?

Cool drive in the rain. Too bad we can't see the road like we could for years for.. no reason. I guess looking at the car seats will have to suffice..

Really like you guys, the way you present things, and your podcast no question about that. You guys overall do a good job !! However I am a bit perplexed……. I just don’t get a lot of your comments about these types of cars, even down to the Carrera T or Cayman T. I’d highly doubt most these cars are used as a daily, that person is the minority. These cars are used for weekends, B roads and track days, and that’s what they are for. Fast/fun, comfortable, and cheap but you can only have two…… what do you pick ?? So a 992 GT3 RS is a track car, Porsche don’t hide that, a track car you can drive on the road, so of course it’s harsh on the road. I own a 992 GT3 RS and find it fine here in Australia, and a 2024 Macan GTS too. Just think it’s worth the thoughts of reviewing a car as it’s intended not how soft and comfortable it is, because soft and comfortable isn’t “fun” on a windy B road or race track. But please keep up the good work !!

Regarding the adjustable damping...it doesn't matter how expensive the car or how sophisticated the dampers or damping adjustment is, the simple fact is you are only changing one element of the suspension and the spring rates have not changed. The dampers for the most part will have one optimal setting matching those spring rates and the adjustment will only do so much. If you want a more streetable GT3 RS...buy a GT3.

The lack of any storage space is a deal breaker for me too as I use it for weekend trips. Would swap my Turbo for it otherwise. Could manage even more hardcore ride as even it the Turbo its pretty compromised.

Yes you have to look at that wing, lack of luggage space and ask yourself what is your usage that is why I went for the Spyder RS.

Love that you talk about the magnetic paddles. I fitted them to my Touring. And they are incredible.

You can mess with the shocks all you want and it won't make any difference because it's the springs that are stiff. And they have to be, when a car has proper aero that produces downforce and not just negates lift, you need to have the spring rate to support the extra weight being generated from that or else you're gonna be at the bump stops at high speed which is a big no no. This car is not meant to be a grand tourer, it is designed around aero performance which of course is gonna compromise it on the street, it doesn't compare to the 750S, the turbo S would be a more appropriate comparison.

Sure. But the limits are so much higher even a novice driver can get a lot of benefit from this car - the level of confidence and the room for error it gives you make it a much safer car.

Downforce is proportional to velocity squared...........you don't get 50% of the down force at 50% of the velocity. Thats the problem with this RS, you really only get a material benefit around certain styles of high speed circuit. The 991.2 GT3 RS is the better all round car (1) its within a bees dick of the 992 GT3 RS round most tracks (literally the difference in tires will be the time difference) (2) it still retains a functional frunk an essential for weekend track day warriors (3) you genuinely can use it as a daily. The 992 GT3 RS is probably the first RS that doesn't really make sense. If you want a track car, get a genuine track car e.g. GT3 Cup. From a functional perspective the "power train" has been the same with very minor changes and mapping since the 991.2 GT3 , since then they all rev to 9000 RPM, with variations in gearing compensating for tire diameter. Also, the spring rates are huge on the 992 GT3 RS, even with improved wheel rate (slightly - due to front double wishbone) you can only compensate with valve tuning to a small degree - nice to have for sure, but if you have killer spring rates for glass smooth tracks, you can't dial that out. In regard to AP, I think his take is wrong unless he's focussed on a niche within a niche and I say that having done 5 seasons of Cup. The great strength of the RS was you could take it to the track on a weekend with all your track gear safely stowed in the frunk and in nets off the roll cage - now you need a second vehicle - which means, buy a track car instead. The bottom line is, I largely agree with your conclusions its a very small niche product thats lost its raison d'etre, so much so I gave up my allocation, bought a Nero 296 GTB and kept my 991.2 GT3 RS.

Spyder RS: Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of convertibles. Add weight, complexity, lose rigidity, esp makes little sense on a sports car. Also, I live in TX. Days it’s nice enough out to lower top it’s too damn hot.

I hate people who buy these or any exotic and use it as a business transaction for making money with it, but what can ya do I will own one of these hopefully soon and I can’t wait I will always say two wheels are better than four however this RS might change my mind once I have it and can put it on the track

GT3 touring manual! Nothing beats NA engine. The response and sound. RS for ultra limited track star and ST for the general public enjoyment. This is the way…
