STEVE SUTCLIFFE: Is the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS also the greatest? 992 GT3 RS v 993 Carrera RS
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Steve Sutcliffe compares the latest RS-badged Porsche 911 to what he reckons is the greatest - the iconic 993-series 911 Carrera RS of 1995. The brand new 911 GT3 RS is the fastest and most extreme version yet, but how does it compare to its thrilling forebear?
Steve explains why active aero, huge power, multi-adjustable dampers and more are NOT enough to make the latest 911 RS as much fun to drive as the mid-1990s model.

Steve Sutcliffe is one of the very best .............. 10 out of 10 to Steve and the Intercooler team.
I may be showing my age here, but if given the choice, I'd go with the 993 RS every time. It's smaller, raw, air-cooled, and has three pedals. Different strokes... Great video, chaps.

I agree 100% , then I have to consider the looks . There is no way I could drive the modern one , it’s ludicrous, it makes the previous generation Civic Type R seem tasteful! It really is that bad .

@@Carrera-gp9od Well, if you really prefer the understatedness, there's the normal GT3 and even the Touring. I love the fact that the new GT3RS is purpose-built with function in mind and while that function is put to motion, it becomes beautiful.

Well I’m 19 and I’m the same 😂! Lots of love for the older raw cars. Got a little bit of that feeling in my e46 (25 years old now). 😯
Steve Sutcliffe and The Intercooler? Match made in heaven.
993 RS is sooo much more pertinent and desirable in 2024 than a brand new RS
Steve sutcliffe car review.... say no more I'm watching
Having just moved from a 981 Spyder to a 993 because the Spyder was too quick to enjoy on the road (90 mph in 2nd gear, when the roads I enjoy are 50-80 mph) the 993 is a revelation completely engaging, with a close ratio box that means you are continually involved, I’m hooked!

993 RS CS - last of the air cooled master pieces. I love mine and will keep it until I die or can’t get my leg over the roll bar anymore.

Amazing car. Those are what... 100K now? That's a steal. 993 GT2 was sold on Sotherby's for 2.4 million. Those 996's are true car guy's cars and great bargains. The special models 964's and 993's are absolutely ridiculous. They won't even get driven but they're picked up by some rich collectors who just store the cars.
In a perfect world we would have both in the garage! Love the engineering on GT3 RS and love the purity of the Carrera RS.

The same with me, found this channel only because of Steve in the title.
Intercooler grabbing Steve (or having Steve feature in a few videos) is a great move.
I had a 993RS about 25 years ago, proper car🤩
I think unless your commute or local road is something like Angeles Crest Highway or similar, the 992 will be completely overkill. The new cars are so fast that on a road like this it'll barely be breaking a sweat and will be somewhat boring to interact with while the 993 will even at low speed be talking to you and tickling your senses in a way the new cars just do not, especially at low speeds.
Great vid. Fit the welded in M003 clubsport cage into the 993 and the car drives twice fast and twice as good again … i did this and drove it all over Europe for 8 years, sublime.
These reviews of the ‘top end’ RS - old and new, are well and good, but what I’d love to see are reviews of the ‘bottom end’ in the Porsche ranges - e.g. early/original entry-level Boxster/Cayman compared to latest entry-level Boxster/Cayman. And early/original entry-level 911 compared to latest entry-level 911

Well said, you'll have more fun in something like a base 981 Cayman with the 2.7L engine or a 981 GTS with the 3.4L engine. Engaging, light, visceral and go round corners as if on rails.
I’d take the 993 RS for streets and hills, and a Radical for the tracks.
The spiritual successor to the compact simplicity of the 993 Carrera RS is in many ways the 718 GT4 RS.
The new car is perfect for ‘cars and coffee’. The old car is perfect for a Sunday morning drive in the countryside.

The new RS is soooo much more than for Cars & Coffee. It’s an animal in the canyons, it eats up tarmac in a way that makes even the most mediocre driver look like Hans Stuck behind the wheel. It’s an absolute monster on track and would put a lap on a Formula Ford. Then u can drive it home and stop at the drive thru on the way home. Then ofcourse, you have that wing in the back to use as a table to keep the chili from ur Chiliburger from dropping onto your beautiful Alcantara, er Racetex, Seats. Don’t get me wrong, the 993 RS is a fantastic car and probably a lot more visceral at slower speeds. But the new RS is a performance car designed to be exciting at any speed, even at Zero speed from the moment you give it a twist of the wrist to start it up. Though, like u said, that 993RS would be perfect for that Sunday Morning Countryside drive 😊🙌
bury me in my 993 Carrera (with RS engine mounts & thicker anti-roll bar) - I absolutely love it. car far life - would sell my V12 vantage S over the 993 in a heartbeat
993 RS for me. WAY nicer and rawer. Hand built car, air cooled, stunning peak Porsche. The new one... fast and furious... insane track capability... amazing car for sure... but that very large size leaves me cold.
3:33 jump scare in the best possible way
I’m surprised no one has mentioned a comparison between the new 992 ST and the 993 RS, with the ST it’s back to the original ethos of the early RS cars, lightweight, strong engine with a precise gearbox and shifter. In my opinion Porsche nailed it with the ST, the drive is sublime yet the car is modern, between 7-9k the sound is just incredible and you notice the weight reduction in a similar way to a 993 C2 versus the RS.
The power and driving difference between a standard 993/964 Carreras and their RS variants is not big at all. Just about 25 hp, lower suspension and some weight saving measures. I find it quite surprising that Porsche didn't "tune them up" more back in the day. Ironically now those air cooled cars are the most desirable Porsches but back then Porsche was on a brink of a bankrupt. Maybe they didn't have the money to make the RS models more different (give different engines and all that). Just think about it. They sold about 60-68K of each 964 and 993 and half of them were cabrios/targas/tips. And they made 250.000 units of 991 alone. Those now most coveted air cooled cars 964 and 993 didn't sell that well.
Any clown can buy the latest super car. But a true enthusiast combs the back catalogue for the masterpieces.
Yay, more Steve! Just buckling in and getting ready for an epic video (as always 😊 )

I want both equally. They both look so clean and sound so good. If anything, I just don’t like the colors and spec of this particular 992 GT3 RS. If it was in the same yellow I would like it even more.
I just love how the 993 is so much smaller on the road! You have more road to use even isnide the lane but the 992 fills it up almost full
Actually the better comparsion would have been against 993 GT2. But I understand. Those are not easy to find for a review.
Like the 993 im from ‘95 and I really cannot get behind the current GT3 RS. I love that it’s a technical work of art but I’d take that 993 every single day of the week and twice on Sunday. But I’d be even happier in an RS 4.0
993 all the way

720p?!
The modern 911 is an engineering marvel for those that never really learned how to drive without electronic "nannies" to make them feel like a hero.
It’s about the manual it allows an undeniable intimate connection. The standard GT3 in a manual with a mechanical diff and the ability to turn all the driver aids off completely is a drivers dream at any speed.
I have a much loved 993RS Touring. Fab car. It’s everything Steve says.
993 rs is more fluid, nice, more charm. The latest is like an enormous elephant close to 993
The 992 GT3 RS is a fantastic piece of kit and is one of the very few modern supercars I actually like thanks to that brilliant engine and dynamics but I'd prefer the simplicity of the 993 RS to the tech overload of the later RS.

Man, was this shot in 8K? The screen pops!
It feels weird that cars I first started reading about when I first passed my driving test (4th July, 1988 for the record!) are now pretty much classics! I attended supercar-fest a few weeks back with my son, and the supercars and hypercars were incredible, but the ones that I connected to most were a Testarossa and a Countach. Oh, and the Ford GT40. I guess it's an age thing. Don't get me wrong, I admire the latest tranche of sports and supercars, but their crazy speeds and crazy prices lists leave me cold. Give me a blue collar car that gives you thrills at legal speeds (but I'm having an Aston DB12 when my numbers come up lol)
Steve, don't forget that 1104 production number for the 993 RS, includes 213 road registered RS Clubsport variants, which I feel would have made a better comparison to the 992.1 GT3 RS?

@@karespratt5131 I can assure you it is not a factory CS. It is a regular (wonderful) RS fitted with the optional CS spoiler kit. I have owned both variants and the CS has no interior trim or headlining, a full welded in cage, cloth seats, a single mass flywheel and steel syncros in the shorter ratio gearbox. To be clear the car featured is a very nice example of a 993 RS.

Well said Steve. The 992RS is brilliant, no question! But maybe to good. For me, 993RS all day long, mainly for the analog feel.
Analog > Digital Just look at the 993 GT3 RS steering wheel and you have your answer
I'll take the 993
This test feels like a father and son battle on the road. But here's my short take. If you are aiming to shave lap times on the race track, the 992.1 GT3 RS is your ultimate track weapon to maximize its power and potential. But if you just want to enjoy the peaceful, nostalgic drive at the countryside or B-roads, the 993 Carrera RS (or any air-cooled 911s you can think of) is the choice.
I'm hoping it's still processing but it's disappointing to see this limited to KZread's very low bitrate "720p." I'm not sure if this was a time crunch or a pipeline issue or what, but I would bet my left nut that this was shot in 4k. Steve's great and the visuals are beautiful even blurred to hell.
There is not even one second you hadn't have a smile on your face when u are in the 993! 992 well perhaps half is the time 😅
Exactly! PDK novelty wears off and true enthusiast will be longing for a manual.
Nice review Steve. 997 GT3 RS for me if I wanted manual. GT4 RS if I wanted PDK.
Don't forget the 997 GT3 RS.....! Possibly the perfect compromise between these two, and therefore even better than both?
The 993 RS is more smiles per miles all day long.
We love you Steve
Two mighty pieces of 911 history you have here. And each in their own way and period are obviously absolutely fabulous. I get your point when you say Porsche ought to go back to some extent and produce 911ses which are more closely related to the simplicity and directness of the 993 RS. With the 992.1 generation, maybe the Carrera T and on the upper scale the GT3 Touring inhabit and express quite well this soul you are seeking. Seems that it might be more complicated with the 992.2 generation, but who knows ! Porsche may have quite a few nice surprises for us. Where alas the 993 will never be matched again is for its exquisite dimensions which cannot be replicated in a contemporary 911. Still, what on earth am I complaining about ! 😅😎

Came from a Top Gear video, I didn’t finish it. Finished this one
It looks like What Steve Sutclive is looking for is the 992 ST or the Cayman GT4RS, since those are both more lively, simpler and lighter then the 992 GT3RS
As even mid-price SUVs can crack 0-60 in 4 seconds or less, I seriously wonder when "enough" will be enough. The average muppet driver maybe ... shouldn't even be trusted with something that has 1000 bhp and will hit 200! And while we are all suckers for "more", as we watch market competitors like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi launch new cars within 1 or 2 bhp of each other ... and we can get addicted to YT channels where Teslas drag race Ioniq 5s ... have we lost the plot? The human driving a GT3 RS across quiet roads early in the morning .... can't compute/ isn't interested in pure numbers, but only how the machine they're in FEELS. And make them feel. Great piece, Mr Steve. Thank you. I'd have the 993 any day.

I think the acceleration times and top speeds have lost their appeal. I was just watching a Carwow video where a Kia $30K electric car beat Lamborghini in a drag race. LOL. Who gives a toss about those numbers anymore?
Both those cars are very special because of what they are - If you ignore that and go just on the behind the wheel feel, steering, precision, real world pace and feeling of involvement then the manual Cayman R or 987.2 Spyder (similar in weight and power to the 993 RS) offer something that touches on some of the greatness Steve mentions for a price (c£45k) that means those experiences he describes are reachable for many
Only if I had the coin for either of these. Both are versions of the same thing, one is just the evolution with all the tech, aero, safety etc to go with it.
Love the 993😊
One good old-fashioned scalpel compared to a right up to date laser scapel. Both scalpels, both designed to do a job but from different era's
Agree, after a few pulls to 9K with a paddle flick it all becomes a bit boring. Give me old school with shifter for engagement.
For money is no object track day weapon... GT3 RS. Track is the only place to fully enjoy this car or even begin to touch it's limits. It's limits are so high that driving it on the street would be frustrating. For enjoying the overall driving experience, no matter how slow or fast on the street or canyon, the 993 will probably tick all the boxes.
Amen and Amen
