I got a call from an online educational platform regarding xyz course. When I asked them - "how did you get my contact details", their reply was "Facebook". After the call, I immediately logged in and checked my Facebook account. I hadn't even "liked" or followed that page. And my phone number wasn't visible to public. What I realised was, I had "liked" and followed the rival educational platform on Facebook and had even enrolled in some of their programs and had given my details, including phone number and email address to them. Go figure.

One of my student preparing for NEET got calls from random coaching Institute with whom he was never associated in any way for coaching after the NEET result were out as he scored near to cut off of 2020. Data is being sold by official of NTA illegally to coaching Institutes.

I doubt if NTA do this. But I made accounts on few websites that provide papers, textbooks and solutions for NEET. They ask the name of Coaching institutes. I told them my Coaching's name. Please don't tell them this. They actually sell the data.

@@TechWithMK Apple is not secure period. They have flaws but unlike oppo vivo etc (shit level company) which bloated too much using open source software and locking their bootloader. If s phone making cost is 10k + ads+ shipping but they are selling you at 8k how they recover that think about it. Apple’s siri vs google assistant you know who is better but why be socause they doesn’t record everything. They have jail system (bsd philosophy). Even there phone app can’t record only voice memo or apps which require microphone permissions. For end user more pop up Don’t use icloud and location you are mostly safe.

@@TechWithMK I already read from itunes to osx now macos and I didn’t get shocked because they didn’t have backdoor like google does (assistant voice history). It is my device either i jailbreak it or run whatever app i want they can’t stop me. On the other hand google made software (in past) for NSA,DOD so for apple end goal selling apple device (so you recommend to your friends and family). Whereas google sell ads as well as smartphone so their end goal to sell more ads to your phone.

My work revolves around cyber security and data privacy. While there is abundance of people and companies buying and selling of our data, a major problem is also data literacy. I find myself having to explain my mom and dad almost on a daily basis on how our data can be used to spy on us and how our data is being traded legally but unethically and what steps we can take to protect ourselves. I myself recently found out that its not just small, obscure companies dealing in these practices but a lot of larger, older and traditionally well respected websites such the largest matrimonial websites also which have such lax data privacy policies that you would just hang your head in shame and disgust. I have to explain the problems of these activities to my family everyday, but while they do listen to me, it is also hard for them to implement them in their daily lives, especially because the other people they interact with are not going to follow these simple practices to stay safe and due to the ensuing network effect, it is impossible for any Indian resident (I say resident because it includes non-citizens residing in the country as well) to stay safe online. In fact our data is probably safer in the hands of the likes of Google and Facebook rather than anyone else.
