Scam Alert: You're Next!

Ғылым және технология

"I'm not important, why would anyone target me?"
The internet is a war zone filled with people actively trying to scrape all of your data and attack you with scams.
But you're not being singled out: Scammers target everyone. They're indiscriminate, and you will inevitably fall into their wide net.
In this video I explain how perceiving yourself as a low-value target actually makes you an ideal target for both scams and data collection. I also explain how you can better protect yourself.

06:33 You Are Not As Careful As You Should Be

By underestimating our digital importance, we put both our privacy and security at greater risk.

I’ve tried to convince people that they don’t need to be a target to be a target. They just don’t care…they assume they’re going to be compromised so they see no point in taking basic steps. It’s horrifying

I am amazed at the number of people that are unable or unwilling to take even the basic steps to protect themselves. I can’t convince certain people to use a password manager or enable even basic 2FA

Password managers and 2FA are too complicated for a lot of people, they don't care and you're probably being very annoying to them. Unfortunately they'll only learn once they lose enough money or when their nudes is sent to all their family members...

Not just individuals: I spend a lot of time rescuing companies who found all that security was "too much trouble to impliment" and paid the price... and then paid the price again. Laziness has no bottom and humans think that just because they got hit, well, that's them safe from another attack 😕

what happens when your password manager is hacked ? or just gives your government anything they want just because the government asked ? 2FA just makes it tougher but it's not bullet proof

As someone says in "Strange Days": Paranoia is just reality on a finer scale. Never a sentence in a movie has reflected a truth better than this one. Be paranoid, my friend. As usual, great video, with the NBTV seal of quality that we are used to. I am a little more cautious with some companies' updates though... For one exploit they fix, sometimes they create 3 new ones, even more dangerous than the previous (not to mention things that stop working, performance going down....); I always give the community 1 or 2 weeks to test them before jumping into the pool myself 😅

Good information as always. The other thing I let people know is it is often just as easy to email 1 person as it is to email 1000. So why wouldn't they they email a larger group. In addition there are plenty of tools that allow them to mass personalize emails. I have talked to multiple people who got similar emails that were personalized to them showing their passwords that were scrapped from various username/password breaches from various websites. This could easily have been done with something similar to mail merge which would allow them to send the personalized emails using nothing more than a formatted spreadsheet with peoples names in one column and their passwords in anothe. They could then easily scale it to any number of people. As such they target everyone in the breach and as you mentioned they aren't targeting you specifically, they however are targeting everyone in the breach which happens to include you.

There's also value in large swathes of compromised targets for intelligence agencies - while a target may not be easy to attack directly a family member may be susceptible and may prove a useful asset, even a work colleague or associate. The problem with attempting to rank your own target value is that you can't reasonably imagine the potential uses of your systems or information - it's you thinking about it for 5 minutes in a meeting or after watching a video vs a team of experts in the field working on this for months with years of nefarious experience to draw upon for a vastly larger goal.

I have a simple rule that enhance the safety a lot. I never enter a password from a link provided by email or text message. For example if my bank sends me a text saying something's wrong with my account and I need to click here to go clear it up, I'll go access the bank my normal way instead of clicking the link. I mean, yes I do a lot of these other things that are mentioned here, but I tell this rule to everybody to try to convince them to never enter a password from a link.

Question, have you not had any pending updates on your computer or phone for for a while? Is your device more than two years old? If so you may want to check that your device's operating system is still being supported by security updates at all. Just because your phone isn't getting updates doesn't necessarily mean it's updated. This message is brought to you by boomer parents who bought a smartphone eight years ago and don't understand why they should upgrade because it still holds a charge and makes phone calls.

People tend to think being a law-abiding citizen is sufficient. After all, if you aren't breaking any lies, what do you have to hide? However, with the growing presence of AI, there is a new threat they aren't considering. They don't realize how manipulable they are. And with trillions of points of information about people, an AI with sufficient processing power can create an avatar tailored specifically to manipulate you (of course, I'm sure no current or future government or corporate or independent entity would ever do something so immoral, right?).

Memories of HTC phone camera gone dead on an android update (and no way to go back for a couple years until the next update which fixes it), M$ spying on my video player content (Win2k SP3 IIRC), Win 10 hard-crashing in the middle of an out-of-town class after an update, and more. And let's not get started with F360 forced updates that are continuously regressing the application. As I see it, if I've survived 6+ months of the current version of anything w/o getting hacked, I'll take the chance for another few months while the me-first lab rats vet the newest versions for me... thanks y'all 😉
