Scaler 2 | Using Audio Detection to Make a Track

Davide Carbone demonstrates how he uses Scaler 2 to detect the chords from an audio loop and have Scaler 2 suggest chord voicings, variations and suggestions to make a chord progression that forms the basis for an entire track. This video is based on his 'Creative Summary Module 2' from the Scaler 2 Course' and is intended to introduce new users to a simple way to take inspiration from an audio loop and once the key and scale is detected, introduce third party instruments to add vocals, bass and melody.
Davide is using Scaler 2.7 which introduced Multi Voice Output, Live Sync, Parallel Harmony, Autoplay and lots of new content.

Many thanks for this Davide. I really like Scaler as it opens up so many creative possibilities. My own playing ability and musical knowledge does not match up to what I want to produce so Scaler allows me to create expansive and original chord voicings, progressions and variations. Using Scaler has certainly helped my workflow and I can start from taking sample audio from different instruments (bass, vocals, keys, etc) and come up with songs that flow within my selected key. I am a keen follower and look forward to discovering more as I only use a fraction of Scaler's potential.

Thanks Davide. I have only used the detection feature when trying to identify chords I have manually written, but need the explicit chord names for building out the rest of the track. I will try it out on audio files next. Great for remixing tracks by others and also great to use the guitar chords feature to then transcribe the chords back to guitar.

You might want to investigate what Forager VST and ReMIDI 3 can do as far as helping select chords with voice leading. In Forager's case, you can select a note or notes - pitches you would WANT included in the new chord (and even allow "loose matches" - one or more tones allowed to be OUT of scale in the chord), and it will display all the relevant chords in the chosen Key signature. For ReMIDI 3, you select the uppermost, and bottommost pitches (obvious important pitches harmonically in a progression since the uppermost is often the melody note and the bottom note played by the bass), and it will let you cycle through chord options easily to determine the chord you want. Of course, either will let you edit the chord afterwards to voice them as you desire, moving any of the notes around, dropping or duplicating them. There might be something in all of that for a future version that helps users build chord progressions based upon voice leading since Scaler doesn't expose those or let you specify certain note pitches to help narrow down chord choices. Great product already, one of the first to upgrade when you have a new release.

Hi Eric, you can try all kinds of files, Scaler does a good job of extrapolating the harmonic content, that is, the chords. At this stage Scaler is looking to detect chords and overall scale, that may change in the future where it could focus on detecting single notes and melody also

Yes Shane that's correct. Obviously being audio the result depends on how clear the harmonic content of the chords are in your reference tracks, if it's just the chords then that's better than chords, plus percussion, plus other musical content. Trial and error with audio really.

To be honest, I found this VERY disappointing. This video is also used as a "Creative Summary" for part two of the Scaler course by School of Synthesis. Not only is that fact somewhat of a cheat as you would expect material not old and publicly free available. Also the "musical" result here is really poor imho. Not only because of the massive use of ready-made material but also tastewise. And all those fancy Scaler tricks shown here ... do they *really* make a difference to just the chord detection??
