Scale Funk || Why You Can't Trust the Scale

Scale got ya' down? Far too often I hear from those on their transformation journey who are SO incredibly frustrated by the numbers they read on the scale that they want to give up! This is what I call "Scale Mind Funk," and literally, it FUNKS with your mind. If you fall victim to scale mind funk too, know that you are not alone! That dang number on the scale can dictate how we feel about our goals, our willpower, and really our value and worthiness...IF we allow it to. It can COMPLETELY dictate our mindsets, either putting us on a path to feeling amazing, confident, and unstoppable in our pursuits, or it can send us on that downward spiral toward self-loathing, depression, anxiety, and a STRONG desire to quit. Truth. All of this happens because of a dang number on a dang scale.
I’m here to tell you it should NOT be this way! Nope. While the scale is an incredible tool that can help us track metrics toward our goals, we MUST look at is as the tool it is.
Today, I’m sharing "why" and "how" the scale lies, the correct way to weigh-in (yes, there’s a secret formula to this!), as well as all my tips and tricks to making sure the scale isn’t putting you in a transformation funk!

Another tip is to weigh yourself on the SAME SCALE THREE TIMES. Zeroing it first, of course. Sometimes, you might get a different reading. If you do, simply zero the scale again, step on, and if it's still way off, take the median of all the readings. Great tips!

+ you can test the accuracy of your scale with weights (although i’m not sure if there are minor discrepancies between brands for weights, and i wouldn’t doubt it). or if you have an object and you know for a fact is weighs x, you could use that. and it’s important to know where to put your weight - shifting pressure from your heels to the balls of your feet can give a different reading

I have not been able to budge lower than 200 lately, so I started not looking at the scale as often. My body has hit a plateau. I’m changing it up, hitting the gym, weights, machines, different foods...etc. I was 291 now I’m 200. Lost 91 pounds in 1 yr and not stopping!

Reshme Farah it’s not a bad thing, until you get obsessed with weighing yourself, then it can actually mess with your brain and mental health and you can become addicted. It makes you think you are heavier than you are or that you are bigger than you are.

This is so so important! I was just talking about this with a co-worker recently. This is exactly what I was telling her from what I learned during my transformation. You don't need to weigh yourself everyday! Once a week, same time and measure yourself also. I found the scale would be only half a pound, to no different or even up but I'd lost 1-2 inches which showed I was making progress. The NSV are the most important part of any journey!

Heidi, do a video on rebounding. Rebounding is the one exercise I can stick to, because I'm a stay at home mom, home-school and babysit Littles, it is hard to get out the door. I generally do a very active health bounce for about 50 min. 5 days a week. Muscles popping out in my arms, abs and legs with this alone! I am curious about how many calories that would burn. My body is historically sluggish. I gain slowly, but rarely lose. I am now up 100 lbs overweight. Would love advice. I began rebounding in Feb. and dropped some pounds but they keep dancing back and forth. Trying to get the right combo for my body. (btw, I am hypo-thyroid). Thanks for the above video. Very well said.

When I needed to lose weight I bought a bathroom scale and during the first eight days my readings were confusing, too many ups and downs of 2 to 3 kilos. Then I realized that the scale reads differently when the ambient temperature changes abruptly between the drawer in which I place my scale and the floor. So I learned to rest the scale a minute or two before stepping on it. In addition, I take three or four consecutive readings and take the average. Just to be safe. By the way. I weigh myself without clothes on.

You look so amazing....I am watching this at 2am, following a day of self sabotage. I am 53 years old and over 100lbs overweight and signed up for another fitness challenge that I so want to win but i am fighting against a lifetime and bad habits and living on auto pilot. I dont know if you will actually see this and yet I needed to reach out. How can I lose a whole person to become someone I don't know?

I’m scared of my scale....such a mental trigger for me. I use my clothing and how I look in them to push me along my journey. Once a week would be enough for me!

Valerie G S I struggled with the scale for many years! I switched to clothing! I have certain clothes that I call my “weight gauging clothes”. Especially if you are into working out, this is what works! Muscle weighs 3 X more than fat, hence the mental trigger. Stay strong! 🦾🦾🦾

I wish you would have put the scale in the same place and measured to see the difference. Floor level plays a HUGE, and as a viewer I can’t tell how much was contributed to one

Also common for a lot of women to retainin more water a few days to a week before the period starts do to pms. Magnesium supplements helped me a bit with that but not 100% so I don't see a point in checking my weight during that time except if I wanted to know just how much extra water I retained that month, but it's not fun seeing the number go up even knowing the reason for the gain

Girl I am the SAME weight as you! I was 133 (down from 160). I stopped weighing myself every day because it was so bad, stepped on the scale for the first time in weeks and I’m 139. My smaller sized clothes all still fit the same, but I can’t tell if I’m “getting chubby” again or if I’m building muscle.

I just had a Nurse Practitioner tell me to eat less, because I weigh 166 lbs (I also have more muscle than I've ever had, even when I studied dance in college, but do they consider this?) I love this. I joined NOOM, weighing myself every, single day, hated it; and I now know that I have circulation issues and I retain water, I weigh 20 plus lbs more than I have my whole life, never really varied for over 35 years, never counted calories, just focused on eating more good carbs than bad, felt I was in a place to help others be healthy like ME; then third surgery, health issues, 25 lbs up in a year; told I am overweight by the doctor; water weight is real... wearing compression socks my calves are about half the size. But.. yeah, I always have been eating around 1300 calories, and that was NOOM's super fast bunny "lose weight fast" calorie recommendation... I was shocked being that low calorie was my "normal" day, I hardly changed a THING- ugh.. Praying I figure out if I should be eating so much salt, see a doctor people... I have over-eaten here and there, I have pizza like once every THREE months and gorge on it, yes, but NOT even every month- but I think my body is really retaining water because of my health issues... that apparently need more salt to not feel faint? Ugh.

I hardly ever get on the scale, but I noticed that I lost about 4.5# in one week last week. I'm not sure what I did that gave me the weight difference. Probably because of the change in seasons (shrugs)? I don't really recall doing anything different besides for NOT exercising for a stretch of about 2 weeks. Could it be from muscle loss?
