How To Lose Weight and Gain Muscle-AT THE SAME TIME

Ever wondered HOW you can burn fat while simultaneously building muscle? I’m diving deep into this topic and answering this most commonly asked question by breaking down EXACTLY what it takes to create success with these 3 very different goals:
1. Build Muscle
2. Burn Fat
3. DO THESE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME, ie. Body Recomposition.

Invest in a body fat monitor. Mine displays weight, body fat percentage, bone mass, water percentage, muscle weight. You should be able to get one on Amazon for less than £50/$45. Mine is a Tanita. Otherwise go by your measurements and how clothes fit. Quality sleep and good nutrition are key factors also.

Without my Tanita body composition monitor i would have only known I'd lost 1.2 pounds in weight and would have been SO disappointed as have been eating really healthy and training regularly. No need to buy an expensive one, check Amazon 🤗

I stopped looking at the scale and started basing my results on how my clothes fits because the scale is just something that not only discourages me but many others. So I basically came to the conclusion to be kind and gentle to my body and not compare my physique to other's so I can start to embrace the shape that I am. At the end of the day no matter what people will ALWAYS critique something and I'm saying that because I've been body shame even when I've been in the best shape of my life "Oh my God you look anorexic", "You look like a little boy with muscles", " Females aren't supposed to look muscular they are supposed to look lady like".... Those types of comments really hurt my feelings but they also made me realize that the journey is Never about anyone it's supposed to be about you embracing how God made you and treating your body as a sanctuary. So Lady's let's be kind to one another and empower each other instead of tearing each other down. #Peace&Love #EmbraceWhatYouHave #SelfLove #BeKind&GentleToYourBody #TreatYourBodyAsASanctuary

Dulce Padilla Thanks for posting this, I Don’t weigh myself. I go by how my clothes fit (my mom taught me that years ago, and it works!). Obviously I’m not talking about “stretch” clothing. The only time I ever weigh myself, is if I’m going to calculate my body fat with the calipers. Too many people get hung up on a number on the scale! Focus on your goals & how you feel. Journaling also keeps me on track.

There is certainly still need of exercises even only a few times a week and also the meals to eat must be best. It showed awesome results for me. Wow. So glad I found you. I am 67, 5’4”, small boned with osteoporosis, and have been lifting for a year and a half. I have a good coach, near my age and a high school football coach with a shredded body. He found me walking on the school track and begged me to come to his lifting classes. I have come from 119 pounds, sedentary life as a dressmaker and beadwork designer, thick middle, waist 29” to very active, much stronger, and a 25” waist at 104. I have built substantial muscle, and stabilized my bone loss. But eating is the hardest thing!!! I also have reflux disease, so must eat the right stuff with great care. I used to eat about 1200 cal a day and now I eat about 2200, aiming for about 20% protein, 30% fat, and 50% carb. I’ve tracked my food for over a year using an app, My Fitness Pal, and I see you have app recommendations which I will check out. I suspect I need a greater percentage of protein, but you never mention a daily split. I still have padding on my butt and belly, and have all the time left in my life to keep gaining muscle and losing fat. So. What is your daily recommended macro intake for a situation like mine? I try to eat at Maintenance, or just slightly above, but think I need to adjust my percentages. I love your videos! Thank you!

  • @anastasiya8314

    @anastasiya8314

The general rule for building muscle is eating a gram of protein per pound of body weight. Sometimes it can be hard to do so bodybuilders and weightlifters drink whey protein to get their proteins in. I would also decrease carbohydrates because 50 percent is a lot. Carbohydrates do help with muscle ATP when you’re lifting but the type of carbohydrates you eat and amount are important for how much fat your body will put on. When you eat carbs your body produces greater amounts of insulin which is a hormone that signals your body to retain fat. When you eat low glycemic carbs (carbs that don’t spike insulin production as much) they digest slower in your body and don’t create as much of an increase in insulin and steady increase of blood sugar levels. This means that it’s better for your body and can lead to fat loss if you 1. Replace high glycemic carbs with low glycemic and 2: reduce amount of carbs based on your goal macronutrient levels. This will allow you to lose the extra fluff covering your muscle mass you already built while maintaining and still being able to steadily build the muscle mass further.

But I' m always amazed at the amount of calories a workout will burn. Did a shoulder set on Monday during which I actually burned 450 calories in 50 minutes... My shoulders look awesome, same for my back, biceps and legs, and my lifesaver that's around my middle is slowly disappearing 😀 It's slow going, but it' s going and I enjoy this new lifestyle. Thank you so so much for creating this program, Heidi ( even if adding metcons and plyometrics in the mix was kinda mean 😜). Got the lifetime membership - absolutely worth it. Love you guys 😘

Only thing I will say is I love her. First person I saw so far to actually mention and separate two types of training. By watching YT fitness people, my eyebrows went up many times but I am finally happy to see at least one of them saying something what makes sense. Its very important that she separated it in a way that people with zero knowledge in human physiology can actually understand it. Calories are important as well as type of training. As she said gaining muscles requires higher calorie intake and resistance type of training that is weight lifting. Losing weight or better to put it burning fat requires lower calorie intake and endurance type of exercise that is cardio, cycling, swimming, running... So doing both is doable even though these are completely different type of training. Order of exercise and the frequency is also important. You dont want to overload and exhaust yourself by doing exercises 6 days a week, especially not if one do both weight lifting and cardio. Body requires a rest as well. As she said this is a long run and one must be patient.

In this case the advise was when trying to build muscle while losing body fat I.e. body recom it is best to select “Maintenance” & you did a good job at explaining why but feel is counterintuitive ? Love this video! have to check because you've probably already done it. But I'd love to see a video on just losing fat. I've built quite a bit of muscle, need to get the fat layer off.

Thanks Heidi! How tall are you and how much do you weigh to be at a calorie surplus of 2,200-2,700 calories per day?

Thank you for the video. You said something interesting. When in a higher calorie surplus to bulk up, a layer of fat will come too . However, is that "fat" the one that gives you cellulitis? I am very curious thanks

Oh my goodness, I have been SEARCHING for a real answer to this question!! How to lose weight + gain muscle simultaneously. I started my fitness journey in the gym about 3 months ago, have been consistent and using progressive overload and keeping track of my progress and such. However, I’ve been at such a loss when it comes to food. I was 167 and I’m now only down to 163 which is obviously not much but I’ve been checking the scale periodically throughout the time I’ve been going to the gym. I’ve been aware that the scale numbers aren’t everything especially when trying to build muscle at the same time. However, I’ve gotten so caught up in trying to lose weight and build muscle that I’ve been all over the place eating in a calorie deficit which has been easy but also worrying if I’m not eating enough to build muscle and tone up, not sure if I should trust the macro calculators, how much protein I should get , if I should lower my fats or carbs because I’ve been trying to lose weight while also knowing that you need carbs to build muscle. Anyway, I’ve looked for a solid answer on this question and you’re the first person who has given and answer that is pretty straightforward unlike all these other people who probably have valuable info. However, their answers have been accustomed to them and not a more straightforward answer that isn’t custom to one person but can be applied to all who have that type of goal. Hopefully that made sense, I will now to what you’re suggesting and stop stressing about how many calories I’m eating, eating at maintenance, trusting the process and staying consistent! Thank you so much :)

This was so helpful! My question is how would I adjust this for being post-menopausal? I LOVE lifting heavy and mixing in HIIT for cardio. Usually resting one day per week. Exercise is not my problem, but I focus far too much on food without making good decisions. Main problem...not eating enough. Let me know if any of your message would be revised for a menopausal active women. THANK YOU!!

I would like to know how the hormones are affected as well... for the ladies who have had actual babies... I think they may not mind... cos I read that, your ovaries do shrink, if you eat less than what your body needs.. I like to know if this is true. Cos the period stops.... Now... Is this a good thing ?.... Although, you would be at your most healthiest... However... I do want to know if.... Yes, I like to know from other body building women, if their periods continued or if you had to take contraceptives to ensure it stays.

Amazing video. Very informative. I was wondering why I wasn't losing weight despite my clothes being baggy due to consistent exercise, but it all makes sense now. Definitely will do some measurements and what now instead of relying on the scale. What do you think of smart scales that show muscle mass, bmi, etc?

I mainly want to lose fat and tone up my body and have a butt. My weight is good. I’m 5’5 and 120lbs. I just want less fat and to improve my shape. Back when I did cross country I lost a lot of fat. I did power training everyday in addition to that and we targeted different muscle groups each day aside from the daily pull ups and weighted squats

Hi Heidi I just found your channel. I am turning 70 in November, any suggestions for building muscle (arthertic hands) and getting my body lifted a bit. I do walk every day and play a little pickleball, but I need to work the muscles. I don't feel I need to lose any weight. Thank you

I’m doing keto and training with resistance bands targeting muscle groups with each exercise. I used to think training with keto wouldn’t work as well because you need glucose to work the muscles but actually I read some studies that showed endurance and strength athletes are able to workout for longer periods of time without fatigue when doing keto as long as you are eating enough protein and fats to burn into energy. So far I do see a slight difference in body composition especially how much fat I have. I look like I do yoga in my physique but I would like to build more muscle as well. I think I will switch to low glycemic carbs when I lose my goal amount of fat to perhaps maintain fat levels and build even more

I just had gastric sleeve surgery 5 weeks ago so I am on a severe calorie reduction. It is still difficult for me to get enough protein and water. But I am released to full activity at 6 weeks. My ultimate goal is to get fit with visible muscle. This helped me understand I need to wait until I can get more calories before lifting for gains. However, do you recommend I start lifting before to establish a good base or just stick to cardio, or even maybe body weight strengthening only?
