Scabby, itchy, baldy cats most likely have Miliary Dermatitis

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Cat who are itchy and scabby will groom themselves so much that their coat goes is very thin and baldy. Their skin will have tiny pin-point scabs and their lives are blighted by itching all over that just never stops. These cats suffer from a condition called Miliary Dermatitis which is pretty easy to treat and will change their lives forever

    My cat is 15 and has had severe allergies since he turned 5. He used to get a depo injection ever 4-5 weeks but the vet scared me with the possible diabetes side effect so I stopped taking him. I limit his diet to very high quality wet food and of course let him get a few munches of his limited ingredient turkey kibble (because he asks for it daily). Wish I could get him off kibble for good, because the more he eats it the more he itches and rips out his fur. I’ve had him allergy tested numerous times and he is allergic to everything in cat food including the most popular proteins. I tried making him food at home and it made him itchy. I wash his blankets and beds and my floors with non toxic products. I give him the best filtered water… this allergy nightmare has had me troubleshooting a solution for 10 years and I still have had no luck. I don’t mean any disrespect because I thought your video was very informative and helpful to those starting out on this tough journey. However, what is the root cause of an overactive immune system? If cats are like us it appears that we need to dig deeper and look at the gut and treat the root cause. It’s maddening to go to the vet constantly to get a prescription filled or go for shots. I give up. 😢

    Hi Talin Thanks for getting in touch - yes I agree agree, modern medicine is still rubbish at treating any sort of allergy or immune system problem. I am very allergic myself and spent some time in a coma in 2019 with autoimmune encephalitis. We have medications that can address the symptoms but I agree that we need to find the root cause and correct this . I suspect the root cause and the "cure " for allergies will come in my lifetime. It is likely to take the form of stem cell gene splicing therapy to correct the faulty DNA coding in allergic individuals. Until then all we can do is what you have been doing - focus on gut heart , find a best suited diet and treat with steroids and cyclosporin as required. Regarding diet - my choice for gut health and skin allergies is RCW hypoallergenic or hills z/d diet. Hope this helps Best wishes Nico

    @@nawamaI am not a vet, but it sounds like your cat is dealing with a “hot spot” and yes, this is directly related to their reaction to food. I feed my cat any label that says “limited ingredient” or single protein. Brands: Instinct The raw brand limited ingredient turkey pate, RAWZ turkey and turkey liver pate, and identity bison or quail. I had to try so many brands and so many proteins but these are what he’s eating now. Please check which protein and ingredients are listed that you need to avoid! If you go to a specialty pet food store they might carry better quality brands. Good luck!

    Our kitty had his first major dermatitis flair up last year and we finally got it under control with Prednisolone. Kitty was fine for a few months and is now having a breakout. Our vet talked us into ordering Atopica but the price tag isn’t manageable for us. I’m going to reach out to another vet and see if they would be willing to treat kitty’s flair ups with steroids as our current vet is opposed to that form of treatment. Thank you for the great advice and insight!

    Hi Suzy Thanks for getting in touch. Yes , the cost of Atopica is pretty steep and unsustainable for Ost of use. I use steroids routinely and frequently and without significant problems. The most common problem is that cats may get fatin which case we give them a break from treatment. Using steroids according to the rules of lowest effective dose and shortest effective courses is associated with allow risk of significant problems and restores happiness and quality of life to cats suffering from military dermatitis. Hope this helps Nico

    Hi Marti The most appropriate flea control for a pet depends on their lifestyle (eg indoor or out door cat) and where you live in the world (as parasites vary) and your individual pet's tolerances for various drugs ( medication active ingredients and excipients). In broad strokes, it is hard to go wrong with Nexgard Spectra for dogs and Advocate for cats so consider these in the context of your pet's age , size, weight, lifestyle and geographic location and drug tolerances. I switched to an all raw diet (chicken thigh meat and bone blend, plus various vitamins and powders; B complex, biotin, taurine, Lysine, etc) which I tried for four months. THEY LOVED IT but it too was a major time and cost commitment on my end. I did get a nice Ninja blender out of the effort, then switched to a new brand (for me) of Skin & Stomach cat food from Authority (distributed via Petsmart in Canada). I've been giving them a daily mix of the wet and dry version of the Skin & Stomach variety and she's maintained a good skin and coat condition now for six months. My cat has this. He was at the vet today and that was the diagnosis. Vet put the cat on prednisone(crush the tablets and give him a pinch with his food each day) plus he gave him a steroid injection(I think). The cat has it mostly on his belly and front legs(one in particular). doesnt have it on his face or back so much. You can see how its affected his mood. Is usually super friendly but lately seems depressed. He is a rescued stray and mostly an outside cat(till winter). Not sure what his trigger is. Ive always fed him the same food and he hasnt always had this(altho did have it once before). I gave him flea treatment in case thats it. Ill try switch his food too. I also have chronic skin allergies so I know how irritating and depressing it can be. He has my deepest sympathies. Maybe he got it off me !!! (: .. Ill do my best to keep my cat from getting inflamed with this again. Anyway gr8 explanation. Very clear. Now I know exactly what it is and how to tackle it. Tks

Years ago a roommate had a cat that didn't mind fleas but my cat would become bald. but now she is just getting the bumps (no scabs) so i was thinking it is food. I've switched to just feeding fish and chicken and no grains but it seems it got worse. so maybe it's the chicken. but for now i just want to get her some steroids. Problem is, i've had difficulty with vets. they seem to want to waste time (and my money) and do all these tests and also they want the cats history. This cat is 18 (and they don't believe me). Food allergies are really rare and very often affect just the face i.e. just the face becomes inflamed and scabby so if the is the case then food allergy may be the diagnosis but if the whole body is affected then it is less likely. If you wanted to trial different foods then use foods containing protein she has not eaten before like venison, rabbit etc and avoid chicken, beef, mutton, and lamb. The easiest option for changing the food is to just use HIlls Z/D diet or Royal Canin Anallergenic diet but I agree with you , the most important thing ( especially for someone her age) is to use prenisolone and balance giving her the lowest dose possible to achieve the best result. As an added benefit, the prednisolone will also help for old age arthritis which she will have, at least to some extent, at her age. Hope this helps. Keep safe and well in these troubled times Nico

    This was the best video I have seen to explain cats with allergies/skin conditions Thank you so much! One question I have please if you could help me? My cat has several of the allergy signs you stated, the red rash on the head just below ear where the fur is less, scabby chin, biting his legs etc and spitting out fur, he has a vet appointment in one weeks time, until then I wonder if it is safe to give him a flea treatment as you said "just in case" to cover that part as we are unsure whats causing this, or could the flea treatment actually make his skin worse? The reason I am reluctant is because there is no sign of fleas at all, and i dont want to then cause more problems or do you think its the best thing to do so that I can say to the vets that I have tried that angle etc? Thank you in advance for any help :)

    Hi Alex Thanks for getting in touch. Yes , I think it is always prudent to administer a good flea product "just in case" and doing so will help your vet in the decision making process. If you have other pets at home please check them thoroughly for fleas because sometimes it is the fleas from the other pets that could be the trigger ad your vet will ask you this at you appointment Hope this helps Best wishes Nico

There really are no hard and fast rules about how long you can use the steroids - it depends on the dosage rate and the individual cat's response to the medication. The plan is always to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest period of time which could be days, weeks or months. Hi and thanks for getting in touch. It sounds very much like an allergy. There are some types of cat mange that can cause similar lesions but these are unlikely with an indoors cat. • @nicothevet7851

    @nicothevet7851

    Hi Christie I am sorry to hear how frustrated you and your cat are. I think the confusion stems from terminology - many vets call the condition " flea allergy" when in fact we should call it "skin allergy or miliary dermatitis". By naming it correctly it becomes clear that, although fleas may be contributing to the problem and so it's imperative we get rid of them, the problem is that the cat is likely allergic to several triggers and most of them are things in the air ad environment that we cannot get rid of so we have to treat the allergy with cortisone or ciclosporin. Perhaps watch the video to see a longer explanation. Hope this helps Best wishes Nico

    Thank you for the very informative video! I think two of my cats have this condition. The mama cat and one of her offspring get bumps that blister in the summer which leak, and in some places loose their hair. It clears up in the fall, winter and spring with their hair growing mostly back. I’ve taken them to a couple of vets which have given a steroid injection which helped heal the sores but then the vet doesn’t want to continue giving a steroid injection without knowing what it is or the cause. The tests are very expensive and they have said we may never know what causes this issue. We do not want to spend unnecessary money and more important don’t want to subject our cats to surgical procedures if it’s not necessary. Is it possible to send you photos of our cats?

My 3 year old cat has been itching kicking all over for three months with few small scabs, loss of fur on legs tail belly only. I tried many alternative treatments to no avail. Took to a cat specialist vet , she said all signs point to flea allergies. She was certain! I did suggest environmental more so she disagreed!! I suggest steroid she disagreed! He is strictly indoors ( his brother too) did get fleas when kittens from my apartment hallway ( a dog brought in) So, I did administer one dose both cats revolution plus ( prescription) even though no fleas. My cat is still kicking and scratching four days later after applying … how long would it take to stop itching if it is flea allergy and will the revolution plus help with that ? I still feel he needs steroids! Can I get an over counter steroid for him and how long to wait after giving the revolution plus? Thank you!! The organization kept the information from me that the cat I adopted has this miliary skin condition, though they knew had taken the cat to the vet and the cat had been given the depo and antibiotic shots. Now, listening to this. I find this is a chronic, recurring condition and the cat will need veterinarian intervention every few months. I am very upset and concerned about this news. Hi Missa I am sorry you are having rough time at the moment. I think it is unlikely that the mould issues in your house are the cause of the cats' symptoms. The itchy scabby skin is likely secondary to external environmental factors carried into the house in the air and/or fleas( check the cats closely to be sure there are no fleas) and the recurrent eye problems may be due to a variety of problems. Her fur stopped falling out after I gave her a bath, bc what else can I do over the weekend? Gave her flea and tick treatment. My other cat is completely fine! Hi Tracey I cannot comment on specific cases but in my experience there is no significant risk of long term damage when using cortisone/steroids according to the rules for using these drugs ie use the shortest courses possible and lowest effective dose to meet the needs of the patient. If an individual must be on very long courses then taper the dose to the minimum effective dose , ideally tapering down to alternate day ( every other day) low dose dosing. Once a cat or dog or human being has been of cortisone some of their liver enzymes( liver blood tests) may be increased by the cortisone - this is almost never significant but knowing that these levels where normal before starting the treatment my make us more confident ascribing the blood level increases to the cortisone. A similar thing happens to some people( like me) on long term statins for high cholesterol and as long as the elevations are within the predictable range , your doctor will ignore them Hope this helps Nico

    Hi and thanks for getting in touch. If there are scabs on the skin then it is unlikely that the hair is just falling out i.e. it is more likely that the cat is licking or rubbing and that is why the hair is missing. Some very overweight cats cannot reach to lick the small of their backs but , if there are scabs, I would still think this is an allergy. I would suggest watch the video then go and chat with your vet about treatment options

    Hi. My indoor cat started getting little scabs all along it's tail first of all. He started scooting on the sofa a little bit. He licks his bottom alot and it looks quite red. Now he has scabs on the inside of his rear legs and bigger scabs on his sides. He has licked the fur off his tail and around his bottom and back of hind legs. My cat was eating a plastic plant before I removed it. I was thinking he could have had an allergic reaction to it if it's still inside his body. Would you be able to advise me on this please?

  • @nicothevet7851

    @nicothevet7851

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Samarra. Thanks for getting in touch. I think it is very unlikely that he is having an allergic reaction to eating the plastic plant. It is much more likely that is is an environmental allergy i.e. he is reacting to something or multiple things in the air, in the environment and perhaps to any fleas he might have. Watch the 'Itchy scabby cats' video which explains this in more detail. He will need treatment for this , most likely prednisolone or cyclosporin - you vet will advise you which one would be better for your situation. Keep safe Nico

    Hi Travis Thanks for getting in touch - it's possible that the vaccine triggered the allergy but more likely something else triggered the allergy. ask the vet to treat the allergy and if it goes away and only recurs when she has her next vaccine then that would suggest the vaccine as the culprit but if it goes away and comes back at some point in the future unrelated to recent vaccination then it is likely fleas and/or environmental allergens that trigger the allergy Hope this helps Best wishes Nico

    My 3 year old cat started showing sings of balding from overgrowing on her belly in the fall and has become worse since chewing at her paws, legs and stomach. I have been to multiple vets and tried steroid shot, food elimination- sticking to one source of protein, indoor cat only and I have a air purifier running everyday. She has been prescribed atopica daily which was helping immensely in the beginning but doesn't seem to be working now. I have exhausted all options I don't know what else to do as she is extremely healthy in every other aspect!!

    Hi Treena Thanks for getting in touch. It does sound like she has allergies if the Atopica worked. Most Allergy treatments must be given every day or every other day likely forever. If the Atopica is being used every day at the correct dose it may be time to consider combining it with daily steroids for a while or in extreme cases I would consider Ovarid. Short course or single doses of allergy medications often fail so long term treatments are essential. Have another chat with your vet or ask then to refer you to a dermatologist. Hope this helps - please let me know when you have got it under control Best wishes Nico

    Hi Christal Thanks for getting I touch. Yes, I am not a fan of just using a cone because this stops him damaging his skin but he is still living with the itch ad irritation. Discuss using prednisolone, depomendrone and/or cyclosporin with your vets - the dose and frequency of use is tailored to each individual. Also think about changing food to RCW feline anallergenic diet of hills z/d diet - trialling these foods is much much less important that giving the medication but if you can I would suggest doing both. Thanks...But I can't find a definitive answer anywhere. My cat has been inside from birth. No fleas or anything like that. She's been battling this from a kitten...her mum did too...she is 6. It comes and goes and I swear it's from stress. She eats grain free food and a bit of tuna for any meds i might try. Benadryl did work some but I can't get her to take it anymore...believe me I tried. Vistiral works some as well. I put witch hazel on the scabs and then coconut oil...you can put a bit tea tree oil in the coconut oil as well. When she gets very itchy, she has to wear the cone for a day or 2. She eats and drinks normally...also uses the potty normal. And I did do the flea stuff for several months just in case...

She fit s the description of military dermatitis exactly, and suffering from allergic eczema myself, I really empathise with her and want to get this treated so that she has relief. My little Kira is FIV+. I was wondering if prednisone is contraindicated in FIV cats. I am so afraid of suppressing her immune system. But at the same time- she is so uncomfortable, and the sores are a potential bacterial infection risk. Could you advise?

    Hi Meliora Thanks for getting in touch. Yes , technically medications like prednisolone and cyclosporin should be avoided in FIV cats but I have used them on occasion when the level of itching has been so severe that the welfare issue has outweighed the potential risks of these drugs. An alternative for her may be a medication called "Ovarid" - it too may have significant side effects but most cats do very well on Ovarid for this problem. Hi Justerre Thanks for getting inn touch . Yes , if fleas are the cause of the allergy then getting rid of the fleas will resolve the allergy but for most cats this is not the case and in these individuals the allergy is triggered by environmental factors that we have little control over so are left with having to treat with medications like steroids and cyclosporin and dietary trials. Dietary manipulation sometimes give some improvement but very rarely means that no medications are required. I feel your pain , I would prefer to not use medications and I think to "cure" allergic individuals will come one day in the form of stem cell gene splicing therapy to correct fault DNA sequence causing allergies but that technology is somewhere in the future. I am a severe allergy sufferer myself so also wish modern medicine would come up with better treatment and management protocols. Best wishes Nico
