SC Flounder Gigging

Flounder Gigging is awesome! If you have never been I highly suggest that you find a way to get out there and enjoy this sport.
In this video, my son and I are enjoying what is left of the summer vacation and trying to bring home a couple of flatties. The night started off a little windy but quickly died down to a gentle breeze. We had more time driving to and from than we did actually gigging. But it wasn't bad for an hour and a half of gigging.

Can't beat those outrigger outdoors flounder gigs. The swamp eye lights are pretty amazing too. Nice job sticking some good doormats!

I do like my outrigger outdoors gigs. Never had any problems keeping fish on them. My buddy bought the swamp eye lights and I wasn't too impressed for the money. I made my own and they do a pretty good job.

@@johnjennings487 the swamp eyes are pretty dang bright. the only time I've seen them dim is usually due to a low charge battery. we run ours on 2 deep cycles and they do real well, friend of mine runs on alternator and they are even brighter on alternator because that's basically the equivalent of a fully charged battery all the time. But if you were able to make your own that's great, we used to make our own but had too many problems with them holding up for the long haul. never had a problem like that with swamp eyes. keep stickin - doing good.

After thinking about it for a while it came to me. He didn't get any flounder that night. He probably forgot to charge his batteries and blamed it on dim lights! I will have to reconsider those swamp eyes when/if mine all die. Thanks for reminding me.

I'm guessing you have the gopro mounted to a fixed spot on the boat? Looks much better stationary like that than if it was on your head or the gig. Great footage. It's interesting that on an outgoing tide they were still way up in that shallow water. I would think they would be by ledges, deeper water, or creek mouths waiting to ambush bait coming out of the shallows.

I had my camera mounted to one of the pvc poles that my lights are on. I get dizzy sometimes watching the camera view from a head mount. Just too much moving around to me. Depending on what part of the tide falling i have caught them almost with their backs out of the water...guess they do sleep!

I don't really have a spot to name because it takes a while to learn a body of water. You can find flounder all over from Hilton Head and anywhere along the ICW. BUT in the last 2 years i have been up and down the coast just looking for those sandy flats and that is what we have been trying.

14' jon boat. Homemade lights. I got started watching Outdoor Hydroponics channel. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGum0ZVwj5O4k6g.htmlsi=VA_TbwVbryJC3WTZ This video got my interest going. I made that exact setup and still have it but them I got on a 12v led system. Order some chips and epoxy from amazon and that's what I use. Love it. My buddy has some Outrigger Outdoor lights and they are ok but he built his own too. Right now I run 400 watts worth on the front of the boat and it lights up the water pretty good. 2 batteries with 200 watts hooked up on each. Lasts all night. Make sure to do your homework on the cool, warm, neutral lights colors and the wattage for each. Some guys put current regulators and such but I fuse mine and just run straight power to them if the batteries start ro run out the lights go dimmer!

What type of body of water is this, a bay? Im trying to start out but dont know where to start, i feel like the beaches by me will have too many waves even at night

  • @johnjennings487

I have the luxury of being able to fish/gig in the intercoastal waterway and away from the beach directly. I go in the edge of bays, the intercoastal waterways, rivers leading to the beach, small inlets at the beach where i can hide my jon boat from those waves. Went last night with my youngest son, in this same area as the video, and it was packed with boats but he did good and got his first "no help at all from dad" flounder.
