Wasted Space, Bro, I'm sorry for your loss. It isn't until we lose someone close that we realize we have missed so very MANY opportunities to ask questions about their lives and experiences. Times that are gone forever and will be lamented furthermore. If ONLY we would all sit down with our elderly family and acquaintances to pick their brains for the knowledge they possess before they are gone. We would ALL be better off for the opportunity and chances.

I have 2 12"ers. A BCM 12.5" 4150 1/7 CL and a LaRue 12" Stainless 1/8. I have many different length ARs (8, 10.3, 11.5, 12, 12.5, 13.7, 14.5, and 16"), but I use my two 12" more than any others. 12" is the perfect balance between maneuverability and acceptable ballistics. I can reach out to 4-500yds with my 1-4x or hit center mass all day long at 1-300yds with my TA31 . Same can be said with SPR style ARs. I will take my 13.7, 14 and 16 inchers all day over a 18" SPR. Maneuverability, weight, accuracy and ballictics are all very close to 18" SPRs but in a much more compact package. Biggest factor for using both of these non traditional barrel length ARs for their intended roles...Ammo selection! 12" ALL DAY FOR PATROL RIFLES! 13.7-16" ALL DAY FOR SPR/DMR RIFLES!

I switched our agency from 16 inch barrels to 11.5 FN's. I heard the whole "You can clear it with a 20 inch argument" but I have to look at it from an instructor (who instructs many who DON'T want to be at training) point of view, can I train more people faster with an SBR, yes. On top of that, how easily can I deploy an SBR over a standard rifle from a Dodge Charger with a vertical center rack. That answer is obvious. We also looked at engagement distances etc.

Man Sh!t anything less than 10.5 is just a fun range toy. Even 10.5 significantly reduced ballistic performance. I love my 10.5 inch pistol; but i wouldn't necessarily depend on it as a legit combat option (outside of my home). Battle rifles, 14.5-18in, spr 18-22in. Under 100yds 10.5 is fine; but you will still have terminal degradation. Gotta love the fireball on short barrels with cheap ammo though...LOL

FYI I started with a 1:8 .223 Wylde Bull barrel at 24" RIfle gas, then cutting to 20", 18", 16.5, now 12.5 carbine gas where I am stopping as this is short as possible to be in the >26" range. G>

Good job, Aaron. I admire your pragmatism in this video. I've long held to the belief that, the only thing predictable about terminal-ballistics, is that they are "un-predictable" and the closest we can come to gain any expectation is through artificial/improvised methods, like gelatin. Far too many variables out there, in the real-world. Even gelatin-based testing has deceived us, when compared to real-world performance. The sad and horrible truth, is that real-world metrics are calculated in the simple, horrible, thought of, "Did it work? Does he need another? Am I safe, now?" Having spent much time and effort, during my life, preparing myself to defend my life and those of my loved-ones, I have never once aspired to implementing the skills, that I believe I have achieved, and would prefer taking a walk through the park with the dog and family to having to undergo the un-romantic scenarios of the "push-back" of dealing with someone who was attempting to ruin my/our life.

Just came across your channel a few minutes ago.....thanks for the video! I only own one SBR and it happens to be a LWRC PDW. With a Trijicon MRO, I love the compactness and can very consistently hit a steel silhouette at 400 yards....but, if I had to do it over again I would have gone with a 10" barrel and normal sized stock......Unfortunately the learning curve with NFA firearms can be a costly adventure.......

Freaking FABULOUS, Sir! I have long wondered about this very topic myself but not having the $$ to perform similar testing I had to rely on a LOT of research and eventual extrapolation of data to compile enough to allow me to build my AR Pistol. I ultimately settled on a 10.5" tube for better handling for MY perceived needs, but that said, I'm seriously considering building another upper using the 12" tube as per your testing. Anyway, thank you for your time and efforts in creating this video. It has taken a LOT of the suppositions, myths, hype and, quite frankly, the BULLSH*T out of the equation. And let's not forget the EGO factor for those so afflicted with it as they just cannot deal with any scenario that hasn't been "qualified and quantified" by themselves. Right OR wrong. But your presentation? In a word, "Refreshing!" Color me as a new subscriber, Pardner. Keep on Keepin' on, Bro!! EDIT: Mounted a 10.5" barrel during my pistol build, finished assembling it then took it out to test it a day before a shoot get-together with friends. Damned thing would fire one round but only partially extract the case, never clearing the ejection port to extract fired round/insert next round. Long story short, I found out the guy selling the barrels (who I "thought" was a quality gun parts manufacturer) made a run of junk barrels. Mine had a chamber that was/is both very rough plus had/has a bulge reamed into the chamber somehow. The fired cases would swell upon firing but not fully release the chamber walls with the appropriate amount of gas from the barrel/gas tube which then refused to let the fired case get kicked out of the gun. Bought a NEW 11.5" Rosco barrel (dealer didn't have any 10.5" which is what I wanted at first, but the added inch and QUALITY barrel has made my pistol a GREAT little gun for MY needs.

Giving a sample of your DNA can have bad repercussions down the road if you cannot be an "Indian Giver" (no racism implied...just an OLD term) and using a catch basin to retain your "gift" of many potential babies. Of course that's just using one receptacle as an example when there are other um, ah, er, options, shall we say. Too often you poke fun at someone and they take it seriously. LOL Then you get saddled with a Dependapotamous Hippopotamus long term. Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.

It would be interesting to see the in between barrel length put up against the two lengths already tested. 11.5 seems to be gaining a lot of momentum in popularity for pistols and short barreled rifles. I hear a lot of talk of it being the do all length for pistols/SBR’s and would love your input on it.

I decided to build two SBR's one for home and one for vehicle and travel , I studied the ballistics and pro's and cons . My choice was the Wilson Combat 11.3 " for both SBR's . The Home defense SBR is chambered in 5.56 1in7 and I shoot a 68gr soft point at 2,500 fps consistently. The other is chambered in Wilson's 7.62 x 40 and I shoot Sierra 125gr. game king at 2,375 fps . I chose the thirty caliber Wilson round for my travel gun for higher energy at intermediate and mid range that might be encountered outdoors. After watching this video I think I made a prudent choice. I'm sure this video took a hell of a lot of work and it is really appreciated by me.

It's good, almost too good out of longer barrels. Both are extremely nasty...I just fed a racoon a mk262 round out of a 16" gun the other night and that exit was nasty 😳

Hey Aaron - any chance you could work some 300 AAC SBRs into the series as some point? My understanding is that round loses less velocity per inch of barrel length (removed), so I'd expect it would maintain good terminal ballistics out to a greater distance than a .223/5.56 in the shorter barrel lengths (like, into the 9" range). Would be interesting to see how 300AAC and 5.56 compare head to head at various ranges from SBRs with barrels of identical length. Thanks for the quality videos!

Stephen Besch ive done a couple 300 blk sbr s and love them. 10 inch barrel with a 5 inch can on the end makes a epic rifle! From what ive read (and could be mistaken) that the 300 blk cartridge burns all its powder in the first 8to 9 inches so a 10 barrel vs a 16 you shouldn't lose to much velocity. But havent crono ed it either.

  • @echosreloadingchamber7306

    @echosreloadingchamber7306

Stephen Besch the 300 AAC Blackout cartridge was designed with the use of fast-burning powders. I believe 10 and 1/2 in is the max barrel length you need to burn all the powder behind the bullet. However, having a 16 inch barrel versus a 10 and a half inch barrel the loss in velocity is almost not even noticeable. The extra barrel length tends to put more stability on the bullet as well. Especially when pushing the bullet to its maximum effective range distances of a hundred yards or so. That's been my conclusion on the 300 AAC Blackout cartridge. At a hundred yards with the supersonic UMC load out of a 16 inch barrel I'm getting around a 5in group. With the 10 and a half inch barrel same bullet same load I'm getting an eight to nine and a half inch group. I didn't even try subsonic at that range because of the drop of the 220 grain cartridge was just a waste of money on ammo. I'm sure you can get a hundred yards out of the 220 grain subsonic but I wasn't really trying to test that cartridge at the time.

300 BLK (in most cases) is designed for full powder burn at 9". Even with a full burn in 9" the gases are still expanding & pushing velocities higher in longer barrel lengths. It's also recommended to use a 6" pistol length gas system for most barrel lengths. But for SBRs/pistols I personally stay between 10.3" -- 12.5" for "work guns". That being said, there's no denying the "cool factor" of a 7" - 8" barrel with a can on it!

you might try some different ammo then. I zeroed my 300 at 150 yards. This puts me right at 2 inches high at 100, and 4 inches low at 200. Shooting subs I'm about dead on at 50 and about 8 inches low at 100. Groups hover in the 2-3 inch range with supers and using a red dot. Barnes TAC-TX have given the smallest groups for me so far.

Awesome video as always aaron. Question for you: do you recommend installing flared mag wells onto duty, home defense, or carry pistols? It would seem like a good idea to put something beneficial like a flared mag well on a duty pistol, but I've noticed you don't do the same. Is there a reason as to why? Would love to hear your thoughts on this idea

This validates my theories regarding mk262 performance between 10.5 and 12.5 barrels. I predicted that 10.5 falls below frag velocity by 90yd while 12.5 maintains. My guess is 12.5 will frag out to 150 or as far as 175. Thus I chose a 12.5 1/8 and it seems that was good. I will deal with another 2" of barrel for that tradeoff. Also less pressure and concussion to deal with.

stayfit_116. In brass casings I exclusively shoot reloaded, 77 grain Nosler bullet, 5.56mm rounds, cloned as close as I could chronograph to Mark 262, Mod 1 ammo. However, for practice inside 50 meters I shoot Tula, steel-cased, 75 grain .223. Much less expensive and at < 50m bullet size, velocity, steel or brass casings is irrelevant.

Fascinating results! By my math, the short barrel was spinning the bullets slightly faster than the longer, 1:8 barrel (~4000 rev/sec vs. ~3700 rev/sec). That's less than a 10% difference, but I still wonder if a projectile can be overstabilized in the terminal medium, leading to less fragmentation.
