Say GOODBYE To The American Dream (EVERYONE IS LEAVING!)

Ойын-сауық

More and more Americans are deciding that the American dream is now to leave! Shocker, it's getting too expensive to even survive here for most people let alone by a nice home being able to afford to raise children in it and also retire comfortably one day. As George Carlin said they call it the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.

Simplified my life. Got divorced, payed off all my debts, don't buy anything with credit, never go out to eat, cut my hours at work because I could now afford it, and live a much happier life. I remember having that house, a wife with all her wants, three vehicles, motorcycles, vacations, and having to work myself crippled. Sure don't miss it.

Americans migrate to Italy with U.S. Dollars, though. And many of those are retirees with pensions and IRAs (same goes with Spain -- British pensioners also relocate there, too). If you live in Italy with an Italian, local salary, it's pricey.

  • @RollingDude.

The average italian salary is around 1300 to 1500 euros. It may be just enough money to get by without any luxuries. Taxes in italy are absurdly high too so unless you make ALOT of money everyone end up making around the same due to taxes. They are a bit more laid back apparently though but you gotta really think about the life and thigs you would be whilling to sacrifice

Taxes EVERYWHERE in Europe are higher, but generally speaking those taxes pay for stuff. Health care and education are largely government funded. Military spending is limited. OK, I know that because of the Ukraine war, military spending will need to increase of necessity, but it will still not be CLOSE to American levels. In many or most European countries rents are controlled. The EU has strict laws about environmental and consumer protection. Many toxic chemical additives in American food are BANNED in the European Union. US corporations throw their weight about, and sometimes they aren't adequately controlled. EU bureaucracy and law making is by nature slow. Too slow, often. They are legislating for 27 countries, so it's not surprising. However, they usually get there in the end.

Been in Thailand for 7 months. Lost 35 pounds. Just from not eating processed foods. Had a condo for $600 right across the street from the beach. Food in a western restaurant about $5. Pork fried rice from a street stall is about $2. Went to Malaysia and got an extensive physical for $350. I’m happier in SE Asia. I’ve met many expats , most are Europeans. A few Americans. The people that say the USA is still the best haven’t been anywhere or haven’t been anywhere recently. Is Thailand perfect? No. Does Thailand have incredible value both monetarily and spiritually? For me the answer is yes. Let’s say I can get 99% of my needs met for 25-30% of the cost in the US. Add in the health benefits , and just being happier and FOR ME it’s over 100% of what my life was like in the US. Personally I miss the people in my life back in the US. I miss the food in Chicago. I’d do just about anything for some pizza right about now. But I don’t miss living in the US. Don’t miss the stress. Don’t miss the crime of Chicago. Definitely don’t miss the politics and the culture wars. You can live very well here for $1000-1500 a month in SE Asia. The only hiccup is immigration issues. Frankly they don’t want Americans in this neck of the woods. Russians , Chinese and others can stay in these countries for longer with less hurdles than you as a US Citizen can . But you can stay in Thailand for 6 months. Malaysia for 3 months. Vietnam for 3 months. Lather , rinse , repeat. Oh. You don’t see the homeless you see in LA here. You can walk around without a pistol to defend yourself like I’d advise you to do in Chicago. Those are the two places I’ve lived in the US. There is no value in the US. The schools suck. The healthcare system is insane. Cost of medicine is insane. Social issues are insane. I’m a blue collar guy. Union dude. Made a lot of money during my lifetime. But there is no value in the US anymore. You go to Kuala Lumpur and look out your hotel window and you can count 20-30 cranes building skyscrapers. How many cranes do you see in Chicago or NYC ? Asia is the future. The women are beautiful. I wish I could’ve done this 10 years ago. You are much better off making 40k a year as a digital nomad in Cambodia than you are making 100k a year in NYC or LA , or SF or Chicago. It’s all about value. There is no value in the US anymore. Stick a fork in it. It’s dead. Brings me no joy to say any of this. I have a son. I have family that lives in the US. The difference in how things are now and how they were just 5 years ago in LA , Los Angeles , Vegas , Phoenix and Chicago is incredible. And it’s not going in the right direction. If you need to make 100k a year just to tread water it doesn’t make any sense to live there. If your house is worth $1 million dollars but nobody can buy it because they need to make $200k a year to buy it and only 1% of the country makes that kind of money what good does that do you? They are trying to sell Jeeps for over $100k! A piece of shit Jeep! I love the US. I hate what it is becoming. But what can you do. For me. The best decision was to pack up my stuff and move. For you it may be to stay and fight. But I’d advise everyone to at least look into moving abroad. Could be Europe. Could be Latin America. Could be Asia. There may be someplace that is a better for for you. Or maybe not. Personally I’d rather thrive than struggle. And if it doesn’t work out I can always go back and get my $25 Big Mac Combo at McDonalds

Where your American job can come to an end overnight if your company gets bought out or you just lose your position. You think your job is safe ? If you do you’re either very young or very naive. Yes. People who grew up without money understand that money is important AND understand money doesn't equal happiness. Happiness isn't inherent in money. But having money makes navigating life so much easier, and that includes being able to do the things you need to do to lower your own stress. That is a big part of the key to a happy life, just getting to that point where your existence and how you're going to get by isn't stressful... where you don't have to think about every dollar. At that point you can actually focus on building up your life and thriving.

My husband and I are long haul truckers. We live in our truck. Our life is very simple but enjoyable. Everything we need we have in an 8.5x8.5 space(except running water). We could have purchased a house years ago, but why when we are on the road 341 out of 365 days out of the year. We cook all of our food(organic) in a crock pot/dutch oven/microwave. Carry a large freezer, canned goods, Fiji water/distilled water and all that we need to live quite comfortably. Our showers are free at truck stops where we fuel, laundry there as well. But most of all we are very happy living like this. Every day is different, the scenery is interesting and we laugh alot at the things we see. We earn a paycheck while we travel. Our joke to each other is if civil war breaks out in this country, it's hard to hit a moving target(us).!😊

I am one of those Americans who found "the American dream" abroad. My company gave me a 6 month secondment in Malta, 25 years ago. We enjoyed our life here so much that when it was time to return, I managed to get a permanent role in the UK. Ok - you can get more materials goods in the US, my siblings have bigger houses and better cars. The stress of life is much less here, there is much more emphasis on the work life balance (30 days of paid vacation). Also my kids are much better educated and we don't worry about healthcare. The main thing my wife and I notice (when we see our family in the US) is how we don't live in fear. We notice that when we go back to the US (we visit at least once a year) how scared everyone seems to be and how that stresses everyone out. I will fully admit that things have gotten worse here (particularly after Brexit) and it is a lot tougher for Gen Z, but we still find the quality of life is much better than when we compare ourselves to our siblings. Though I find we struggle a lot less than my counterparts in the US

Hi Mike. The country is basically done. It’s only a matter of time before it’ll really be over. I’ve been to all 50 states, the Caribbean US territories along with Caribbean countries and on all the six livable continents plus other places with 17 countries in total. I was very lucky in the travel area in my life to have had the opportunities to go to all those places over the years. I can tell you and others that it’s all about perspective. Life outside the US is cheaper using the USD but the culture and language might be different. There’s pros and cons in any situation. People forget there is no perfect situation. The US is definitely a very expensive country with political corruption and lots of crime these days. Inflation is not going down but going up. The current liberal government just keeps lying to us. Trump for 2024! Has your life even been affected by inflation? Do you find life is harder now even in Florida? I sometimes look around me and wonder how people can afford everyday life. I’m a big fan of the channel myself. Many people don’t get married or have kids now just because of inflation. It’s just the reality.

I'm from Brazil, and being able to work in America and buy a house cash in Brazil and not be a slave to the bank is a huge game changer. The reason why Americans are so miserable is because they live to work. In Brazil, we work to live. The standard there is to have four weeks of paid vacation each year. We actually have time to spend with our families and friends. Here in America nobody seems to have time. It's a mindless culture of clocking in, and clocking out.

I feel torn & guilty for even thinking about leaving when my parents sacrificed so much to come here to America to give us a better life. I never really liked most American men I’ve met here, I want to be in walkable cities, not live in a suburban neighborhood, and not worry about being shot for knocking on the wrong door or something. My boyfriend does not even want to live in the states either when we’ve talked about our future plans together. I still appreciate the opportunities this country gave me and I worked hard to make the most of it, but my true happiness is in another country. I’m hoping to move in with my boyfriend to his home country once we are ready.

It is what it is. Our ancestors went through a lot worse. Depression, wars, disease. We have been very spoiled especially from the 90’s. Things will come back again. But best thing you can do is live simply and buy or rent only what you need, not want, to get by and have gratitude for the small things. Something people seem to be missing. They want more more and more. And seem to think they should be entitled to it. No one said life was easy. Life is a series of ebbs and flows. Live simply and minimalistically, find joy in nature, animals and human connections.

You can actually walk places as not everyone is so insecure that they need to drive a dump truck around in grid lock traffic. Cities are designed for humans, not those dump trucks. Could literally move there and buy a nice house in cash, amazing weather, and not have to worry about getting laid off and not having health care or going bankrupt if I get sick. It just all makes you think, if the US is so awesome and rich, why does the quality of life totally suck compared to a place with a much smaller GDP? What the heck am I paying for? Where are my tax dollars going?

Yes the dream is abroad. I spent 6 years in China, 3 of which I worked legally as a teacher. 1.5 I was an illegal employee because I faked my degree (didn't have one at the time) and before that 1.5 years I was an unemployed bum living off a small allowance from family. My first time in China, 2010, you could eek out a decent living for $500-1k/month in Shanghai. Nowadays it's not so easy to get a teaching job because they've tightened qualifications a little more than back in 2010, they've removed the after school language centers, and the cost of rent has gone up. Although, you can still have a decent life for less than in the US and you can earn a good salary. When I left right when covid was ending in 2022, I was getting paid 25k/month rmb which at the time was about $3k usd and all I had to do was work 25 hours in the classroom. Of course, teaching requires more hours outside of the classroom grading papers and planning lessons, but I'd argue it's still easier or better than being a teacher in the USA. It's not that I hate the US, but I don't like the poor state of the health in this country both physically and mentally. I don't like the fact that I'm easily replaceable at any job I go to whereas in another country I'm one of a few people that speak English which can get me a job as a teacher for 25hrs/wk and a livable salary.

i realized about 8 years ago that in order to ever retire or become financially stable i would essentially have to do nothing but work and live as cheaply as possible for about 10 years. after that life will be good. im in year 5 of that right now and it is working, slowly. truth is that to get ahead nowadays you have to take extreme measures. been working 50-60 hour weeks and no vacations for 5 years while saving 70% of my take home income. it's extreme minimalism combined with basically embracing being a slave, with the reward of it only being temporary.

@@MeditateMeHigherI wouldn’t say I’m part of a group or movement, as I don’t plan to ever stop working (what would I even do with all that time other than go insane) but I did organically through my own experiences come to the conclusion that if you want abnormal results you have to have abnormal behavior. I looked around and realized everyone’s broke and working until the day they die just to survive and I realized that if I don’t want to end up with the same fate I need to NOT do what they’re doing. This lead me into a saving mindset that has honestly made my life mosltly carefree. I don’t have stress even about losing my job because my finances are secure. Highly recommend it.

I love reading books and with the internet everything entertainment wise is at my fingertips. I love living life, every day I wake up with a smile on my face, I don't need relationships, I don't need a big house and car, I don't want a hectic social life, I just want to be grateful that I can eat and drink and I have a roof over my head, the simple life is the best by far.

I've traveled quite a bit in Mexico, the Caribbean and SouthAmerica. While the USA is cleaner , more organized and things appear nicer. There is a feeling of freedom and relaxation I experience in these places that I do not feel here at home. It's hard to explain. I think it is partially the relaxed attitudes of the locals. I've heard many expats talk about feeling this relief. At first I assumed it was a vacation vibe but now I think its the societal attitudes of these locations.

Travelers have a false sense of security so visiting vs living somewhere is totally different. That being said, I live in France and I say say certainly that people are less "on-edge" in Europe and less stressed because much of their basics in life - healthcare for example, is already taken care of. Life in the US is full of conflict - road rage, greed, anger and violence, addiction.... the whole system feeds off this. People are always in a rush because there is this feeling like everything is in scarcity - time, money, being more than or taking from others.

We can only see in our own generation but things were bad years ago you just weren’t there to see it. Be positive, make yourself valuable learn skills you can still be happy without being rich just have to open your eyes there’s a lot of beauty in this world dont let it pass you up.

That is correct. That is usually what gives me hope is that we were worse off in the past and made it through. From what I hear from my parents things were pretty bad back in the 70s and 80s. When my dad built his first house in 1976 for $35,000 at 13% only making around $3 an hour. Yes the house was cheaper, but that would be the same as me making $30 an hour and buying a $300,000 at 13% today. Yikes! I'll stick with my mediocre small house at 4.25% that I only have $90k left to pay. It's not a fancy life, but decent enough.
