Saw Head Lifting System - Band Sawmill Build #15

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

WATCH WORKING SAWMILL HERE: • Sawmilling Furring Str...
Fabricating part of the stabilizer frame - it still needs cross braces and diagonal reinforcements which I can add after the band wheels and motors are on their place so I can check that everything clears everything. The lifting system / cut depth adjustment system is made from ATM Monkey (Honda Monkey clone) old sprockets and a 25 mm round stock. I will change the sprockets and chain for new ones in the future. The 25 mm round stock / shaft feels kinda flimsy so some kind of support in the center of it would be good or changing it to a bigger diameter shaft later on. But I will see if it's needed in the future. The hand crank is temporary, also the mount I made for it. It will sit on the cross brace when I get to reinforcing the frame. But now I will start fabricating the frame for band wheels and motors. Stay tuned for future videos! Thanks for watching!

    Looks like a great setup with the gearing to lift the weight it will eventually hold. Looks like the cable anchor points (lollipops) could be closer together so the cables will not be on the angle they’re on when the carriage is lifted causing them to rub as they get wound up.

  • @DonnDIY

    @DonnDIY

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yup, you're right. Have to play around with it a little. Maybe change the cable anchor points up on the shaft and alter the direction of cable spooling. Or if the cable starts to chip away change to motorcycle chains.

    The guide columns could be made of round pipe, to which the grating system was adapted. The metal cable is too in demand on that small diameter shaft, so a larger diameter drum was required. Good luck and like!

    That steel cable idea is ingenious.

  • @impactodelsurenterprise2440

    @impactodelsurenterprise2440

    5 жыл бұрын

    Let me explain myself: 1) Elimate the use of chains and accompanying sprockets, this reduce cost and increase reliability. 2) Steel cable is much stronger. A #60 chain width 1/2" has a load capacity of 17000lbs, whereas a steel cable of the same diameter has a load capacity of 25000lbs. Chains normally fail from the weakest link, so if only one of the hundreds of pins in a chain fails, its catastrophic. 3) Steel cable carrying a load wrapping around the relatively smaller shaft has a much lower torque compared to a chain being on a larger sprocket. For example a 4" sprocket induces 4x more torque on a 1" shaft compared to the steel cable version. Therefore, a more powerful motor is required.

    I enjoy watching your build. In your design you should hold the crank so that the weight of the lifted object won't fall back due to gravity,mind considering another gearing system that would stay put even after you release it. I'm sure you'll find ways. Thanks by the way, Great Build!,lookin' forward for more.

    I wonder how difficult it might be to design/build/install a guide for the line kind of like what they have on baitcaster fishing reels? The guide moves side to side and the line passes through it so that it ensures a tight spiral around the spool.

    I had an idea, sort of. But mostly figuring stuff out while I build taking into account the material I have and building according to the material. Thus all of the choices I make aren't all the best per say but I'm gonna make it work if anything doesn't function as I hoped it would. There will be definitely a couple of things I have to revisit and rethink. I'm glad you like it and I appreciate you watching the videos. Thanks!

    The saw head will probably weigh around 90-100 kg, so it should be pretty stable. When the blade is sharp and adjusted correctly it shouldn't start weaving in the log at all. I would like to add eccentric stops just in case - I don't trust these cables very much. And maybe revisit the upper shaft. It feels a bit flimsy.
