Saving a Vintage Art Deco Smoking Stand

This old table literally reeks of the era when everyone smoked, wore hats and dressed to the nines. When Big Bands ruled the airwaves, big cars ruled the roads and even an ashtray was built with style. Something like this needs to be preserved if only to remind us how things once were and could be again. Let's get busy! #artdeco #vintagefurniture #chrome #1940s #smokingstand #ashtray

Wow! That's interesting! I never thought these would have been in an outdoor setting but I can see how that would look by the old beach chairs.

They were EVERYWHERE! ALSO, the way my Nana and Russ lived, I am SURE they were 'past their prime' and someone said to Nana and Russ "you want these? If not then I am just going to throw them away"........ Nana NEVER threw anything away!

I fully agree; everything was built with style back then, that's why I enjoy watching your brother restore old cars, However, that doesn't mean everything from the past is worth the effort to save it. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to seeing you save some of those other, more worthwhile items.

Great job on refurbishing that old automatic ash tray. I had one where the handle was a greyhound. Never seen ash trays with a fan like you showed on yours. Enjoyed it very much. Thank you for sharing! 💯👊👍

I've seen the greyhound handles before. I think it was on one that was all chrome with a glass dish. Back then everything had design flair as well as purpose.

Morning! I have to tell you, I’m 60 and retired early from a stressful job to enjoy my shop, I love restoring tools and fixing things along with organizing my shop! I watched your brothers videos BUT I’m really hooked on your videos because I love restoring things as they might be used vs looking brand new because I’m trying to keep the story behind each tool. Keep up the great job, stay focused on you being you, great content!! - Cliff.

Thanks! Always good to meet someone who likes to restore old tools and things. "Restoring things as they might be used" is a great way to describe a lot of what I do on this channel. Mind if I steal that line? :)

I came up with that saying because as I enjoy restoring or removing rust I LOVE seeing how an old tool was used! I can tell if someone cared much about, abused it or cherished it. I recently restored an old pipe wrench and found initials and was thinking who was this person whom put those on it because they obviously didn’t want to lose it while on a job. Keep up the great job!!

Last thing, I learned to care for tools and equipment from being a Fire Chief in Texas and electrician, You learn really quick in both fields the quality of a tool can save your life! Don’t stop restoring, my Grandfather always said in his days they never threw out always repaired!

I'm glad to hear you don't allow smoking, but that only makes me wonder why you're not restoring something from that era that's not a part of smoking. I actually like seeing people restore things, which is why I enjoy watching Richard and Christina restore old cars.

I see your point. To me it's more about style and history. If you look at the photo from the train car you'll see that there are drinks, condiments and menus on the tables. There's even a boy shown using one. They weren't exclusively for smoking.

And I see your point; it's how you view it. Perhaps you could replace the ash tray with a candy bowl. Wouldn't that be just as good? Incidentally, I used to smoke, but I quit back in 1970.

I'm sure by the time this video comes out, you probably already have it done. I would have suggested lead (probably would be period correct), would have been the best thing for the weight in the bottom.

  • @floridarusticrepairs

Agreed. As far as I know, these all had heavy cast iron weights within that circular thin metal base. That's what the fan versions I worked on have so I think this would be the same. I had thought about trying to locate a heavy weight but then I decided to see what I had lying around which could serve a similar purpose. Since you can't see the saw blades and they're the older heavy types it was a good fit.

Fascinating project. OK, smoking is now considered both a health risk and very antisocial. But back in the day smoking was everywhere. Sports people even smoked during games. John Daly isn't averse to the odd ciggie between shots. Anyway you can't you can't expunge history and hopefully something like this will educate young people of the dangers of the smoking vice.

You have "other smoking tables?" Why are you so interested in something like that; especially when you don't permit smoking in your house? Isn't that rather self-conflicting? There are so many other things from that era that you could be restoring.

I showed two of them at the beginning of this video. They're the table fan combinations. I'm interested in anything early to mid 20th century. Electric fans, radios, phonographs, jukeboxes, furniture, lighting, tools and even these tables. Everything was built with style back then.

To me it's an art deco table that goes with the period decor of my home which was built in the same era. I don't allow smoking in my house.
