I wanted to check in because I made notes of your reading prompts when the video posted and those are the books that I've read so far inspired by your prompts (it should be noted that I picked out of order from the list based on what I was in the mood to read and also availability at the library): 1) A Booktuber or Bookstagrammer’s Favourite Book of 2023 - Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. This one was... interesting. I like how unique it is and the fact that it is open to interpretation. Will not make my personal top list of the year, though. 2) Backlist Book by a Favourite Author - Us Against You from Fredrik Backman. I have not been disappointed by a single book from this author so far. 3) A Book Set in a City, Town or Region Where You’ve Lived Longer Than a Year - À l'ombre de la Sainte Mafia from Claire Bergeron. The story is set in the area where I grew up. 4) Read a Book By An Author You’ve Never Read Before - The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine 5) A Book with a Snake on the Cover - I had borrowed Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo and I could quickly tell that this would not be my style. DNF'ed it about 50 pages in. I am following your lead and making a conscious effort to DNF books to move on to better fits. That is the whole reason I got my library card in the first place: to not feel guilty about not finishing a book (which is harder to do if I paid for it out of pocket).

@@SavidgeReads no not at all, it's lovely and without being too deep I lost my mum several years ago so it's extra special to see that - reminds me of me and my mum dissolving into fits of giggles. The bits where your mum is silently reading a prompt and she's unconsciously pulling a face that makes you laugh, those bits really made me laugh.

I could watch videos of the two of you together all day, the dynamic between you makes me laught and smile. And I always end up with a lot of new amazing book recommendations!

Oooh I would highly recommend The Essex Serpent, that was my book of the year the year that I read it.

Watching you two is far better than tuning in to the TV! January will see me reading The Marriage Portrait which has a snake on the cover. I think one of the hardest ones is the volcano on the cover, so if anyone is struggling there is a short read (circa 140 pages) by Kate Mosse called The Black Mountain. Happy New Year to you both and thank you for doing the prompts again.

That is the Kate Mosse book I mentioned to mum, The Black Mountain. It is great, supper short but packs a punch. There is also a Canadian book called My Volcano which is the one I will be heading to. There's some other fab recommendations on the Storygraph challenge too. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Volcano, immediately thought of Graham Greene but it was written by Lowry, so that's wrong. Susan Sontag has a Volcano on the cover of one of her books. Starting the year with a laugh, Dorsey's Naked Came the Florida Man, love those psychopaths Serge and Coleman. Happy New Year!🎉

Ooh. Some good ones! Louise Gluck came to mind first. Simon Armitage would pair nicely. As someone else said there is a volcano on some copies of Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano. There's also Shusaku Endo's Volcano, but that's pretty grim. There's a snake on some covers of Brian Jacques' Red Wall. I might get to Gluck this year.

I am so cross with myself, I thought I had that very book on my shelves, spent ages hunting for it but think I culled it at some point - sigh! Thankfully there are other options but that one instantly sprung to mind. I spend ages hunting high and low, ha!

For your backlist, I have just read the galley for the new Chigozie Obioma novel out this year called The Road to the Country. I can't understand why I am not seeing it on many most anticipated list?? This is a writer who gets absolute fantastic reviews, has been a finalist for the Booker prize twice, yet not as widely read. I would suggest you begin with The Fishermen, which I believe is a modern classic.

Oooh is that for July when it’s a backlist of one of our favourite authors? I haven’t read any of Obioma’s books (I might have tried it when it was up for the Booker) so I can’t call him a favourite author. I actually don’t call an author a favourite until I’ve read three books by them I’ve really liked/loved. I can’t speak for mum though think she got his second as it’s a retelling of a Greek myth.

It is really easy to import your books from Goodreads to Storygraph so you don't lose anything. Also it is an indie black owned start up which has no links to Amazon!
