SAUSAGE IN THE LOUGH (The Wild Atlantic Way || Beara Peninsula)

Come join us for a week in our life living in a van along the Wild Atlantic Way in winter. We immediately fall in love with Beara's beauty and tranquility.
We are Tom and Iz - a couple from Cornwall who decided to hit the road and embrace a new way of life, living and exploring in our tiny home on wheels, La Bamba. We invite you along with us on our adventures in our weekly vlogs. We love to embrace adventure and soak up nature every day! We're currently traveling around Ireland in our transit van along the Wild Atlantic Way. Ireland has really stolen our hearts; come along with us on this week's episode as we begin our explorations around the Beara Peninsula. If you've missed our travels along the WAW so far - check out our previous episodes, we upload weekly on a Sunday at 5pm :)
First pit stop of our week is back to Argos in Killarney to buy (another) new drone after our recent accidents with the drones. We take the scenic route to and from Killarney and experience some roads we haven't travelled on before. En route, Isabel gets a call to ask if she wants to go live on Cork's Red FM the next day to chat about Lost in Transit, she agrees excitedly and we find out first park up spot in the Beara Peninsula. It's the perfect spot with a beautiful stone jetty out on to a lake. The next day she nervously await her live stint on the radio before getting the call!
We awake the next day at this stunning spot and Isabel really wants to have a swim but unfortunately someone the night before had deposited some off putting food into the lake, lol! We decide against a swim there and go off to explore the Uragh stone circle, then we try to visit the Glenichaquin Park but unfortunately it's closed at this time of year, but we still enjoy some drone footage of the amazing waterfall.
We join back with the Wild Atlantic Way and we have a vanlife lunch in what we call our "cab-servatory". We are already in love with Beara's beauty and we drive past a beautiful woodland and have to turn back and explore because it looks so enchanted! We walk the Doorus loop and enjoy the varied scenery we are treated to. After no luck having a swim in the lake that morning, we drive on the Eyeries motorhome park where Isabel shows you our outdoor shower set up (at night). Cold but so good to feel clean! Isabel shows you around the campsite whilst Tom has his shower in the daylight! We feed the neighbouring donkeys some apple then head out for the day to explore the Eyeries loops, we end up doing all three walking loops around Eyeries and highly recommend! We have a pit stop for Peanut Butter Jelly sandwiches and compare the Cornish and Devon way of applying jam and peanut butter like a cream tea ha. We continue our Ireland admiration and head to find somewhere to stay for the night. We find, by chance, the Beara Bowl , an amazing bowl shape cut out in the rocks with incredible stormy seas swirling around. We enjoy watching the wild sea until sunset then find another perfect camping spot along the road.
The next day we head to Allihies and admire it's strong ties to Cornwall, lots of copper mining occurred in the area and lots of Cornish people came over to teach others how to mine. We set off on an 18km walk around Allihies which passes around some copper mines. We find Ireland's only "Man Engine House" and Tom explains how it works! We trek along for 18km and find ourselves very tired by the end of the expedition! We finish the day off with a refreshing dip and will share more of our adventures on the Beara Peninsula next week. We really do love it here!
If you enjoyed the video please consider liking, commenting and subscribing! We do try to reply to everybody & we thoroughly enjoy reading all your responses and apologise for any delays in getting back to you! Thank you soo much for watching, I hope you all have a great week!
We are blown away we have been by this community's support and generosity!! Thank you for all the wonderful kind comments and support in this past week!! We are very touched and absolutely love reading your kind words!
Isabel and Tom :) x

Alahies, it's looking as beautiful as I remember it. It's 25 years since I visited. We nearly took the cable-car to Dursey Island - "nearly" because when we looked inside the cab there was a big hole in the floor where the timber lats had given way. It was a death-trap. I gather cattle or sheep would be carried over in the contraption - it certainly smelled like that. I gather it's been done up since. History of Dursey Island is interesting, although sad. When Cromwell sent George Carew (incidentally, from Devon) over with with his New Model Army in 1601, Dursey had a relatively large population of 300. The women and children were rounded up into the church on the island and it was set alight. The men were tied back-to-back and tipped into Dursey Sound (where the cable-car crosses over). Possibly still ahead of you this week is Skibbereen, home of the Olympian O'Donovan brothers of Skib Rowing Club. Graham Norton has a holiday-home in Kilcrohane. Baltimore was sacked by barbary pirates in 1631, with over 100 men, women and children seized and brought as slaves to north Africa. Enjoy the rest of your travels. Your footage is always brilliant and inspiring. Some day I'll do the WAW.

Hey Brian - thank you for sharing the history of Dursey - I didn't realise this - how awful what happened in the church. We crossed dursey sound in the cable car in tonights episode coming out at 5pm. It is still as rickety as how you describe but we safely crossed! its being done up for maintenance work april to september I believe this year. Take care and thank you for watching.

The Beara Peninsula is lovely...it's amazing how you can go from wild and rugged landscapes to an almost lush landscape in the space of a mile. I hope you can re visit the West of Ireland 🇮🇪 one day in Summer or late Spring to see the incredible Fuschia and Crocosmia , Honeysuckle and Foxglove hedgerows . But your films are also showing how much beauty is there in Winter..thanks again for sharing the ride!. Cheers, Steve

Great video as usual. One thing I love about your trip along the Wild Atlantic Way is that when I was over there I did the Dingle, Ring of Kerry, went to Killarney National Park and the Gap of Dunloe, and went to Mizen Head, but didn't have time to do it all, so you're kind of filling in all the gaps of what I didn't have time to see and do, so thank you. We did make it to Kenmare, a lovely town, I think we stopped there for a coffee and cake (Ireland does amazing cakes in their coffee shops, all homemade I think), and probably drove over that pass back towards Killarney, which was amazing scenery. I guess having to go back and get a new drone has some advantages (you've got to look on the bright side).

Another beautifully shot, edited and delivered video, showing some super scenery of a county I had the honour of living in for 7 years, the people are just as inviting/friendly. But as always there's always a sausage guy about, I guess thankfully on this occasion it was somewhat biodegradable. Great Sunday evening treat to chill out and watch. Good to see you battled the storms, and wisely took care of the drone. You've me hooked on 'The reason why', was very surprised by the parallels of Cornish and the west of Ireland, and your conflict of tagging the places you visit. Looking forward to sitting down and watching your back catalogue. Enjoy your travels/exploration. No harm in you linking the 'buy me a coffee' to each of your videos 'mini documentaries' giving us the opportunity to support. Brendan

Eyries to Allihies is a great drive in both directions. In the summer there are sheep everywhere. Looked fantastic, good call on the drone, it would have carried at least half way to Cornwall. If you get a chance you should head over to Dursey Island on the cable car - there's a good 50m drop visible through the floorboards so a little unnerving. It's the only cable car I've taken that had a holy water font - I guess they want you to take every possible precaution ;-).

Great Vlog guys. Glad ye enjoyed the Kingdom. Some savage spots ahead of ye in "Wesht" Cork too. Barleycove and Subtropicalesque Glengarriff! And of course the Rebel Capital Cork, lived there myself for 11 years. Lonely Planet described it many years ago as a city on the cusp of an arts and music renaissance. I have to say having lived in similar sized cities elsewhere it's fairly accurate. As someone that's also not a fan of cities generally, Cork is different. It feels more like a village but it's the capital of the peoples Republic sure "bai" and I'd say definitely he friendliest city in the world :-) enjoy

Hi Folks. Love your videos. Your zest for life is infectious and always brings a smile. On the Beara you should have a look at the ruins of Dunboy castle (just west of Castletownbere) from where you will have a view of Bere Island and Hungry Hill in the distance as you look east from the castle ruins. I believe that the copper mines on the Beara peninsula were owned by a family called Puxley and the ruins of their mansion are to be found close to Dunboy castle ruins. Daphne Du Maurier's novel 'Hungry Hill' was inspired by this family. Enjoy the rest of your travels and stay safe. Regards, Don from Kildare.
