Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 vs New Balance SuperComp Trainer: Which plated training partner is best?

Спорт

The New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer and Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 are both plated training shoes designed to be used in partnership with a racing shoe, but they approach this brief in very different ways. The SuperComp Trainer has a 47mm stack shoe and is designed to be as bouncy as possible to protect the legs on training runs, whereas the Speed 3 is light and nippy, delivering a fast and efficient ride while also being comfortable on easy runs.
Which should you go for then? In this video Run Testers Tom and Nick discuss the pros and cons of both shoes and deliver their verdict on which is the best.

Great video as always! Iam looking forward to Novablast 3 in channel. I have tried them and they are much more nimble and light than their predecessors. For me they are a good competitor to Endorphin Speed 3

I am constantly raving about the Nova 3 to my friend who's also a runner. There isn't a daily trainer like it on the market, imo. I just ordered the Speed 3 because I have to see how it rides, but having tried plated shoes in the past, I'm not sure I need the Speed 3. The Nova 3 is fantastic. I will throw in the fact that I am very slow (former sprinter and college football player), so my perspective certainly won't be that of the vast majority of runners. I'm buying two more pair of Nova 3's, without question.

Fully agreed! at 1st look, the SuperComp Trainer seems good for long run but eventually I found it 's tired to run on its for over an hour. Not sure it is because of its weight or the design of this shoes.

I like the speed 3 after over 100km of use but i do not like the upper or the heel counter. The platform is indeed wider but the upper just doesn't work well with my feet for some reason. Would like to try the wide version. That being said outside of that it is a great ride.

NB Trainer is a difficult shoe to accommodate in a rotation. You don't need a carbon plated shoe for daily short easy or recovery runs plus it is pretty expensive for that purpose and for long runs it is heavy and it adds up over miles. It is also a heavy shoe for speed work. So, it is a very limited use case shoe. On the other hand, Endorphin Speed is a great daily trainer, decent shoe for long runs, can be used for HM or Marathon racing and can also be used for speed interval work though I would rather pick up something else (PUMA Liberate, Adidas Takumi Sen 8, etc.) for that purpose.

Interesting thoughts now that we've seen a preview of the SC Trainer v2, which seems like a more versatile shoe.

Hi Tom and Nick! So what are the ultimate long run shoes if the SC Trainer is too stressful and the Speed 3's are a bit too geared for speedwork? Thanks again for these videos, they're so fun to watch :)

Does the SuperComp offer anything that the Prime X doesn’t? Likewise I have the Pro 3 so does the Speed 2 offer anything else other than a little more durability?

Great review. Two questions: 1. Sizing? I had to go a full size up in the Pro 1 and 2. Would you say the length about the same for the Speed 3? 2. Clydesdale factor: Which is better for your larger followers?

Same for me ..I wear a size 13 novablast 2 and new balance more v3. I tried the speed 3 size 13 and it was too short. Tried a size 14 because they don't make 13.5 and it was too big.

If the shift 3 is gonna ride like a nicely broken in ride 15 it’s gonna be a winner. Pretty sure it’s gonna be the same midsole n insole.

The problem I find with the SC Trainer or these super high stack stiff shoes like the Prime X is that they really force a heavy "hip strategy" and my quads end up getting quite tired out because it does shift all the work up the legs. Definitely have that problem with the Metaspeed Sky+ and Alphafly 2 to some extent (moreso than 1) too though. They don't allow for much toeoff or "ankle strategy" and I seem to do well with some more of that in the mix. Shoes like the Speed 3 or Vaporfly or many other supershoes seem to have a better balance between the two that works better for my stride.

I wanted to like the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 in wide but the toe box was uncomfortably tight on my toes, it’s gathering dust. I have the SC trainer in wide as well and they are great, they feel great for my HR zone 2 running for distances between 5-13 miles. Why does every reviewer complain about stability? It’s super stable. Do more weight training to build strength instead of just running.

SC Trainer almost seems a one trick pony where the Speed 3 just have so much to offer at most paces and then the price difference! Speed 3 for most of my training (love the Streakfly for 200m & 400m reps) and the then Vaporfly/Alphafly or Pro 3 for racing (just got Pro 3 today and will be doing 10k and half marathon races in the next month)

I have the New Balance SuperComp Trainer v1 and absolutely love how much bounce it has on landing and it is so kind on my legs on my hour long slow runs. I tried the Speed 3 in a shop and it felt loose on my feet and didn't seem to have much bounce. @TheRunTesters is there anything in the current line up that is as comfortable and has as much bounce especially for slow runs?

  • @jameswestmoreland9717

Wait. In some ways, they are in the same category, a testament to the speed3's ,versatility. The Spee3 is regarded as a great all-rounder shoe for longer runs, speed work, daily runs and even racing. So it might work as a longer training shoe and daily teainer cshoe much like the purpose of the SC trainer. Someone looking for a do it all shoe like the speed 3 could be interested in how it compares to other long run shoes. And the prices are close.

I bought the super comps without an pervious research, and it’s the worst shoe I’ve ever bought. Super hard to run in them for anything longer than 3 miles. Worst part I threw away the box and can return them 😢. Do not buy the super comps.

You guys are so sensitive. The trainer has such an incredible blend of cushion and stability. Never felt anything like it. Yes, it's not a speed shoe, but the energy turn and preserving your legs is unrivaled.
