SATURN VUE NO CRANK NO COMMUNICATION CASE STUDY

Welcome back to another case study! Today we have a 2008 Saturn Vue with a 2.4 4 cylinder Ecotec engine. The customer complaint is that the vehicle is a no start and that it has no communication with the ecm. Follow along as I take you step by step through the diagnostic and troubleshooting process to fixing this vehicle. Also, some ecu programming stuff!

    Much respect to you guys, I'm 75 and remember the days when you could look down on either side of the engine and see the ground. I watched your video which was extremely comprehensive, wondered if you can learn all of this by watching an older fellow and so-called on the job training, or is it necessary to learn much of this at school.

Also I want to get a second Ignition key but don't want to pay $70. if this Launch can do it. Also I need to relearn the crank and cam sensors and battery registration. It just won't let me do the battery registration. Possibly update the ECM also ?

    Another Excellent video!! A couple of things I'd like to add. If the ground pin is suspect you might have checked if the LOW REFs have ground in them with the computer plugged. If they do then the ECM is receiving a good ground. And while at it, you might want to check the 5V refs too, see if the ECM has at least some power. And if all this fails you might want to power it on a bench and see if there is COM outside of the car. Also an incandescent test light would work better for powers and grounds as it loads the circuit. Maybe with a 1.5 amp incandescent tail light as a test light. I've needlessly purchased ECMs and have been burnt before by power probes. Once I had a bad ground on an installed corroded junkyard engine. Another time I had another bad power due to corroded wires. The probe didn't detect the faulty voltage, but the test light did. Finally, you know what they say about the ECM being the most expensive fuse. You might want to check WHY the ECM was burnt in the first place. I've had to put in ECM after ECM on the same car at my expense, just because something in the car, some sensor or solenoid, was making it burn out again and again. Just some advice for others.

    Good video just my personal opinion when Im cheking powers and ground I like to load the circuit with some current. The power probe is giving you that, but is not loading the circuit to say 100% is good. Here in the desert of las vegas green crusty is rare but it happen. Power probe saying there is a ground or power still not enough to me to call it good

  • @DrewGangl
    @DrewGangl4 жыл бұрын

    So you didn’t check the datalink? You do realize if a datalink wire or terminating resistor is bad it will cause the exact same symptom, right? Just because an ECM is getting power and ground but not talking on the network doesn’t mean the ECM itself is bad. The network it’s talking on may be the issue. I would seriously consider revising this video with this information included. This diagnostic routine has a very high chance of resulting in a misdiagnosis, and a costly one at that.

    Great case study. Straight to the point and you included the programming procedure for those who might not have done it before or are curious about what it takes. Something I will note, as it has bitten me before - I've been fooled by my Power Probe showing good voltage or ground despite the circuit not being able to carry a load. Once I've verified that powers and grounds are good, I'll unplug the connector(s) and put a load on the circuits (I have a 3157 bulb and pigtail I like to use) just to ensure they can carry the load of the ECM. Thanks for posting your video. I hope you are safe and well, considering the craziness lately with covid-19.

    I think it would crank over and start but the other modules on the data link would not communicate with it. I might be wrong though. I had a Saturn one time where the scan tool would not communicate with any modules but started and ran perfectly. I found one of the CAN circuits to the data link connector was broken. Repaired that and all good.

    All vehicles using CAN or in this case LAN networks have 2 to 4 tiers of network, separated by speed. Usually main modules will communicate through more than one. Satellites sometimes not so much.

    Just as a heads up, before condemning a module besides checking power and grounds (should be LOAD tested)...you should also make sure none of the voltage regulated module outputs (typically 5 volt references) are not shorted as well. Many modules will "shut-down" if their output voltages are shorted.

    So I have a 2009 Saturn Vue and thought the starter was bad (single click when trying to start it). I put a new starter in and hooked up the two wires around the top terminal of the starter (power I believe) and plugged in the wire with the plastic clip (purple wire). Went to start the car and it didn't even click. Went back under the car and noticed a black and white wire hanging down with the end of it looking like it broke off of somewhere. Any ideas where this black/white wire goes to? Also now I'm able to shift my gear shifter without having the keys in ignition and/or foot on the brake. Another thing is I was able to scan my car and it would read codes. Ever since that black/white wire is hanging my scanner won't read my vin/codes/any info on my car.
