When I was a kid my family had a theater group and they'd perform this show every holy week, my dad's best friend had a daughter who played Magdalene and sang this song, so I grew up loving this show so much, she died some years ago, yesterday I was traveling and I had Spotify playing in random and suddenly this song started to play, the feeling was indescribable, didn't know of this version ❤

By "original soundtrack", are you referring to the soundtrack from the 1973 movie with Ted Nealy and Carl Anderson? Or are you referring to the 1970 original concept album with Ian Gillan as Jesus and Murray Head as Judas, which was the first version of JCS, but was neither a movie soundtrack nor a Broadway cast recording, but a studio recorded album. I grew up in the 70s as a teenager listening to that album again and again, it remains not only far and away my favorite version of JCS, but one of my favorite albums of all time. I did really enjoy this 2018 TV broadcast, though. I love Sara's voice.

These are the lyrics, mostly for my own benefit, feel free to ignore them: I don't know how to love him What to do, how to move him I've been changed, yes, really changed In these past few days, when I've seen myself I seem like someone else I don't know how to take this I don't see why he moves me He's a man, he's just a man And I've had so many men before In very many ways He's just one more Should I bring him down? Should I scream and shout? Should I speak of love Let my feelings out? I never thought I'd come to this What's it all about? Don't you think it's rather funny I should be in this position? I'm the one who's always been So calm, so cool, no lover's fool Running every show He scares me so I never thought I'd come to this What's it all about? Yet, if he said he loved me I'd be lost, I'd be frightened I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope I'd turn my head, I'd back away I wouldn't want to know He scares me so I want him so I love him so

Great performance of Mary Magdalene being overcome by the transforming effect of Jesus “I've been changed, yes really changed.” But since it’s still just the first days of knowing him, she’s in the dark about who he is (“What's it all about?”), and that he isn’t there for a romantic relationship, but rather to help transform all people (who are willing to be open to his influence) and change the course of history. By the way, most scholars today (including non-Christian, agnostic scholars) agree that Mary Magdalene was not a former prostitute, and that the adultress woman named Mary in a different part of the Bible was a different Mary and not Mary Magdalene.

By the way, this entire version of JCS is great and is available on DVD and probably elsewhere too like a streaming service. I highly recommend watching it. John Legend and the rest of the cast do an amazing job. The audience energy and interaction is also tremendous. Also great set designs. I also love the closing scene with Jesus rising to heaven.

After many disappointing successors, finally a singer who seems to understand that Lloyd Webber's love songs always need emotional restrain, because they can quickly become kitsch. Elliman searched the ultimate emotional border where the ‘story told’ is not yet destroyed by effects of manipulation. And thereby she raised this song to the best performance ever. Bareilles has a fantastic voice, does not fall into the sentimental trap, but does not convince me. Besides that, the lyrics in the second part of the song ask for restrain in the orchestration, but here the band just continues its drum-driven richness, which deprives Bareilles to express fragility and layering. Elliman did have that possibility and transcends this song from a lovesong to a kind of universal shock to awakening; the actual premiss of this great, great song (and this rock opera as a whole)

This is beautiful but she is still not Yvonne Elliman

she's making some words in the song kinda 'poppy' and flat but it's not bad, I liked her more in The Waitress though.

Worthwhile effort, Sarah B...But anyone other than Yvonne falls WAAAAY short of the "Original" Rock Opera!

I only have one criticism and this is STRICTLY preference. She sang it well but she sang it different. I like someone who hits that first “I never thought I’d come to this” with a lot of force. Not necessarily volume but like hits it hard. Sara flows really smoothly, like Yvonne, which is good, but other than Yvonne, I prefer the force.

Beautiful voice, but the the massive drums in the middle were unnecessary in my opinion

Love, love, love the original film and Yvonne Elliman, but this is beautiful. Except for the overpowering percussion and annoyingly intrusive live audience.
