I’m an atheist and this is my favourite musical (and this my favourite song in it). I’d be fascinated to see the opinions of religious folks, but I kind of feel that this performance transcends religion.

@@eeemilu I’m not fervently religious but I’m Christian (started as a skeptic who grew in the faith). Anyone can appreciate that this epitomises a human struggle, one that emanates from the depth of one’s soul. Jesus was human and suffered as most of us suffer. He knew he was destined to suffer. Even as a non believer I could relate to this. One’s belief does not detract from his suffering. But it brings new meaning. The suffering is on behalf of mankind and done out of love so that we may forgive ourselves, and to give hope for the future. For a Christian, his death has more meaning and impact.

As an atheist, JCSS is in my regular lineup of things to sing. No shame in that, it's a fantastic fiction!

There will never be another Ted Neeley. EVER. He brings me to tears every time I hear him perform this.

OMG, he turned 80 on the 20. Sept. 2023, when people speak of Jesus, Ted Neeley is how I picture him. I was 11 when Superstar opened and I still watch it every year, sometime twice a year. Thank you Ted, Carl and Yvonne.

Ted refused to sing this song in rehearsals, not even dress rehearsals, so the first night of this run was the first time the cast and crew had heard him do it too. The last time before he sang it was at Carl Anderson’s funeral x

This performance moves me deeply, and seeing the young cast members watching offstage some in tears is truly beautiful.

I don’t think any performer could bring me to Gethsemane like this. I was there with him. What a moving video.

John Farnham last night in Sydney 1992 is an absolute masterpiece and is far and away the best live performance of this song ever. The G5 is impressive but that section is the only one that contains real passion in my opinion.

I saw and met Ted Neeley when I was 11. He asked me if I wanted to be an apostle when I grew up. I didn’t dare say no. No one has ever played Jesus like him nor never will.

Nearly 20 years ago it was supposed to be the farewell tour. Thanks God, Neely is still singing and he looks and sound awesome in 2024. He still nails it as has done for over half a century.

And then the other cast members had to go onstage in tears... Fantastic performance. Who am I kidding? I'm in tears, too!

I was 13 years old when the movie first came out and Ted Neely was my first crush. I had his picture on my wardrobe mirror. He moved me so much, I became a Christian. This performance is even better. What strength and conviction. What an amazing man.

I love that it was thier first time seeing Ted do this live. He refused to perform this song again for soo many years after his good friend Carl Anderson (Judas) passed away.

I have Loved this movie, album & dvd since 1973, always moved by his incredible voice, the lyrics are beautiful as well, amazed how Ted Neeley can actually scream and hold that high note. My favorite movie ever !

Even if he is older in this version, i keep watching this video, just cuz the passion is still there and is even higher than in the 1973. Ted is a master, He is something else.

He nails that high G pretty well for someone 63 years old. Still a lot of power in those vocal cords.

The "What YOU started" moment... with him suddenly looking up, in sync with the guitar chord... thrills down my spine. (5:28)

Wow. Just wow. I've heard more recent singers sing this song and liked and thought they were quite good. Until I listened to this version and this guy delivered every note and word with such skill and passion, it really made me feel this song in a way I'd never felt before. Truly wonderful.

yep he is OG. i definitely recommend watching his original 1973 performance of gethsemane in the JCS movie. it wasn’t just a “performance” but truly raw and real. it is one of the most heartbreaking and chilling performances of arguably anything ever

절규도 절균데 그다음 나오는 분노가 절망으로 바뀐 체념구간이 너무 농도 진하다... 성인인 예수만 생각했지 이유모를 사형선고에 분노하고 절망하는 인간예수 모습은 색다르군.

His co-stars freaking out when he hits those long high notes fills my heart with such joy. Tears and chills Ted, my god.

DAMN! Dude STILL had 35 years after the original. I always thought that if there really were a Jesus, he'd be more like the Ted Neeley rendition than ANY other version ever filmed.

Ted Neeley has been Jesus Christ for longer than Jesus Himself. He hasn't sung 'Gethsemane' in public since his friend Carl Anderson's funeral.

That powerful "Can YOU show me Now" right after the scream is incredible

I went to the play before I really knew Jesus. I know now and can let myself feel what He did for me/us by dying on the cross. What a merciful Lord we have!!! Totally undeserving!

the best ever. absolutely fantastic. the one and only "jesus" who not only hits the notes, but feels the emotion. wow.

Ikr? The major, minor chords flipping in and out to create the "I'm OK, I'm not OK" feeling and that total split second dissonant chord like some toddler just hit the keys. So quick as to be almost unheard but just enough to make it feel like his heart is crushing. Brilliant musicianship.

Oh shit, I got goosebumps all over my body when he shouted the WHY!? I didn't believe he was gonna do it, he is old, I assumed he was just gonna tone it down but no, what a performance to do at his age! I'm a singer and this is a very difficult piece and even if his voice is definitely tired, he nailed it, it was amazing.

I was 12 years old when I first saw this movie, yes 15 times. Like everyone, I know all the words. Ted came to Wilmington Delaware and I finally met him. He was absolutely wonderful. Told us about a football game. I love him and his family and cast💗💗

I saw Ted Neeley in JCS here in Halifax back in 1995. It was, and still is, the best live show I ever saw. The shape he was in, he looked like he was 21. I remember waiting near the stage long after everyone had left hoping to say hello, or something. Ted never came out but I was so happy I got to see the show live since I had seen the 1973 movie around 50 times up until that point. I doubt I'll ever get to meet Ted, but knowing I saw him live will allow me to die a happy man.

I'm a 60 year old man and tears are streaming down my face. Watched him sing this 50 years ago.

Love it so much, always brings me to tears. Met him and Carl Anderson backstage in Vancouver Queen E theatre. With my wife who was awaiting a double lung transplant. Ted was so special and caring for her and Carl too. Will never forget it, thank you Ted, you changed me, and made me understand that Jesus was a human like us all and had so many human feelings even knowing what he knew it was so hard.

I had the incredible good fortune to witness Mr. Neeley perform this in person. He rendered to tears then...and he still reduces me to a weeping fool now. Thank-you so much for presenting. Experience of a lifetime.

For me Ted Neeley will always be the Jesus for Jesus Christ Superstar. I remember when it first came out, I had listened to the concert was liked it okay, but wasn’t in love with it. So when the movie came out, I wasn’t interested. However, I had an out-of-town guest who wanted to see it. So we went. Oddly, she didn’t like it much, but I loved it. I’ll bet I saw it a dozen times while it was in the theatre, usually in the early afternoon where I might be the only person there. It was Ted in that particular scene that kept bringing me back. I am not particularly religious, but Gethsemane was so powerful, I was drawn to it over and over. Ted was and is (even with some vocal issues) magnificent.

The total awe, love and admiration from Ted's co cast in the wings states volumes. These people are all vying and competing amongst themselves yet MUST acknowledge this man's awesome talent. Amazing! Not bad for a boy from Texas! I love Ted Neeley!

Ted is an awesome talent. Very powerful acting..quite.a bit of overacting I think. Don't believe Jesus would have yelled so hard and loud. Ted was great in the original role and not many have come close to that performance. But for his age and for what this role meant to him this was amazing.

Joan Bowie Yep, definitely some overacting, I agree. More acting than real feelings if You see my point. I did the part of Pilate in Finland many years ago and I love the musical, and Gillan is my favorite. Cant help.

I cry every time I listen to this performance, with zero shame.

I had the privilege to see Jesus Christ superstar in the early 90s in Toronto. Ted Neely was Jesus and Dennis de Young from Styx was Pilate. To this day it was the best stage performance iv ever seen.

Sir Ted Neeley, i have no words...this song must be in Space so UFO's can hear how good you can sing, never heard something like this, it's inzane. Thank you that you are real, faaaaaar from the slingers of today...i love you man! Greetz from a Dutchman!

I heard the Spanish version with Camilo Sesto when I was about 12 or 13.... i am now 56 and every year, for good friday, I have made it a ritual to listen to he entire show... I go see it every chance I get and I did have the opportunity to see Ted Neely with Dennis DeYoung at Madison Square Garden back in the 90's.... I am not very religious but the music just makes my day...thanks you for sharing this video!!!

Ted Neely was born for this role! Each time I listen to him, I sing with him and I cry and I feel pain and despair and sacrifice myself until I change my mind. BRAVO, TED !!!

Wow, that's really wonderfull and great!!! I wishes Thatcher I hope to meet Ted also in real life. The chances therefore .......I don't know. I guess I'm to late. And .... afijn. Nu even door in mijn eigen moedertaal. Ik volgde TED al jaren. Maar in de bijstand. Hij was ij Nederland.... Ik kon niet gaan. Nu, net als ik, hij iets meer en raakt nog steeds die hoge noten, ongelooflijk, nog meer onder de indruk, ook het gevoel van inlevingsvermogen voel ik nog steeds!!!!!. Google maar het recente wat geplaatst is, alhoewel deze opname mij het meest blijft raken. Ik hoop deze Ted toch ooit in real life somehow mee te maken. Empathie ❤

@@Anna63Bel he is a great guy! He told Nw his story while filming the movie in Israel. They had to stop several times because of tourist. Jesus Christ Super Star is my favorite broadway musica and there will be no one like him.

저도 스티브 보고 여기로 왔는데 눈물이 나네요....

The maturity in his voice makes this performance even more powerful than the original for me. Let's not forget that Jesus at 30-odd would have been considered well into middle-age back in 30CE!

He wouldn't average life span was low because od infant mortality, once you lived passt first five years you had reasonable chances to live to old age. For comparison, average life expectancy during industrial revolution was 15 years. Sorry, I couldn't resist 😁

The original version always moved me. But this has left me speechless. I never thought that a second version of the same artist could reach these levels. It has managed to move me to the depths of my soul. I filled my eyes with tears.

@@bradhuskers I think a lot of it was that Ian was just singing. He wasn't trying to act it ( except for the natural emotion he puts into the song) or worry about his blocking, camera angles etc ( in the movie but here also). And that high note sounds like a natural move within Ian"s voice rather than a note he is reaching for apart from the rest of the song. That shows even more when you watch the "Who sang the high note best in Gesthemene" video. Ian just blows them all away.

I have no words. How incredible is this?? No one compares to Ted Neeley, truly THE Superstar JC.

This is without a doubt, the greatest performance of this song ever. It never fails to bring me to tears.

i saw the film , and ted Neeley at the time sems perfectly mature, perfectly in the skin of Jesus. No is a memory, another time, even the people are other today, only care about material values. nothing is the same, everything change, nothing come back. Personnaly I prefer to remenber the genuine thing. sorry

Ted Neeley makes a Fantastic performance in the original movie Jesus Christ Superstar (1970,s), and now, this video, many years later, even More fantastic performance by Ted Neeley! My heart goes in to thousend pieces. So beautiful it made me cry
