I am a Warrant officer in the SAPS. 31 years service. 24 years as a Warrant. My take home pay is R22000. My medical aid contribution for my son and I is R2075.00.

Mmmh I got a job offer at SAPS for Warrant Officer this year and turned it down, but I see the salary gap compere to where I work is not as big as I thought. But I don't regret my decision. There one I get is a bit better, thank you for sharing Boni.

@AndrewSmith-sy7ws to add there is a warrant officer that applied externally for the position and used his Chemistry degree , however, he was already working as a.constable for a few years but used the degree to be in forensics. I had to double-check cos I know that you can't just be a warrant officer from the streets.🤣

SAPS does not offer higher rank jobs to community members without first starting as a trainee for 1 year at the college and then graduating as a constable. All higher ranking officers started at the bottom as a constable after 2 years of training, nobody just jumps straight into a higher rank at SAPS without existing police experience. I'm a Sargent in the SAPS and it took me 7 years to get here. SO STOP LYING!!!.... you are lying to us unprovoked. The only people who get recruited back into SAPS with their original high rank such as Sargent, Warrant and Captains are people who resigned from SAPS a few years ago and get offered their jobs back. And more proof that you are lying is that the SAPS goes through a very strict recruitment process and it gets advertised in news papers, they won't just offer you a warrant officer job just like that.

@@liferesetwithboni exactly what I was thinking 😂😂😂 The SAPS won't just offer someone from the streets a Warrant officer position...they are extremely strict... you would need a degree in Forensics or Accounting or something. But then that just places you in a Lab all day or in the finance department which realistically does not make you a police officer it just makes you an accountant working for the SAPS or a forensic anthropologist working in the Lab at the SAPS they don't even get issued firearms because there's no danger there.

I agree they are very low, besides grade 12 consider the work load the guys are doing.Jack of all trades not forgetting danger they face on a daily basis.I say the lower ranks should earn more cos they do more than the higher ranks.

Very good point. Lets consider the millitary. A full colonel, provided he did the staff officer course (if it still even exists) is n very important dynamic rank. They are. usually battalion commanders who must plan and execute attacks. These are the most senior officers physically on the battle field. Depending on which branch if the millitary a battalion can be close to 3000 to 5000 soldiers plus armour, artillery, airforce support, etc. What do they get paid? Are they even trained? Was this fiasco wuth the special forces in Mozambique an eye opener. One vehicle!!! Cant extract them - not enough aircraft and who planned that operation? Next step is into the general staff who support the chief of the army. It is a difficult demanding job. Does it make sense to appoint a colonel as station commander with less than a 1000 officers, no vehicles because it is not maintained and repaired. It breaks my heart but this disparity will be the end of the little bit of security forces we gave left including metro. Elections are coming up - if the EFF and other factions want to play games they will at will.

Ive been in the police for 23 years its unfair to members within the police to be so long in the service and still be a warrent wherehy others is less and already a Col after just 7 years. But thats the police for you

That’s a Full Colonels starting salary. Possibly the person got promoted into that Colonel’s rank in 2022/3.

Thank you it is very interesting. But my question is this ~ a caucasian friend of mine has now been a warrant officer for 20 years ~ not a palookka either ~ for one a forensic detective. An african friend of his who started as a WO at the same time is now +- Colonel level. African constables who joined after him are officers. So what will he be paid as a 20 year WO compared to the Colonel. No matter how diligent he works there is no improvement in his standard of living ~ in fact it gets worse. I know it is politics but for the sake of interest take a base year of 20 years ago and project to date and lets see the impact please. The second thing I disagree with ~ why should Metro Police earn more when the dangerous work is back with the SAPS. When Metro was founded theybwere suppose to replace the traffic department and do actual police work. Now I see nothing except an occasional roadblock writingba fine or two. Thanks ne.

It's similar to JMPD as far as I know. Traffic cop grades apply.

But he didn't jump ranks, from the rank of Constable next rank is Warrant Officer. What's disturbing though is that with that kind of qualification, one is earning such paltry figures.

The warrant officer is/was not wrong. I believe the posts were advertised as External posts to allow members of the public to apply, but does not restrict SAPS personnel from applying. If it was internal then that would have been advertised as Post Promotions, the constable would not have qualified for the Warrant officer's post as they are not allowed to skip a rank of which the next rank is of a Sergeant. Externally you can apply for any rank that is advertised.
