To clarify, South Korea does provide payslips, although they are not given monthly. Instead, there is a dedicated website where you can access payslips for all your previous work periods. However, it's not common for people to track them regularly. In South Korea, South Africans are exempt from paying taxes for the first two years of living there. Many individuals come to Korea for two years, earn money, and then leave. Alternatively, you can choose to stay longer, as I have for five years, and I have only started paying taxes in the last three years, which amount to R1,250 per month. I believe this is reasonable. Moreover, after five years, our salaries do increase annually, and there are bonuses as well. It's not necessary to teach at just one school either. Currently, I teach at three schools, with varying weekly schedules. On top of these benefits, South Korea covers 50% of our medical aid costs and offers severance pay. Despite having no teaching experience in South Africa, I earn significantly more than a woman who has been working there for 30 years, and the cost of living in Korea is relatively inexpensive. In fact, I am able to save a substantial amount each month, sending home 1.5 million Korean won, which translates to R21,000, and comfortably living on the remainder of my salary. Hence, I still believe that South Korea offers favorable conditions. While I don't intend to make comparisons, I hope this clarifies any confusion. For more detailed information, feel free to visit my channel.

To clarify further, South Korea offers even more benefits. They cover the cost of your flights, which means you don’t have to worry about purchasing air tickets when coming to or leaving the country. Additionally, as an English teacher in South Korea, you are provided with accommodation, and the apartments are fully furnished. This means you don’t have to worry about finding and paying for rent or buying furniture. Moreover, the transportation system is well-supported, and teachers receive transport allowances to cover their travel expenses to and from school. These additional perks contribute to making the teaching experience in South Korea more convenient and financially advantageous.

This is my 8th year in Korea and having taught in public schools, private public schools and academies, contracts differ vastly for everyone. Smaller cities or the country side tend to be cheaper than the bigger cities, but cost of living is generally high. The downside to esl teaching in Korea is that they’ve increased their requirements while cutting down on perks and salaries. Salaries have been stagnant for over 10 years now. Many people here work for 2 or 3 years then move to China or UAE (if they’re qualified teachers). Side note: annual increases are also not guaranteed, most people don’t get them. Really depends on your school/contract.

Boney, in South Africa you should not forget that they have pension whereby the employer matches what the teacher contribute. Also teachers get 67% subsidy on medical aid i they are with gems, meaning they pay only one third. While it may seemlike the foreign based teachers are earning more, the south african teachers are having many benefits. If you can do QUALITATIVE comparison you may find the real difference. Salary only comparisons may not give the true picture. I CHALLENGE YOU to look deeper.

Important point. I retired as Deputy Chief Education Specialist ( office based) with 34 years experience in 2016. I receive a comfortable pension with above inflation increments annually. My wife retired as a school based Head of Department for humanities with 40 years experience under her belt in 2020. Guess what. Her initial pension was roughly equivalent to her last salary as a teacher ( minus annual bonus) AND she also gets an annual increment at or above inflation rate. Can you really ask for more as a pensioner?

But the benefits from abroad also have allowances. Their pension for example in China, after 12 months its R1000000. But they can only cash it out after 10 years, which goes up as their income also increases. So the two are incomparable.

Hey Bonnie, i like your program, its very interesting and informative. It blows my mind why the bonus is paid out with the salary. Obviously the tax deduction will be higher. Why not give the case for the unions to insist that the pay out on bonus must be made separately. Definitely they will see the difference that a bonus is been earned. By paying out the salary with the bonus, makes the gross earning following into a higher tax bracket.

These teachers salaries are confusing me, so it doesn’t matter if have 8 years or 2 months experience, your take home will still land at R20-R22k Someone please explain

Beautiful but the downside is they dont have provident fund plus no UIF if you loose your job then you dont get same benefits as a SA teacher would … if you die your family wont get those long life benefits so sometimes we should look at the long term .. i would still choose to teach in SA
