Similar to the lines of master roshi, jiraya etc. Him being a simp who never hurts any woman even if they are about to kill him is because of his tragic backstory. The rest is all the same in both. He is a generous kind hearted guy who always plays the big brother role to the crewmates especially chopper.

In the Baratie arc of the manga, we saw a flashback where Sanji started smoking at a young age because he thought Zeff would start seeing him as a man and no longer treat him like a boy.

I love this version of Sanji. He quickly became my favourite in the anime because of his kindness to Ghin, but I love how charming this Sanji is. How he is so badass but also how his toned down flirting is shown in a more charming light than a goofy or perverted light. And how Taz’s eyes sparkle as Sanji talks about the All Blue, it just feels so genuine. Sanji and Luffy have always felt like mirrors to each other in a way, so having Sanji give Luffy the “being a captain means making tough decisions” talk felt fitting while Zoro was out of commission. Especially since that does become a dynamic after Sanji joins the crew (if Zoro’s not there, he and Nami are basically Luffy’s seconds) so to see it happen even before he does join in this version, it’s a good way to show how easily they can fall into Sanji being a big brother to Luffy and helping give him advice when Zoro’s not around. Taz himself seems to be a really great guy. Cooking off camera for everyone and not just to practice for the cooking scenes, staying with Inaki in the water so he didn’t have to be alone.

True! I hated the anime sanji because of how weird and how much of a simp he is, but this version of sanji is like a calmer and less childish and likes girl version of luffy, like there are alot of similarities between the two of them and i think the live action just puts more into that, and tbh the only thing keeping sanji from becoming my number 1 favorite is his simping, but after this version it was clear... Sanji staying in the same place, I'm sorry but i can't put him above our boy and no diffing ussop and luffy, but i like this sanji cause he's very relatable to me Knows martial arts? I'm currently learning arnis and taekwondo. Can cook? I can cook alot of dishes from my home country. Likes girls? Definitely, buuuut i also like a few guys 😅 only thing i don't have is a zeff 😢 (Spoilers from now of the anime, so don't scroll mode) Has a biological dad who suck? LITERALLY ME!!!!!!

I find Sanji a microcosm about how you adapt something as cartoony as One Piece to live action. His flirtatious stuff in the manga preposterous hyperbole, which IRL would be insufferable or alienating, but is part of that medium's means of showing how passionate he is about women. Instead the performance brings it to a more charming level - he'll use corny one-liners on women, and while it's not something everyone welcomes or is receptive to, the effect feels more like someone making a playful joke that states his amorous intent while being respectful. The lines are delivered with a level sincerity that the actor can work leverage well with the material to convey the intent of the characterization in context of the story, but more sutiably for the medium.

I think that's why OPLA was so successful- they brought the essence of the anime- not the anime itself to the screen. Anime characters are always exaggerating and while it looks funny in 2D, it becomes cringe when turned in 3D. And that's why Sanji, a pervert portrayed in the anime, has become a wholesome character in the Live Action. I don't think there's anything wrong with it- characters portraying in new light rather bring new perspectives to the story, as long as the story is kept intact. Also, loved your comment! Very well thought out and one of the best I've got!

Sanji is the only character the live action does better than the manga. I say this as a straight guy, but the flirtatious but respectful charm is a lot more fitting to his character than nosebleeds and over the top pervi-ness (idk if that's even a word lol)

So I'm currently binging the anime for the first time while I sit and wait (im)patiently for season two lol and this got recommended to me two days ago when I got to Sanji's introduction in the show. I am really glad that the live action made the changes to him that they did because trying to portray Anime Saji's simp energy would have been heeeellllla awkward and weird. But I like that they kept some shades of it still, like the whole "ShE iS a MyStErY-" thing lol but it is a lot more palatable.

@@geminithetwins lmao it's a LOT to take in, I getcha. I'm not that far in but it's super charming! Since it's an anime, and *is* pretty over-acted but because that's an integral part of the genre, it's nothing out of the ordinary. The bulk of or is pretty much the same but there's quite a few differences. A big one was how the fight with Kuro went a lot more differently, the scene with the Barratie was different with who it involved, but it's a lot of fun. It really reinforces the casting for the LA series too. It's really nice seeing a faithful and loving adaptation for a change instead of things like LA Cowboy Bebop, LA Last Airbender, Amazon's Fallout (apparently 😬). If you have Netflix, you should definitely think about checking it out!

I haven't watched the anime but based on people's opinion, I think you are right. Taz made his version of Sanji better ✨

I hated the anime sanji because of how weird and how much of a simp he is, but this version of sanji is like a calmer and less childish and likes girl version of luffy, like there are alot of similarities between the two of them and i think the live action just puts more into that, and tbh the only thing keeping sanji from becoming my number 1 favorite is his simping, but after this version it was clear... Sanji staying in the same place, I'm sorry but i can't put him above our boy and no diffing ussop and luffy, but i like this sanji cause he's very relatable to me Knows martial arts? I'm currently learning arnis and taekwondo. Can cook? I can cook alot of dishes from my home country. Likes girls? Definitely, buuuut i also like a few guys 😅 only thing i don't have is a zeff 😢 (Spoilers from now of the anime, so don't scroll mode) Has a biological dad who suck? LITERALLY ME!!!!!!

I think it's the same as in the manga , bc even tho he does have rizz in here, it's only accepted by the audience and he still ends up getting curved by the female characters, they are all like 'what a flirt 🙄' Would be fun if as in the manga, the only time he does get interest from the ladies is when he is acting normally, but it just goes over his head XD

Yep they made Zoro too emo. He was serious, but he had his own charm of being comical and a total deadpan snarker. Especially his defeat in Hands of mihawk humbles him down.
