Welcome to our KZread channel dedicated to nature. Today we will talk about one of the most iconic and fascinating dog breeds in the world: the Saint Bernard.
It is known around the globe for its role as a rescue dog in the high mountains. But beyond its heroic work, this breed has many other interesting characteristics to discover.
Let's start with the origins of this fascinating breed. Already in the times of the ancient Romans, there were traces of the Saint Bernard's predecessors. These dogs were thought to be similar to the Alpine Mastiff and helped the Roman legions guard important communication routes.
Over the centuries, the Saint Bernard spread throughout all the cantons of Switzerland, the country of origin of this breed. It was also used by the inhabitants of a hospice located at the top of the Great Saint Bernard Pass, almost 2500 meters above sea level, to protect themselves from brigands. This is where its name comes from.
But the most famous role of the Saint Bernard is undoubtedly that of a mountain rescue dog. Numerous accounts tell of human lives saved thanks to these brave dogs. Even during the Napoleonic era, the Saint Bernards made a name for themselves throughout Europe with rescues performed among the army ranks.
Speaking of physical appearance, the Saint Bernard is a large breed and has an imposing stature. It reaches a height of one meter at the withers and can weigh up to 100 kilograms. Despite its size, this dog moves with grace and lightness when well-trained.
It has a thick and shiny coat, which can be either short or long-haired. The base color is white, especially on areas of the chest, muzzle, tip of the tail, and legs. The rest of the coat has spots that vary from brown to red.
But it's not just its appearance that is captivating, the Saint Bernard is also known for its sweet and generous nature. It is a dog very attached to its owner and ready to sacrifice itself to save a person in danger. It is protective, playful, and loves company, especially that of children.
However, due to its imposing size, it requires enough space to move around. Living in an apartment could be a sacrifice for this dog, so it is important to carefully evaluate the environment in which it will live.
If you are interested in having a Saint Bernard, it is advisable to turn to a certified and titled breeder. Saint Bernard puppies can have a price ranging from 1,700 to 2,000 euros, depending on the bloodline and conformity to breed standards.
Always remember to check the origin of the puppies and to request all the necessary health certificates. A Saint Bernard puppy is a significant commitment and requires adequate care to ensure its health and well-being.

Però deve vivere in alta montagna. In mezzo al freddo, neve e ghiaccio. Non è un cane d' appartamento, città, pianura e campagna. Sono cani che devono vivere all' aria fredda.
