San'aa Mushaf: Shiites & Sunnis Have The Same Quran | Dr. Shabir Ally

Dr. Shabir Ally joins Dr. Safiyyah Ally to discuss an old manuscript of the Quran, often called the Sanaa Mushaf, which contains 86% of the Quran and is very close to the #Quran we read today worldwide. Dr. Shabir explains how this mushaf is differentiated from the Sanaa manuscripts and discusses the minor variations from the official Uthmanic version of the Quran. The mushaf is often attributed to Ali bin Abi Talib (though not actually written by him). Ali was respected by both #Sunnis and #Shiites and was the first of the great Shiite imams. So the discovery of the Sanaa mushaf shows us that even in the earliest years of #Islam, Sunni and Shiite Muslims have always shared the same Quran despite the differences that arose between them.

Thank you Dr. Shabir for discussing the history of the Quran. However, I still don't understand part of its history. Perhaps someone can help me? We are taught that Allah's divine message captured in the Quran is pure, clear and unaltered. That it has not, and must never, be changed or modified in any way. Yet, history and Islamic tradition also teach us that we no longer have the original message as revealed to Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. The original ṣuḥufin were destroyed on purpose under the orders of Caliph Uthmān with the permission of either Hafsa's brother or Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. Ḥafṣah’s codex was the original source from which we get the Uthmān’s codex, (our present day Quran). Therefore, 'it' must, of course have been, the purest, most trustworthy and unadulterated version of Allah's message. Yet this original was deliberately destroyed! Why? How could this authoritative, articulate, original be in any way perceived as a threat worthy of being burnt? How could this foundational Mus'haf lead truth seekers astray? The only logical reason is that it conflicted with Uthmān’s final compiled codex. His revised, and later updated version, (rasm script to the scripta plena), is not -and can never logically be- the original message that was dictated verbatim to Muhammad because it has been undeniably filtered over 350 years by many men; some clearly with their own agenda's. This is of course one of the reason for the original Sunni-Shia conflict. All the best

    1. How the author/analysis concluded it was attributed to Ali (bias for Shia?) Is it only a conjecture or an assumption based on consequential evidence? 2. Muhammad (pbuh) was the one who received the Quran, and he mentored his close companions to write it down. The Prophet had scribes of the text, which included Zaid Ibn Thabit, which was widely known to be his personal scribe of Quran. Only his close companions and personal scribe can authenticate the Quran that was given to the Prophet. 3. Different spellings, vocalisation or ways of reading could make things confusing, so the final committee, which was made of certified members of the Prophet have decided that a unified codex ie Uthmani codex to prevent confusion 4.The final committee which formulated the Uthmani codex included Zaid Ibn Thabit, and this is an extremely important point for authenticity, as he was the personal scribe to the Prophet 5. The final committee which formulated the Uthmani codex instructed/decided to burn other copies of Quran as those those were not written by the endorsed companions, nor were they endorsed by the final committee, thus those copies are not the actual Quran known by the certified members of the committee and likely contain error/variations written by non-authenticated or unknown scribe(s). 6. Some critics accused that the burning of Quran has something to do with hiding evidence. But burning of Quran is done even today, when certain Muslim authority discovered misprinted version of Quran (sometimes mass printing error happens). Such an authority has the power to burn those erroneous copies, because they are faulty version of Quran. The final committee of the Uthamani codex has the authority to dispose Quran written by non-authenticated persons that are not the close companions of Muhammad (pbuh) 7. Although we can study the Sanaa text for comparative purpose, it can safely be concluded that the text from Sanaa mosque was not endorsed by the certified members of the Prophet, and this must be highlighted. The final committee (with had the rightful authority to certify the Quran) instructed that other copies that are not endorsed by them are not to be accepted and are to be disposed off/destroyed.

A Person who have understood whole Quran knows well that Quran have not just blasted Tafarqa in one Ummah but Quran has also said, Firqa/Tafarqa spreaders are Khaarjite who take exit from Islam by making Sects/Tafarqa 6:159. Quran further tells in 3:105 that Hell is waiting Sect followers. Therefore, if we understand Quran precisely and honestly, Sunni Shia and all other sects are not Muslims. They became out of Islam by making Sects. Historically, Roots of Sunni sect and Shia sect are in Judaism and Zoroastrianism because their almost all Non-Quranic Books which they follow more than Quran are full of reports which were imported from Talmud and books of Zoroastrians. Quran has used word La-Tafaraqu in 3:103, and then have said, Hold Fast Rope of Allah. Arabic word Tafaraq has broad meanings which mean ANY KIND of Firqa/Division/Split/Grouping. But many sect followers hide their these Divisions under different words/names like "School of thought", but fact is: That so called School of Thoughts have also created Split and Grouping in One Ummah. If a Donkey hides itself with Skin of a Lion, he will still be called a Donkey. For example: Hope Dr Shabbir Aly knows about it, that all the four, Hanafi, Malaki, Shafi'i and Hanbli lift their index finger in Tahshahhud in different ways, they dance the finger in different ways. Did Quran/prophet tell them to do so? From Adam to last Prophet Mohammad PBUH, God has named us only Muslim in 22:78. So it is Great to be Muslim only without any sect.

Factszz Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever innovates into this matter of ours that which does not belong to it, it will be rejected.” - Sahih al-Bukhari 2550. After Muhammad died, the people who lived with him and knew his religion best immediately fell into war with each other. Fatima, Muhammad’s favorite daughter survived the early years among the unbelievers at Mecca safe and sound, yet died of stress from the persecution of fellow Muslims six months after her father died. She even miscarried Muhammad’s grandchild after having her ribs broken by the man who became the second Caliph. It was this same Caliph, Umar who ordered the death of the first convert to islam at Medina, an elderly leader who became a close companion to Muhammad and proved his worth in battle. Sa’d ibn Ubadah was killed after a failed bid to be Caliph. Fatima’s husband Ali, who was the second convert to islam and was raised like a son to Muhammad, fought a civil war against an army raised by Aisha Muhammad’s favorite wife and one whom he had was a “perfect woman.” 10,000 Muslims were killed in a single internal battle waged less than 25 years after Muhammad’s death. Three of the first four muslim rulers (Caliphs) were murdered and all of them among Muhammad’s closest companions. The fourth Caliph (Ali) was stabbed to death after a bitter dispute with the fifth. The fifth Caliph went on to poison one of Muhammad’s two favorite grandsons. The other grandson was later beheaded by the sixth Caliph. Within 50 short years of Muhammad’s death, even the Kaaba which had stood for centuries under pagan religion, lay in ruins from internal Muslim war. We must also consider how plausible it is that the early Muslim community reassigned its origins to a different city than that of its actual birthplace. Most revisionists allege that Muslims made the change during islam’s classical period for political reasons. Yet how believable is it that islam originated not in Mecca but in Petra or somewhere else in Nabatea. And that just the fate of those within the house of islam who amongst the peoples who had guaranteed by Muhammad to enter Paradise. Today, Muslims continued their Jihad against the unbelievers for 1400 years. None of other religions in this world are at war with each other except islam that so called the religion of peace!

There are enough verses that say “I have my religion you have your religion”. All these claims have been debunked long time ago yet I see people making claims against the Quran. Criticize the Ahadith, I don’t care, because they were written by enemies of Islam, but these claims against the Quran have never worked.

Christians have the same problem, to a more severe extent. Surely an all-powerful god could inspire a book that isn't so easily interpreted in more than one way. In a worldview where god knows everything, he would have known that these multiple interpretations would cause drama. it seems like he did this on purpose. Or, a more likely scenario: the book isn't inspired by an all-powerful god, but by the men that wrote it.

You sound like you did not watch the video my friend. Shabir basically says the manuscript was written up to a 100 years after the Original Quran was produced and it is almost identical except some changes in linguistic style. The Quran has stood the test of time to be scientifically, historically, ethically and logically correct. Do not play yourself, the copies of the bible everyone reads today is a compilation of different books which were compiled nearly 600 years after the supposedly 'death' of jesus, this same bible has over a 1000 errors. Muslims believe that the original books that inspired the bible were divine however it has been corrupted overtime, hence why there are so many errors (zakir did a video on this). The Quran has not one error.

@@hassanayo6368 Please do not fall into the trap of exaggeration. It's unhelpful. If you don't know something for sure, it's perfectly ok to say, I don't know, or i'll get back to you. I say this because the bible was not compiled 600 years after the supposed 'death' of Jesus. Specifically, the Catholic canon was set at the Council of Rome (382), if that is what you were referring to? But remember, a written compilation of Allah's revelation was never commanded. Neither Abraham, Moses nor any of the pre Muhammad prophets were told by Allah "this will be part of the finalized canon (compilation)". The same goes for the Injil. Allah did not dictate what books would form the true Injil. Lastly, there is no record that I am aware where Muhammad, (peace be upon him), is commanded to ensure that what he recited was written down. In fact, it is very clear that much was not written down at all. The emphasis only changed much later, when so many warriors were lost in war. This clearly shows that for 2000 years the lack of a canon, (compilation of Allah's words), was not a big issue for our creator. As to your comment that 'The Quran has not one error'. It depends on how you define 'an error'. The Sana'a manuscript contain 5000+ deviations from the Uthman codex, (which is the foundation of our present day Quran). Most Muslims would not consider these as errors. There are many occasions is the Quran where Allah gives a command, then in a later passage overrides this command. This would also not be considered an error. The Quran contains many Spelling, syntax and grammar 'deviations', that hinder the clarity of the message. Most believers brush these aside. There are also scientific and historical inaccuracies. Would these be considered errors? My purpose here is to show hubris is very unhelpful, and daring to be honest is incredibly difficult. God knows the truth and does not need man's help to defend Him. The truth sets us free. I wish you well

Hi Some Random, Your argument is built on a couple of false premises:- - everyone is always honest - everyone is able to understand everything all the time Are you always honest? Are there things you can't get your head around? I don't think it presumptuous to conclude we all struggle with both. The question is why, and how could an all-powerful God deal with these fairly. The scriptures make clear that God spoke clearly to the first man, but he was disobedient. They describe a world full of purpose and free from decay or evil. But mankind desired the knowledge of evil. Mankind still does. Evil corrupts. Our world is now broken and so are we. Every action has its consequence. But there is hope. Despite our continued selfish, arrogant and destructive behaviour, God in His loving mercy did not abandon us. On the contrary, He anticipated this and embedded His plan of redemption right from the beginning. The scriptures are His strategic, progressive revelation of His plan of redemption. We read how God originally walked amongst mankind, but because of the continued rebellion, God gradually gives such people over to the futility of their foolishness. God requires each of us personally to be honest and have some humility. The truth is, we sometimes mean well, but we are trapped in our corruption. No one is good enough. God is holy and can not allow wilful dishonesty to go uncorrected. No loving father would. Justice must be done because God is just. We desperately need His forgiveness. And it is available. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. There is more to it of course but, I'll leave it at that for now. I wish you all the best. Take care.

But that is clearly impossible, because there are obviously different levels of ability. Both Einstein's and the child's view of the world can both be true without them being identical.
