Samyang 85mm f/1.4 IF UMC lens review with samples (full-frame and APS-C)

Today I'm taking a look at Samyang's very popular 85mm f/1.4 lens - it's got a reputation for being excellent value for money, if you're ready to try manual focus.

Nice review, as always!!! I've had this lens for around 3 months on 60d, and i'm really happy with it. I use magic lantern's focus peaking and magic zoom to manual focus, and they're really2x helpful to nail the focus.

  • @V0idFace

    @V0idFace

    7 жыл бұрын

Prodan Giovani It will be great for portrait photography, though focusing on the tiny viewfinder of the D3300 will be difficult. With my D7100, it has a virtual rangefinder which tells me when the spot I'm focusing on is in focus. It might be useable on the D3300, but it won't be easy.

I got this lens because I was on a budget and wanted a 1.4. I love it to death, almost entirely due to its absolutely gorgeous rendering and bokeh. There are certainly sharper alternatives out there, but as long as it isn't obviously soft at normal magnification levels, I really don't give a shit. I got a couple of more expensive lenses when I upgraded to full frame and expected this one to be retired, but I still find myself using it most of the time...This lens really taught me not to obsess about 'lab' tests - the overall look of the image is far more important, as long as there aren't any serious problems. If I could choose one thing to improve, it would be its tendency to flare. Luckily that's not an issue for the vast majority of shots. I cannot recommend this lens highly enough.

On APS-C, it's the equivalent of a 127.5 lens - admittedly, a focal length never made (TMK) for 35mm cameras, but 127's were used for120 [6x7, 6x9] , 3.25x4.25 and 4x5 sheet film sizes - (respectively, a "long focus", a normal, and a wide angle...) 135mm is (perhaps...) the closest lens made in a "prime" lens.

On my A6000 (APS-C sensor) I've been using the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and considering its a very similar price its a good alternative with a shorter focal length but you get to keep that fast aperture. Its also really well made and has AF.

My experience (mainly using on a video camera) is that this lens has great optics and is lovely for portrait shots... but it's quite poorly made mechanically. I've had to return two within warranty as the focus ring became very noisy and graunchy on both. My supplier told me that it's a very common complaint and only affects the 85mm, not other Samyangs. It's due to poor plastics used internally. Somehow I don't think we'll be using these lenses in 40 or 50 years time the way you can with old Canon, Rokkor and Nikkor glass.

I notice there aren't any electric connections on the Mount and was very curious as to whether or not that would affect this particular feature. I'm looking to get the 35mm and 85mm lenses in this series as these lenses seems wonderfully sharp even though their price is so low.

Hi Chris, you mentioned that a wide aperture lens will produce purple fringing on APS-C sensors. Why is that?

Hi, I know that this is 4 years late but I have a bit of an answer for you. Many APS-C sensors have higher pixel densities than their full-frame counterparts, with the exception of some incredibly high resolution modern full-frame cameras like the Sony A7R IV. This means that parts of light that may have resolved to the same pixel on the full-frame are split between pixels on the APS-C which can cause issues with sharpness and fringing, especially if the lens can't resolve all wavelengths of light to the same exact place on the sensor. This is a large part of why modern lenses keep getting sharper and sharper and why new lenses keep being necessitated because as our camera sensors keep getting more and more megapixels, they need sharper lenses to increase the number of perceived megapixels. It's no good if your lens will take one distinct point in your focal plane and spread it across 2.5 pixels on your sensor.

Quick question: for someone who has both DX and FX Nikon bodies, how does the Samyang 85mm f1.4's performance on DX compare to their 135mm f2 on FX? Would be nice if it's close enough to cover the job of both by just moving it between the DX and FX bodies!

Your excellent review not withstanding, I was pleasantly surprised to see the windows have been painted. Looks like some much needed glazing has been done as well. I miss the old building, was sad when you went to the charts😢

Hi Christopher - Does the aperture stay open when composing - and then close to the set aperture when the shutter is released? I would use this on a Fuji EX-3. Great review (as usual).

I was always confused with full frame lenses released on APS-C from manufacturer. Aren't they adding extra glass to make it an 85mm lens to APS-C format or they just add a tube for APS-C fit?

hey christopher,im thinking to buy this lens for portrait photography with my d7100...My question is: I read that you can set the aperture from the camera,is that true? And the more importan question is that some people they say that this lens with the red ring actually talks to the camera for accurate focus giving you the blink inside the viewfinder,Do you have any of these infos? You will really help me to buy that

Thanks for the great video i want to get one for my NX500 i found 2 versions that works for NX mount one in red colour and the other one in Gold colour i am very confused which one i should get? both looks same in everything and even the brand name is the same (Rokinon) also my 2nd question is it will be easy to use the screen on the NX500 to get the focus perfect with this camera? i know its a manual but i don't have view finder on the NX500 so i am a bit worried to be difficult to get the focus perfect. thanks again!

I have no idea about your NX500 camera although I imagine that using your screen for focus should be fine. The red / gold thing is just cosmetic, there won't be a real difference

i own the 14mm and 85mm samyang Nikon ones both mine are red ED AS I F UMC witch means they both have a on screen dot that shows you if your in focus or not and you can set the f stop in camera so the only manual thing is the focus i must say the build on the two lens blow away the Nikon lens build and the sharpness also blows away my Nikon they are now my goto lens they are just awesome i would also like to recommend them.

+Deon Hamilton im still scared of getting this one over 85 1.8d. right now its cheaper and obviously wider aperture yet the manual focusing may ruin my life xD how hard is it to operate manually if u are shooting street fashion or something like that with intense movement on the location and such?
