    Part of my choice in lens depends on if I'm traveling or staying at home. Staying at home, I'd take the larger Sony lens. If I were traveling, then the Samyang would be of interest to me. Also, if the photos that I'm taking are a replacement for a cellphone as a travel camera then the Samyang might work well. But if I'm going something place with the intent of taking photos, then I'd go with the Sony.

    I actually enjoy my Samyang, that being said I would change it with a Sony 24 F1.8 (when/if it comes out) or the Tamron 17-28. Anyway for what I am using it for, wedding photography especially on the dancefloor with 4 strobes and at f4 it does a pretty good job. And for street/travel photography it is great if stopped at f5.6. Not to say that I carry it all of the time with me as it is very small and light, which I can not say about my 35 sigma 1.4.

    Would liked to have seen a sharpness and vignetting comparison at a more narrow aperture of something like f/5.6-f/8 vs just wide open. Many lenses can differ in sharpness/vignetting wide open, but many times when stopped down, that gap can close quite a bit. For me, the purpose of having a lens like this would be for landscape, most of which I shoot stopped down, so shooting at f/2.8 would be very rare. I have a heavy dslr with heavy, great quality lenses. My purpose for getting a mirrorless was for when size and weight makes a difference, like when backpacking or on long hikes. So for me, I would have no desire for the GM due to its size and weight (no matter how good the quality), but very interested in the Samyang.

    I actually just bought the Rokinon version of this lens. (It should arrive this week.) As a filmmaker, I can make the f2.8 work for me. As far as image quality goes, most audiences wouldn't know - or care - to look for the things that photographers pixel peep about lenses. Sure, I want a good lens with good AF performance. But, I don't worry about the things about lenses that photographers focus on (pun intended). And from what I've seen in your video, it looks like I will get the performance out of the lens I am looking for. I have the A7iii, and I mainly plan on getting full frame lenses for it. So far, I've been lucky with the costs. The Rokinon I'm waiting for cost me $139 (Used-Excellent Condition). Thanks for your video. Subscribing.

    I went for the amazing Samyang AF 24mm f1.8 FE instead...It's just as sharp as the GM, right across the frame, but it actually has less CA at edges of frame and more resistance to flare when shooting into the Sun. Like the GM it is fully weather sealed. While it has a slightly slower maximum aperture, it can focus much closer than the GM (19cm vs 24cm) so you can get even smoother background bokeh. It's noticeably smaller than the GM (but noticeably bigger than the Samyang AF 24mm f2.8), and it's almost half the weight of the GM (230g vs 440g). It was designed for Astrophotography from the get go, so it has a reprogrammable instant infinity focus button making Astro work with it a doddle. But the best bit is the price...It costs less than 1/3rd the price of the GM! I paid I paid £396 for mine, brand new, from an ebay seller in Switzerland.

BUT , I AM REALLY SATISFIED with image quality produced ,the image at wide open sharp enough , when you step down to F4 it makes really really sharp .. For the price $300 it is worthed the money ...

    I love using mine on gimbal. Not every lens needs to be 1.2 or 1.4. That’s a ridiculous thinking because manufacturers want you to spend more money. If every lens you owned was 1.2 1.4then you’d be carrying around heavy lenses plus. The size would be crazy. Not everything shots need to be blurred out like crazy either. You need context so having details in the background is important. Plus If you shoot wide usually you are shooting group shots for events or landscapes so smaller aperture is important. Plus your shutter speed doesn’t need to be as fast with wide angles either since the hand holding rule is 1 over focal length on shooting someone standing. It’s the manufacturers like canon Sony Nikon sigmas etc that is forcing consumers to more to bigger higher cost lenses because it’s more profitable for them. Thank God Samyang has a lower cost not break the back or bank option. I worked in a camera store for years. I’ve seen Canon slowly creep up pricing so people starting out of photography is getting priced out of it like students or beginners.

    I'd go with the Samyang. I have other Sony lenses with a 24mm setting, but not as compact or light. The 1.4 isn't reason enough for me to add another heavy lens that's not even a zoom to my kit. The 24mm purchase would only be for convenience, quick shooting and ease of carry with a low cost.

    if anyone is watching this trying to make their mind up, ME TOO! ..BUT theres a new lens on the block.. sigma just launched a 24mm f2.. its got better focus breathing than the sony, its very sharp even at f2, its small, light, amazing build quality. weather sealed gasket! and i believe the AF is also pretty good. price comes in slightly higher than the samyang, but way less than the sony.. videos are just starting to dribble out on youtube.. have a look. thanks again peter for your videos. your channel is awesome!

    I had a copy of the Samyang 24mm f2.8 and it did not work on my A7 very well at all. Struggled to focus on any and everything (landscape shots, hills, people, buildings, streets, animals ect.) and it just didn't look super sharp. Probably got a bad copy but when I returned it, the Sony 28mm f2 was in sale, for less than the Samyang so naturally, I got one of those instead. FOV is a little narrower but it is much much, much sharper and AF, what can I say? Very accurate and is probably the fastest out of my 4 Sony FE lenses? (24-105mm f4, 50mm f1.8 and 70-200mm f4, does make sense that it is the fastest) Am very happy, especially for the price I paid 😁

    What verson of LR are you using? I have the Samyang 14mm 2.8 and there is a profile for that, you have to manually chose it though. It doesn't auto select it when you check the profile correction. I am using CC 2019 though.

  • @0ooTheMAXXoo0

    All the in-camera corrections are saved in the RAW file. Capture One lets you choose which to keep when you import... Surely LR has some similar capability / options? Maybe you have to set options in the settings so you just do not realize that it is possible?

    I already have a beautiful vintage manual 24/2 so if I had to buy a lens in that range I would go for the samyang - not only because of its price but its form factor. I think 1.4 at wider ranges is often overkill and it produces the same kind of completely out of focus look which makes photographers lazy in terms of the kind of background/foreground textures & gradations of blurs & over all composition.

  • @ChrisM-yq2pq

    @ChrisM-yq2pq

    Giti Thadani yes absolutely makes lazy modern photographers. You need combo of close focusing distance and big aperture to blur out background anyways. Only reason to shoot with big aperture wide 24mm is for super low light photography like clubs or church without flash.
