Great video Dunna, though I will be keeping my original 16-35, just doesn't make sense to upgrade considering the price difference is huge! Here in Australia, the new mark II cost pretty much the same as a 70-200 GM f2.8 II which to me is crazy. Also the original still holds it's own in every way. Super sharp, nice contrast, good enough focus distance, and size is manageable. Though none the less great video :)

Currently, I can get a brand new Mk I for $1900 (AUD) but the Mk II is $3700! As a business expense, it's a no-brainer for me but I don't think I could justify the Mk II as a recommended upgrade for non-business use.

Thanks for the review, Dunna. I recently purchased this lens from your review and I couldn't be happier. It's so light! At first I thought I had received a model that had somehow been hollowed out inside. My first non-prime, zoom lens and I'm so glad this is the one I decided to go with!

@@gonzalotapia1020 definitely is when you consider I no longer bring my 24 1.4, 50 1.8 and 85 1.8. The 16-35gm1 was very heavy but limited in its focal range. I brought it for wide angle shots and I love the 35mm look. The 24-70mm provided me with an all in one solution and I made due with my iPhone for ultra wide shots. So yeah it’s all relative for sure. 680g for a lens that isn’t ideal for walking around photography/video vs 695g for a lens that provides tons of versatility that most of your other lenses stay home.

Thank you for your video. I had the version 1 until my son “borrowed” it so now I have the version 2 on pre-order. I’m a stills shooter and have debated on getting it since the FE PZ f/4 came out but really like this and I own the other GM II members of the holy trinity. I’m also comparing it to the Canon RF 15-35/2.8 with IS. That lens does weigh a lot more at 840 grams but is slightly wider and has the image stabilization. (I shoot both Canon and Sony). I think this will be better when combined with the A7RV as the best land and it’s only slightly heavier at the reduced weight to the 35/1.4 GM. We will see how it goes when I get it.

LOVE how light this is compared to my version 1!!!! Definitely noticeable throughout a wedding day 😅 My copy’s zoom barrel is extremely easy to twist especially from 35 towards 16. Just picking it up to shoot after each time I put it down/holding the lens turns the barrel. My version 1 copy was nice and didn’t easily turn so I didn’t have to worry about it not staying in the right focal length during the event. Do you notice the zoom barrel being like this or should I exchange my copy? 🙌🏽🤔🥲

I'd still take the Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 for more than half the cost and internal zooming. Is it a 2.8? No. But with how well Sony bodies handle low light these days and the difference between 2.8 and 4.0 not being astronomical in regards to bokeh, I can live with it. If I want better bokeh, I'm pulling out one of my 1.8 or 1.4 primes.

Yeah, sadly there's far less of a difference between GM 16-35 and GM2 16-35 than there is between GM1 & 2 of the 24-70. And like you said, that speaks more to how good the original GM 16-35 is. If I already had GMii 70-200 to complete the holy trinity, would certainly consider trading in my GM 16-35 for the GMii.

External Zoom is really a bummer. Especially when you shoot ultra wide. This is a landscape photographer lens and even on a gimbal the lens hood matters when we talk about balancing. This 10mm more wouldn't have been a big deal but building an internal zoom would have been great. Dissapointing, as I was waiting for this piece of gear since long time. At least a lock button or a Smooth switch for the zoom could have been done.
