Samsung S7 edge (sm-g935f) dead fix (Power Ic Reballing)

There are many causes for Samsung won't turn on issue. As for Samsung not turning on accompanied with 50mA-80mA boot current

Good job! 👍You got me laughing at "normal dead"! 😄All Galaxy S7 are dead and it's all normal! Was that a MAX chip? So the phone was not charging, not powering on, and taking only 50 to 80 mA from USB with battery connected? I have one taking 250 mA with same symptoms. I have a Galaxy S7 (SM-G930F) and I was told by a KZread "star" repair guy that it's a dead UFS chip. But I don't trust him. I sent him the phone and he sent it back, without repairing it, without rescuing data, and more importantly without the 12 screws I sent him in a zip bag! I told him not to assemble it, as he offered this as a cheaper return option. I had already disassembled it myself before I sent it to him. I tried replacing the battery. So just because he could not charge me more for assembly and return shipping, he decided not to include the 12 screws that I had sent to him along with the phone. He is from Europe. I would much rather have an Indian or a Chinese guy have a look at my phone and maybe repair it. They know nothing over here (Europe). They just do board swaps without repairing anything, and to them, everything is just "dead". They want to charge you extortionate amounts of money for "data rescue" if it's an easy and quick job for them. I have seen this same pattern actually with more than one repair shop, because I had two Galaxy S7 die while charging (short circuit most likely) and it was blamed on "dead" UFS chip. So I decided I will try to repair it myself. Will see how that goes. I have learned a lot from my friends from India and China. So thank you for sharing these videos!

Did you ever got yours repaired without data loss? Mine froze several times until a final crash. I am afraid repairers will just say it needs chip/board replacement without trying any resoldering and keeping data...

@@TenjinYoukai Unfortunately, I did not. But I was able to independently verify and come to the same conclusion as the guy I had sent the phone to previously. The UFS chip is indeed dead! With emphasis on "independently" and "verify". Because, that's what science is all about, it's about seeking the truth. Unlike him, I did not just brush it off as unrepairable based on loose indications like being stuck at 250 mA, which could come from almost any failed component or power rail. Instead, I had put in the work necessary to positively identify the cause of the problem. I can now talk about specifics and appreciate the problem better, and also the difficulty in doing this type of repairs. Specifically, it's the controller part of the chip that has failed. With this being a highly integrated monolith chip, and without commercially available tools for rebuilding the controller, let alone tools for breaking the hardware encryption or having encryption keys made available, it's nothing short of a scientific breakthrough if anyone ever manages to extract any data from these chips. Maybe in the future, when there are flying cars and robots that are smarter than humans. But until then, I don't think it's possible. I got so invested in fixing this issue that I ended up setting up my own repair lab. Procuring all the tools and getting up to speed on how to use them, and how to fix common issues with mobile phones took me about three months. Before I even attempted to repair my own phone! So in the end, I was very disappointed for not being able to fix it. But it is what it is now. Technically, the phone itself is not dead. It's just that the screen is not coming on to show a sign of life. Yes, it has a dead chip, but if you replace that chip, the phone will start working again. In this case, the 250 mA is not an indication of a typical short circuit, but of a low power consumption. It's stuck in a pre-boot state, and it's not able to fully power on and start booting because the UFS chip is failing to initialize. It's like a PC with a broken hard drive. You replace the hard drive and the PC will start working again. It has to power on fully and boot up, because that's the only way you can rescue data on devices that run on Android 6.0 or newer Android versions, due to mandatory hardware encryption. On older devices, encryption was not enabled by default. On the very early devices, encryption did not exist at all, so you could do a chip-off procedure where you would remove the chip from the board and read it in a computer to rescue the data. This is not possible on any Android device released in the past 6 years or so. Even though I did not recover the data, I am glad I saw this through to the end. It would have bugged me otherwise. It's not often that I encounter a problem that I can't fix when I set my mind to it. But this one got the better of me. I learned a lot in the process. So it was not all a waste of time, and the tools are already proving useful for other projects. It does sound like you could be having a dead UFS chip as well. But don't be discouraged. Something else could be causing the issue with your phone. You can leave it to a repair shop that does this type of work. Most of them will not charge you if they can't fix it. But what does it mean to "fix it"? That's a matter of perspective. Swapping out the board for a new one, including all the components on it will definitely not help save your data, but it will very likely fix your phone. They may charge you if you decide that all you want to do is a diagnostic. If you would like, I can show you how you can see for yourself if it's the UFS issue. It's fairly simple, but you will need to get some basic tools and supplies like wires, cables and a TTL converter. No soldering is necessary if you use a breadboard. Let me know if you're interested.

@@samirgunic I see, thank you for your detailed feedback. I left it at a repair shop and they will send diagnostic and budget sometime next week. If they suggest a replacement of the board or other internal component, which will surely wipe my data, do you think I could suggest they try a reflow instead (if it helps with whatever issue it has), even if it only helps it live/boot temporarily? I would just need enough time to copy over my data.

@@TenjinYoukai You could suggest that they do that, but I doubt that they will listen to you on how to do their job, and they will not appreciate your suggestion. As someone who likes to build and fix things around the house and around the car, as well as other things, I often find myself conflicted when I have to leave it up to someone else to do what I know I could do better, and I often find myself having to redo the job myself later on. You know the saying, if you want to do it right, you better do it yourself. That's my motto. But once you leave it to someone else, you have to trust that they know what they're doing and will do a good job. There are plenty of moments where I would rather not do things myself. Either because I don't know how, I don't have time, or I just don't want to and would rather pay someone else to do it. But because of my bad experience with companies that do a lousy job, I end up doing things myself. More often so in recent years. Maybe if you agree to pay them for the extra effort, even after they tell you that the chances of saving any data this way is close to zero? In that case, you will likely lose money. It all comes down to doing a proper diagnostic first and finding the cause of the problem. That's how you know what the best course of action might be. If they are competent enough, they will consider doing a reflow anyway, without any input from you, if they see that this might be the right thing to do. Better yet, they will do it properly and not only reflow but also reball it. You should not need to do their job. However, if the controller of the UFS chip is failing to initialize, then there is not much that they can do about it. Reflowing will most likely not help. In that case, the chip is likely to have internal damage. It could be a corrupted firmware or translation tables and what have you, or it could be an internal short circuit. Reflowing may only be helpful if the cause of the issue is bad connection, which reportedly can happen if the phone is dropped for example. The guy I had sent my phone to previously had a case like that, and it was also an S7, and he fixed it by reballing the CPU, RAM and the UFS. Interesting enough, that phone was also stuck at about 250 mA. Note that there is a difference in replacing a board as a whole, and transplanting chips from one board to another, often referred to as board swapping (somewhat ambiguously). Also, doing board level repairs where you replace components such as capacitors and inductors will not ruin your chances of rescuing data. On contrary, if that's the only issue with it, this will fix the board and allow you to extract data. As long as the CPU and UFS are preserved, the data is retained. Because of the tight security, these two are married at the factory and they have to be transplanted in pairs. The encryption keys for the UFS are stored in a special area of the CPU called the TrustZone which is an integral part of Samsung Knox. So each chip is useless without the other, and there are no two identical pairs in existence. Assuming it's a professional repair shop that does this type of work, they are already informed about this. What often happens is that these "repair" jobs quickly turn into "data rescue" jobs, as the data is usually more valuable than the device that stores it. So if the priority here is getting the data back, they will do exactly what you suggested. They will do whatever necessary to revive the phone. Even if it only works for a few minutes, that's plenty of time for them to extract the data. They will not care about making a lasting repair.
