I have a lot of respect for Davis, however I was never much of a fan of his singing. But years ago, in the ‘80s, I heard the studio LP version of him singing “Bye Bye Blackbird” on a distant AM station while I was driving on the highway. I eventually tracked down the album which I think cost less than four bucks. I admit he does a great job singing it, but it’s the arrangement of the song that really makes it work for me. The album version, by the way, is much more effective than this live version. So there you go, my favorite Sammy Davis Jr. song is his version of the great standard “Bye Bye Blackbird.” Followed, of course, by “Candy Man.” hotcha.
