He is really a neat guy! This way he isn't lonely, and meets all kinds of people. Love his sweet demeanor.

He seemed like a pretty good fella. Not many like him left in the Appalachians.

What a good bloke he was.. not a greedy bone in his body, you can just tell. He's happy enough to struggle his way through life with the little old possession's he has collected over the years.. Some folks need big expensive fancy new things in life .. them folks are materialistic and are out to impress and show off .. but folks like Sam don't feel the need to make others jealous and envious of him, he knows the simplest way to be content without adopting the pretentious ways of most of the folk these days.

I lived a quarter mile from them. His wife passed a few months ago. Would give her a ride down the switchback to the grocery store, lotsa folks did. Sam would be out there in the winter, freezing ass cold, and he would be without a shirt. Sometimes he was whittling and some times drinking beers with rifle on his lap.I’m in AVL now, but lived in Gerton, where this was filmed for a few years.

As a Hillbilly from Carolina I need to meet him. I wonder if he's still in good health since this video is a couple of years old.

So many nice comments for this man I really liked reading them. I admire him too just like you do. I don't care what kind of flag he wants to fly. I am sure he would open his heart to anyone in need. What a good man. God, please bless this man soon.

I could sit in a room with him for days (and more), and listen to his stories. He sounds like a really nice man. I wish I could meet him.

I liked the old fella, I could easily enjoy beers and conversation until time to go to bed, I sure enjoyed my travels into Tennessee, Alabama, met some great folks and made memories I will never forget God willing.
