Basically, if you were accused of being a witch you were dead one way or another. In the case of the dunking, if you drowned you were innocent; if you didn't you were either tortured to death or hung (at least here in the states) or burned at the stake in Europe. A definite no win situation.
@FrenkTheJoy
2 жыл бұрын
Nah the punishment for witchcraft was strangulation in Europe as well (usually hanging). At some point it actually became a crime to accuse people of witchcraft, because in certain religious beliefs it's not possible to even BE a witch, so accusing someone of being a witch means you believed it was possible, which meant you were guilty of heresy, the punishment for which was being burnt at the stake. There's also a number of accused witches who were acquitted, including Henry VIII's great-grandmother Jacquetta of Luxembourg.
@weatherwitchandfelinefamiliars

Well over 50% of the accused witches in England were acquitted. There is some appalling misinformation out there even in some scholarly publications. Many witches were simply of the wrong Christianity, ie Protestant when the Catholics were in and vice versa. It is a fascinating and incredibly sad history but please be aware of the misinformation, sensationalism and just outrageous claims that detract from the poor men and women who were jailed or tortured but very rarely killed as witches.

This makes me wonder if I ever had any ancestors who've been tortured. It's awful to think some of this stuff is still happening 😕
@MisterRlGHT

Organized torture today is still quite common and much more advanced -- the Inquisition didn't dream of acetylene torches and electric drills and such, and God only knows what goes on at Gitmo or the secret special rendition sites.

I just visited this museum. It was ok. The video makes it seem so much better than it is. It's literally like a few rooms. 35 bucks and within 15 mins, it's completed. And on top of that, it's all replicas. There are no actual artifacts. Don't feel bad

humans are indeed animals, they are at the top of the food chain because its the species that can kill the best.
So who's worse the heretics who questioned the church or those who tortured them in horrendous ways? I think most were sadists who enjoyed their work too much and probably should have been tortured themselves.

Believe it or not, more than a few torturers were employed as executioners and it was a job that paid (not that well). They got up in the morning, ate breakfast, kissed their wives and children goodbye, and went to work. At the end of the day, they came home, ate dinner, went to bed, and did the same thing the next morning. Please don't get me wrong, I am not playing Devil's advocate, just stating how it was done. I have been studying Torture for years in an effort understand Man's inhumanity toward a fellow Human Being. I DO NOT condone torture in any form. I posted this response to foster intelligent conversation and to see how many others out there are willing to take me up on it.
It stounds me how people were able to come up with all these horrific methods. For some reason though, nail removal really gets to me. I couldn't even watch that part of the video. Makes me instantly panic and sick!

Intriguingly Atrocious
I’ve been in the torture museum in California and it was incredible. They have the devices there and you don’t really know what they are but you start reading the description and it makes your stomach turn!
The Witch dunker was especially grim,People are the worst to people.
This is terrifying to think that people both criminals and the innocent went through this horror!!
Whenever I remember this part of history I'm also reminded of how lucky I am to be born nowadays, when quite a few of these instruments have been transformed and are now used for cure or to make life easier instead of simply inflicting pain. One example is the mouth pear, the ancestor of the gynecological speculum which even though it may be a little uncomfortable, is essencial to prevent deadly diseases like cervical cancer by catching and treating lesions early.
Sheesh, this place was intriguing and disturbing.
That’s a very interesting museum Jake! Hope you have a Happy New Year and stay safe! 😊😊
I'm a huge fan of history and looking at these medieval torture stuff in this museum is both unsettling and interesting to look at! Also happy new year! Jacob stay safe and stay awesome
okay but can we talk about how awfully graphic these are? Especially for back then in the 1800s..like- imagine doing that to someone and then going to church afterwards thinking because you go to church you're going to heaven LMAO
WoW that was actually crazy !!! Thanks so much for sticking through it and sharing it with us !!! I just loved you narration and comments !! It made it bearable !!!
I used to live in Chicago, and I passed this museum while visiting last week, and I wanted to go so bad so THANK YOU for making a tour
I’ve been wanting to visit this place so thanks for giving us a glimpse of how it looks inside.
Great video as always, we love dark museums like this. Keep well and have a great New Year.
I was worried this was a set up, so glad you got out of there with all your parts. Have a amazing 2022 Jacob!
Do you have to be 18 or over to enter this museum? It's weird living in a society where sex education is more controversial than torture.

Always happy to watch a carpetbagger video!
The fact that most of these punishments, came from the religious sector,honestly makes me believe there is no god. Just men using "god" as a means for keeping the masses in line.
Excellent video as always! Definitely cheered me up whilst isolating 😍 we have similar museums here in the UK, the York Dungeons is not too far from where I live and it’s absolutely fantastic, so much history in that city!

That bathroom was sparking clean! Oh! And the exhibits were great also. :)
I like that it's a "Medieval" torture museum but has wax models dressed like it's the 17th and 18th centuries and one guy clearly from the 20th century. The medieval era ended in like the 15th century (not like there's on exact date and time it ended, but generally it's accepted that Medieval became Renaissance in the 1400s)

The wax figure in the red shirt at 5:49 looks like Rasputin, and is dressed like him too. And he was born in 1869 which is definitely not medieval times.

Plus it's also known widely as the joker (from batman) smile .. several versions of Jeremiah aka the joker (esp the Gotham tv version) had this and he even practiced it himself on his followers and foes .. apparently too it was said the screams from the victims ripped the smile wider as was done when they were awake and strapped down 😰😢
Omg I would love to visit this place. It looks so cool and interactive!
Fun fact: when prisoners were in line for the gilliatine (I can’t spell it💀💀) they would fight to be first in line, because the blade would get duller and duller each time and you wouldn’t die with one clean cut
