Hey, this is John from Indiana. John from Indiana. What's on your mind? all right sorry about that I had a business call coming in so I apologize. I also had a business call. It was with you. you just didn't answer. Yeah. Well fair enough. Yeah, Sam. Thanks for taking my call. I really I I've I've had a lot of thoughts over the last few weeks and I've been trying to call in to oops to kind of get them across. and I don't know. I guess what I would really like to talk about ultimately is that because I've spent a few weeks thinking about this. I think your show has a bit of a blind spot. think just one? Well I mean I think you guys do really good coverage on trans issues for the most part. I think you guys need to have more trans people on your show though. and more callers or I mean I don't know. I called you out on Twitter. I imagine you saw that I was being inflammatory to catch your attention. so you know I'm sorry for doing that. But I don't know. I did not but go ahead. all right so say you're saying what your point is. so my biggest point is that this whole Ana Kasparian thing came up. And I feel like a lot of people have sort of gotten some Whiplash from this. And I've not really wanted to call it what it is. And I think only really one person in that leftist media sphere which is Olay or early on me I can't say her name right just called it out as being a gift which is immediately what I thought it was. and I don't know, I just feel like you guys kind of dropped the ball on that. Because you never put the tweets up. You never showed the context. And you've got a lot you didn't I address this before? I mean I wasn't here. My understanding is that things progressed somewhat last week when I was out. But two or three weeks ago I thought I addressed it. Didn't I? You did and that was that it was me that I called in. You spoke to me. Oh okay and so like I was trying to call in about it because people kept talking about the Tweet as if it were a tweet and it was actually a lot of tweets. I mean I'll be honest with you. I saw that one tweet from Ana and that's what I was responding to. I yeah don't like I'm not on Twitter as much maybe as people want me to be. I don't know if you know there's this sense that like you know I won't talk about tyt because I'm friends with them. or because I do business with them. I've known Cenk for a long time but he lives in L.A. I mean I've probably spoken to him in person I don't know maybe 10 times over the past almost 18 years. I've been on that show. At one point we were you know part of the KZread Network which and just to make this clear to people the relationship that we had in business was I was their client. In other words, I paid them money to optimize our KZread channel. because we did that for Mar far longer than I think a business person who had a business sense would have done it. Because I didn't want to have to manage somebody doing that for us. I didn't know how to do it. I didn't care and this and that. so I was never getting money from them. I don't have for some reason some you know nefarious reason not to criticize them. But I also don't feel a huge compulsion to observe every tweet that they do. or what's on their show. I cannot express to people how misguided they are in terms of what they assume I watch daily. I don't have enough hours in the day for me to monitor what TYT is doing. And I think like on balance my sense is then you know I've always you know considered myself to the left of like you know of Cenk. I had arguments with him 18 years ago or 15 years ago about the Bill Clinton administration. And you know but I don't but that was just like I was invited onto the show. Or I was on the show or whatever I was. And that came up.

Yeah, I think people who are too wrapped up in online politics just aren't aware how normal what Ana said is even amongst liberals and isn't necessarily a grift. It's unfortunate, but it's not MRs job to take down or epically own TYT even if that was possible. The best they can do is cover it and state their opinion, which they did.

it't not about being parasocial. it's about journalist due diligence. Sam didn't want to listen to caller (and/or they weren't very clear about what they want to say) who clearly didn't want to change what Sam is talking about or his job on the show. It is in fact business (it's another point of Sam's misinterpretation of caller opinion) and Sam has people working on it. Every news and subject they are talking about can be (and should be) prepared with due diligence. That's how you suppose to talk about things that happen. Give background information, present facts, give opportunity to all sides of the subject to be presented (but without unhealthy "all sides are equal") and then give your opinion. That way its not only opinion pice but also normal and factual program. That's all.

This is quite literally life and death sh*t. The last thing trans people needed at this time was what Ana did here, and it wasn’t just about her one single tweet - it was the tweets she was liking (she literally liked a tweet saying “people won’t stand for this anymore, the revolt against TRANSTHINK is growing!”) and the unhinged, angry, overly defensive and dismissive response her and Cenk made on their show. She even went so far as to say she never wants to work with another leftist ever again! Like wtf! Again, this all may have the veneer of “internet Twitter drama” but we’re talking about real, actual trans lives that are under attack from every angle on a daily basis. And then to see how Sam was equally as dismissive and defensive of the caller in this clip was just crazy to me. I really would have thought he’d be way more open to criticism and critique but he IMMEDIATELY just went off on this person and barely let them get full sentences out, portraying them as a terminally online loser who was dragging Sam for not monitoring Ana’s tweets on a daily basis. All the caller was trying to do was give them additional information that Sam & co. clearly don’t have, so they could get a fuller picture of what Ana was doing and THEN respond to it.

yeah, they're pretty good about that stuff. while i think the caller is too hyperfocused, i do, to a degree, agree with his base point though. the drama with Ana lately wasn't just a single tweet, it was multiple statements on the show and was a huge discussion between multiple tyt members and other leftist personalities online that got pretty divisive, and the root of all of it is that Ana, either intentionally or unintentionally, is pretty fervently parroting and defending anti-trans TERF talking points. the caller is whiny, but sam's also being reductive by focusing on his complaint as a bickering over not being terminally on twitter, when i think the caller came off as abrasive but the overall point the caller has is valid: TYT and Majority Report are two of the largest most visible left outlets, if one of them's co-hosts start strangely pushing rightwing talking points repeatedly over this one issue with weak justification/rationale without real pushback from the rest of the network, we SHOULD be more attentive about that and try to keep our own house in order, so to speak. we are not immune to propaganda, and there are rightwing elements masquerading as left explicitly to influence the narrative, kneejerk reactionary politic isn't just a rightwing thing, just because she has a show doesn't mean she can't be taken as a fool. it does mean she can inadvertantly take others for a fool with her though due to her prominence/visibility. but ultimately Sam's not at fault, with how much horrible junk happens in a news day in today's political hellscape, he can't waste excessive time on what one peer is doing/saying on social media when he has 5 fascists doing fascisms to cover, and no one wants to have to be the heavy and critique a friend/ally, something we all need to get better at when it matters, i think.

The conversation begins with a caller criticizing the speakers for not addressing a controversial tweet by The Young Turks' (TYT) Anna Kasparian and the subsequent online backlash. They argue that the speakers, particularly Emma, should have been more vocal about the issue, and they question whether the speakers are doing enough to fight against transphobia. Sam responds by explaining that they believe Emma tackled the substance of the issue multiple times, and they reject the idea that she shouldn't have said anything, as she would have been criticized either way. Sam and the other speakers then discuss their openness to critique and their efforts to pay more attention to relevant legislation and concerns related to trans rights. The conversation also touches upon accusations that TYT is a right-wing project, which the speakers dismiss as absurd. They emphasize the limitations of their platform and their focus on the most significant issues, acknowledging that they may not cover every detail or aspect that the audience would like them to.

As a very vocal critic of both of them myself, I would like to say that I certainly do not think it's accurate to view TYT as a "right-wing" project, but at the same time I think it's equally naive to view them as a genuinely progressive project. The main show is a vanity project for Cenk and Ana, and a capitalist project for them and their investors - and I'm not talking about the ordinary people they dupe into giving them money.

I say ‘perhaps’ because, as someone in their late 50s, I’ve never seen so much societal (and thus political) leftward progress in the last 5+ years than I have my whole lifetime. Of course, this is driving the center-right to attempt a desperate correction. Either way, TMR is doing a pretty good job, I think, especially when compared with other outlets, of remaining thoughtful and balancing the varying tasks they’ve set for themselves. So why can't the team on the Majority Report do the same? Maybe its because they're good friends. That's the issues I have.

I do think Emma's response was a bit too defensive of Ana (just singing Ana's praises while saying she did disagree with Ana's tweet, but never said the Tweet was Transphobic), and the original title of the Video played into that more. THAT having been said.. Emma and Ana are/were close friends, so it's understandable.. I never honestly expected Emma to be Ana's harshest critic on this.. but I should probably come back to this after talking about Sam's response because there is a lot more context here.. Sam's take was slightly better, making sure everyone knew what was said was Transphobic.. but he doesn't have any reason to believe based on past commentary that they are Anti-Trans.. (it didn't help that Emma tried to minimize the comparison to JK Rowling, and that Emma also tried to defend Ana on the claim that no one has called her "Birthing Person" etc.. The fact that Emma did not call it Transphobic, and seemed to downplay it, while simultaneously overselling Ana's record on Trans issues as being kind of laughable to suggest Ana could even be Anti-Trans.. really didn't help the situation.) When the original title stating definitively that Ana wasn't Anti-Trans, Emma's really defensive comments, it did make it seem like Sam was walking on Eggshells a bit more.. _____________________________ Now it's very important to note.. this is not where the story ended.. ALL OF THIS was before Emma called out Cenk on Twitter.. and this is where Emma clearly put a lot of emotional energy trying to get her friends back on track, and was severely burned for her efforts. This is HONESTLY where a lot of people who have been strong Advocates for Trans people, give up and prioritize their Friendship and abandon the Trans Community. So to see Emma put in that kind of Emotional Labor and be willing to get burned by friends.. says so much about her as a Human Being shows that she really cares about Trans people and will not abandon them. ________________________________________ Which I should mention, if you see Trans people getting heated over these issues.. try to remember they're under constant attacks, and a good portion of them have been abandoned by people they thought were there friends, or their allies, and even family members.. so many times.. that their perspective is going to be very different from someone who is not experiencing this on the daily. _________________________________________________ Ultimately, while I do think they could of done better, to say they shouldn't of covered it at all.. is wild to me, I'm very glad Sam called it Transphobic.. and even tho Emma was defensive up front and I do wish she would retract her defense of Ana.. because Ana's personal track record on Trans issues... is actually quite bad.. and it has been for some time.. I do think it was actually very important for people to see Close Friends siding with Trans people... and it showed how much credit people were giving Ana, and to watch how Ana tried to turn these people into hateful Demons trying to destroy her.

Honestly it sounds like John from Indiana wants TMR to be a lot more like TYT, which is to say that it should be emotionally charged and mired in drama. I used to listen to TYT every day and left for practical reasons (could no longer watch a video feed and TMR's podcast feed isn't a clusterfuck like TYT's). One of the things I appreciate about TMR is how I don't have to listen to Cenk get all emotional about something and have some argument riddled with misunderstandings with Ana. I think it's pretty rich to call TYT grifters or right wing. That seems pretty goofy, they have different politics (Cenk specifically) and a different approach to what should be done to make the country better. Yes it is more centrist, or less ideological, Cenk is into electoralism very strongly, which is what backed him into this odd and stupid position. He succumbed to Carville-brain. I don't think there's anything productive to be had shouting down TYT, nothing in a tweet or show discourse will change their mind, they will just double down. The only thing valuable would be for people like Emma to maintain a relationship with Ana and exist as someone who disagrees with that position, and normalizes the correct positions.

  • @GeteMachine

    @GeteMachine

Which is funny, because that is what makes TYT's main channel reactionary and being reactionary is what lead to this, and why reactionaries will change their stances on things depending on what they are emotionally reacting to or against. TMR tends to have better takes because they sound more thought out, where as Cenk and Ana are very ego-driven and are morally influenced by just what bothers them personally, moreso Ana. You can see what makes them reactionary just by their overall content. Like Ana's rant against the abortion ban is no different than her rant now against Birthing People. Its the same energy. Different topic. She doesnt like what she doesnt like. Its why she can be hypocritical a lot of the time, more recently.

Sam kinda just became indignant. I don't think the caller ever even said what his point was. So not even saying it was valid just that Sam went nuclear defence. There is like 8 mins left in the video and his voice is still shrieking.

in the last clip posted, Emma (and whoever is off-screen in this clip) made sure to talk about how "birthing person" is cringe and clumsy before moving onto the bulk of their argument. Sam ends this clip with a call to action on making the full context known, when the caller was seemingly muted from the YT chat for making said context known. i think it's just that, at the end of the day, someone really close to y'all was transphobic, is still being transphobic, and is getting support from others at TYT for their transphobia. Based on all the clips it feels like pulling teeth to try to get y'all to give Ana the same treatment you'd give someone like Dore, and then when multiple people walk on the eggshells to bring it up to y'all you get upset there were any expectations of the show or the hosts at all.

Thank you so much, I’m feeling like I’m taking crazy pills. I don’t want them to address this 40 times; I think It only needed addressed twice (the first time Ana did it and the second fiasco she dragged it up). The second one proved beyond a doubt that the first one wasn’t a fluke, and no one at Majority Report has spoken about this issue contextually, which is the kind of analysis I come to a show like this for.

@@johnsushi2007 As someone who doesn't even know the full context it's clear they are much more hesitant than usual to dig into something here. It's awkward watching sam miss the point entirely and go on about it not being his job to see everything everywhere. Like yeah, that's fine but now that we have brought it to your attention maybe comment on it? No one is saying or demanding he see everything. It's disappointing seeing him use such an obvious straw man.

When you hear this caller, you have to take into account what Ana might be hearing or taking too seriously from the fringe poking and prodding her and it can explain her actions a lot, whether you agree or disagree with them.

Well, yeah. But she should know better, she's been at this for a very long time, and TYT knows better than anyone that a massive portion of their viewcount is from hatewatchers.

That tends to happen to Hasan as well and it drives me bananas when they give in to the troll. Don’t fall for the bait. Let them dance- focus on your work. Twitter is not RL

It's really simple. Caller wanted you to fully cover the TYT story instead of mention in passing. Cover left wing grifts like you cover right wing tweets

Of progressive shows, TMR probably talk about trans issues the most often. I feel like Emma says something about trans rights every show. Callers like this are ridiculous. Get off of Twitter. That's the problem with so many people. You live on Twitter and you make these things bigger deals than they are. How much effing coverage do you want of TWEETS? It's absurd. It's a terrible form of communication, and yet, people are putting a microscope on it as if there is something deep there to decipher.

Something I don’t understand is on the left we always say that people can identity they way anyone wants to. Anna literally asked to be called a woman not a birthing person, which I can see why that could be offensive because she is not just a baby making machine. Why are we attacking an ally to the trans community, Anna has fought for your rights and this is extremely discouraging to see.

I think they're looking at certain poll results and taking those stances for whatever reason, while not exactly explaining why they're doing it. Cenk has changed to being against defund the police, where he said he was for it before. Now, Ana is doing the same against pregnant people. I'm not sure why since she never intends to be pregnant. It's bizarre to me!

If she keeps pushing bad politics she may end up pregnant whether she wants to be or not. Fascist movements tend to see women the way terfs do, as a walking uterus. Their end goal is slightly different tho, use the breedmares to reproduce boy soldiers for the state. This is entirely the purpose of the BDM in NAZI Germany. Raise the girls to fulfill their primary purpose of being barefoot, naked, and pregnant in the kitchen.

They’re basically playing electoral politics. I’d they don’t see it as a winning issue, they’ll advise or somewhat speak out against it. They believe that if you have no power in government, you can’t get the changes you want. Many might disagree with that approach, but they see where they are coming from.

The reality is, no matter how much you do, it’s never enough. I’ve been told by people on KZread and Twitter that if I’m not willing to put myself literally in harms way for them, I’m not really an ally. Doesn’t matter how much I call people out, or try to change people’s minds. If I’m not willing to throw myself in front of a bullet, I’m not an ally. Just today I saw Vi La Bianca (formerly of Talk Heathen) say that we shouldn’t say anything positive about someone changing their mind and being accepting of Trans people because it took them too long to do it. I guess they had had trans people in their life for 9 years and it took them that long to deconstruct their beliefs. Apparently some trans people don’t really want people to change their mind unless it happens fast enough. There is a lot of self destructive behavior within that community that is NOT helping the cause.
