Sam Harris: Making Sense

On his wildly popular podcast “Making Sense,” Sam Harris and his guests explore some of the most important questions about the human mind, society and current events. Every week, he dives into some of the most controversial and thought-provoking issues we face in society today.
Harris’ new book, Making Sense: Conversations on Consciousness, Morality and the Future of Humanity, shares 12 discussions from “Making Sense” that are meant to push traditional conversations in unconventional directions. For Harris, honest conversation, no matter how difficult or controversial, represents the only path to moral and intellectual progress.
Join Harris for a candid conversation as he discusses how we can all “make sense” of our complicated world with honesty, clarity and reason.

"Intellectual honesty is a sacred principle. That has to be your religion. Being honest with yourself and other people. It’s an ethical imperative. It’s the only rail we can ride towards a future in which we can collaborate with one another in an open-ended way. Your capacity to be honest and honestly grapple with facts and the consequences of arguments is the only thing that guarantees that no matter how far we start out from one another on a given position, our worldviews can ultimately cohere if we just continue the conversation long enough. If I just get you the facts that you need to be persuaded. But once you decide to not honor those rules, once you say, “I’m just gonna play by the rules that 2 + 2 = 5 because it works for me”...that is what causes society to unravel. That is the precursor to people coming into the streets and burning down buildings. We have to honor the norms of civil conversation explicitly more and more now, and we especially have to do it when people are showing a tendency to live out this unraveling. When people show they’re bad at doing this, we have to double-down. The norms of civil, intellectually honest conversation is my generic solve for basically everything that ails us." - - Sam Harris

micstnight2010 Intelligence is the infinte reality that dumb is smart and smart is dumb because one concept cannot be seperated from the other concept, but the infinite illusion is that dumb isn't smart and smart isn't dumb because one concept can be believed to be seperated from the other concept. Five fingers is equal to one hand and one hand is equal to five fingers approximation of reality but one hand is unequal to five fingers and five fingers is unequal to one hand approximation of illusion. Honesty is dishonesty and dishonesty is honesty because they are infinitely together as reality but when you seperate honesty from dishonesty and vice versa that's infinte illusion. Free will is determine and determine is free will, the Universe in reality is determined to replicate itself infinitely so it will never change but our infinite belief of free will is that we will always believe this is happening and happened for the first time, it's called the eternal recurrence of the anthropic principle which is the logical explanation while God and evolution are illogical descriptions. Oh by the way, 2, 4 and five are fractions as 0 because 1 is the only whole number, zero is the concept of future points and one is the concept of a past point, which means 1 is zero and 0 is one, such as fraction is whole and whole is fraction.

You can see systemic racism in the criminal justice system where people of color are given stricter punishments for the same crimes, in the same districts, reliably. I think Sam didn't ask her simply because he knows this much, so no matter what answer she would have given, there is a reasonable answer she _could_ have given. And that's the one I just gave you.

Y'know I'll give her a pass, but to say "We brought Africans here...". No, no we didn't. That's the absolute wrong way to look at this situation. "We" were not alive yet, nor our parents, nor our parents parent's, nor theirs, or theirs, and so on. Many of us, for example, do not even have ancestors living her at that time. The only question, the only question at all is: what would make society better and fairer to Americans for a better future? Slavery is done. It's over. Let's move on and build a better America. End of story. If we don't drop the Slavery Cudgel, not spiritual progress will ever be made. You cannot right the wrongs of the past. It's never been done, and never will. It's like trying to get an ex to make up for all the bad shit he or she did to you or to get an abusive parent to somehow fix what happened. You can't. The best you can do is move forward in unison and help those who can't help themselves. The longer the rest of America talks down to Blacks as if the ONLY thing that can help them is if America bails them out, then Blacks will never get the glory of seeing themselves become their own makers, their own heroes, their own salvation. Simple as that. That's not to say America doesn't have a responsibility to black citizens, but what is important is the way we discuss these duties. We don't have a duty to black citizens because of racism, we have a duty to black citizens because they are Americans and humans. That may seem like a minor difference, but it absolutely isn't. One is a duty based in guilt and shame and cosmic justice, the other, correct one, is based in common humanity and a united vision of what humanity could and should be going forward.

The moral dilemma is with precedent and the foundation of the US constitution. It states that all men are created equal and then goes on to say that you have to be white to be a man. What does it mean to be true to the constitution ? Does it mean that we must stick with precedent and the rule of law so that only 'white' men are men.

Yes and no. Sadly we are at the point where civility is a future goal. The immediate goal is to rescue decency and an actual functioning democracy from imminent threat. Winning comes before forgiving in this case.

It’s beyond frustrating that really bright people have disconnected themselves from majority of society and they continue to time after time miss the goddamn mark. The intellectual echo chamber. For example, John Waters who still lives in Baltimore is much more grounded and is closer to the mark.

So picture " THE HITCH" doing this interview 15 min said and done, Lara totally psychologically dismembered and on her way to the SAFE SPACE, TO PET A therapy BUNNY and color. Just wanted to add a little levity!

I'm a Liberal, I voted for Bernie Sanders in 2016, I've already mailed in my Biden vote for this election. I'm against tearing down Confederate statues. My reasons have nothing to do with being a racist. You can disagree with me on that issue all you want, it doesn't bother me, but I'd just like to inform you that yes I am a fine person on the other side of that argument and no I am not a white supremacist.
