Sam Harris is a New York Times best-selling author, podcast host, and creator of the Waking Up Course. His books include The End of Faith, Letter to a Christian Nation, The Moral Landscape, Free Will, Lying, Waking Up, and Islam and the Future of Tolerance (with Maajid Nawaz). The End of Faith won the 2005 PEN Award for Nonfiction. His writing and public lectures cover a wide range of topics-neuroscience, moral philosophy, religion, meditation practice, human violence, rationality-but generally focus on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live.
Sam explains how experiencing unconditional love got him interested in meditation and how he reframes the “bad things” that happen to him in life. So get ready to learn all about consciousness on Episode 823.

    Agreed! He has such a depth and breadth of understanding on issues. And not just on a multitude of areas singularly, but he has deeply integrated his thoughts and views across disciplines extracting profound wisdom, which he presents as consistent within itself. Plus he is such an eloquent speaker and shares his wisdom with us! He also applies his well thought out ethics to himself and lives by his beliefs! Glad to see he is becoming more and more popular.

    Also, people are entrenched in their own little bubbles. Even the best persuader would have trouble reaching such people. Hell, you might have trouble reaching me depending upon your approach. Dealing with hard-headed people in my family has made me stubborn, too. Ideally, our differences should begin dispassionate discourse, but if I brought up any of my ideas on social media, I would get "cancelled" by 95% of my "friends" and family. I've been wondering whether I should just be myself. I don't think I could feel more alone than I already do. On the other hand, I hate conflict. I don't want to have to explain myself to those who never think critically. They barrage you with assertions and it's exhausting to debunk them one after another. I stopped fully being myself when I realized I'd never get through to my "friends" and family.

    everyone has had a guru, which just means teacher, and he has taught us things. As far as indian spiritual gurus, I think Krishnamurti was the only one worth listening to. What he said was not his main focus, which is what any good teacher does, enlighten their student on the teacher's fallibility and imperfection as a human. Too many of these spiritual guru types are filled with ego (see osho, sadhguru, deepak chopra, etc) and expect devotion without question or skepticism. Krishna-ji was different, he was told from childhood he' become a world guru to enlighten the world. But he ended up rejecting this notion, and just became a beautiful amazing public speaker without preaching and constantly checking himself and asking his listeners often even not to listen to what he said. Still, you can learn a lot just from his way of speaking, his manner and demeanor and occasionally some solid lessons on deep exploratory and stream of consciousness ways of thinking and speaking.

    @34672rr

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Dinkys999 He was one of a kind, the only others with his "aura" are some musicians and filmmakers and such. People expect high level guys like this like the did krishna-ji to teach them through words and techniques. But they are artistic in nature, they have something normal people don't, and they can't transfer it to anyone by being a guru because it's uniquely individual. The ones who do try to be gurus are often just technicians and scientists who are not light to themselves, but try to be for others, which doesn't work. What does work is just experiencing the light the great ones are. not enlightenment, just the best kind of entertainment with some little glimpses of bliss. I have become more of a light to myself over my life, starting when i was alone a lot as a kid. Eventually as i grew up, I realized all I have is inside my head, so I have to make it the best most exciting, stimulating, and happeneing place to be, like I constantly am throwing a party in my head, that is being a light to yourself. And I found that others can sense this light in my presence, even if they can't see it themselves, they see flashes through my eyes and manner and demeanor. And it makes me more attractive, interesting, and admired. One of my biggest influences in this idea came standing in line at subway of all place, and there were these twin babies in a stroller one in front of the other, so they couldn't see each other, but they had the EXACT same look on their face, which I had never seen on an adult much less babies. It was much different from usual baby expressions, which are usually emotional or spaced out. These girls were in complete bliss, and not like laughing or just fed, not smiles, but just this intense look of "I have dominion over the world, this is exactly where I want to be, no one is or has ever been in a better state of existence". I use the singular because they were ignoring each other, but had the exact same look and it was unmistakable how they felt right then.

    This was extremely enlightening because my normal ground state is like he felt on MDMA!! I feel like that all the time and when I took mdma it had almost no effect even at higher doses. I have been wondering since I was in first grade why I felt so different and I genuinely thought the whole world was completely insane. It’s been a long road, but I am finally realizing why I have felt like ET my whole life. 😳❤️ It was so bad that I refused to go to school and I have never been understood my whole life period. People try to put me in a box and It’s extremely frustrating. When I was in first grade I had to close my eyes and tried putting my head in my desk because of the spiritual fear and viciousness I felt and heard all around me. It was painful to be around the pain of others and it made me devastatingly lonely because I loved people so much. It’s not all roses to be like this and people would take advantage of me and I would let them because of the pain I saw in them. It’s a staggering nightmare considering that I even felt that way about my parents. I learned to be an actor early on. I am also transgender so it helped with that too. Seriously not fun. I feel like now it’s a blessing because it’s made me stronger and more aware than other people but it’s definitely been a long road with my eyes propped open in pain.

    I stumbled across a very similar method of thinking by chance. If I'm enduring something really painful, or about to do something I don't like I try and break it down into single moments. I ask myself if I can handle another second, and another second after that one is over. The answer is always yes and the awful time always ends eventually. This helped my overcome my fear of needles. I used to get anxious days in advance before a needle, but then I realized in this very moment I feel fine, all the way up until the actual injection into the skin. And even during that brief moment I asked myself (don't look or visualize what's happening, strictly in terms of how it feels, is this bearable ?) and again the answer was always yes. We experience way more painful things than needles regularly, but the idea of the needle is the biggest enemy.

    I picked up his basing on stoicism, Marcus Aurelius and that school....as the baseline for psychological health I think he said. It is very intriguing how stoicism’s rationalism meshes with the completely different paradigm of non dualism, consciousness awakening, enlightenment and all that Rupert Spira and the like talk about. I guess wisdom all arrives at basically the same point, but by different routes. “Don’t worry be happy”....is that song the key to life?

    Of course, I agree with all that's being said here and appreciate the sharing. The one thing to point out is that the description of the word "happiness" is very confusing in modern language. It's not a good or a bad word, it's just misunderstood. Happiness to me is not an excitement, euphoria or a state where you reach your goals. It's simple the calm place where you can observe the present moment without judging it. And yes, we are all trying to be happy and we want life full of happiness but understanding what happiness is is a key. The word mindfulness is also confusing because it points to a mind and it's fullness. In reality, there is no mind and there is no fullness so trying to be mindful is not possible. Mind is a concept and fullness is a concept that can not be found nor experienced. Only the present moment can be experienced and if this presents is observed without believes of any concept, we only find stillness. This is what I call happiness and wanting to experience it is our true nature. So, be happy, but understand what it means. Again, great content and thanks for putting this together. May the force be with us all :)

    @AllSeeingEye ofGod I appreciate the idea your sharing here, but to be fair Sam is not a Buddhist, nor does he try to convert people to buddhism. He's concerned with experiences that are central to all religions, the parts which we can all experience that aren't inherently religious and which experience offer particular insight into our lives and the nature of consciousness which can be very invaluable to society. It's best to in my opinion to take what is useful and discard the rest.

    I "felt" true unconditional love at the time i had my second psychosis (Christmas time 2019). Ofcourse, there were many after-thoughts which were nonsense... for example i would be another Jesus figure, so i had to choose 12 people who would follow me etc.. also i REALLY thought i would die and be resurrected after 3 days and nonsense like that. I struggled a few hours but finally surrendered...., i trusted in "God" and whatever he wanted me to do (except hurting anyone) i'd do it. If it ment to suffer and die.. i would do it without any doubt. I had tears of joy running down my face feeling loved, right after that mixed with tears of suffering cauze i didnt knew what i had been missing my whole life.... I didnt take any Medication or "Drugs" then nor now, i do meditate tho.. I can not tell you what to do with this little story of mine, i just wanted to share it. I am greatfull for beeing able to listen to you guys. Lewis, Sam, you 2 make the world better =)

    Torstein O I believe ~God~ is the configuration of the whole! And the Ego is the experience of the individual! Even though as the whole it’s a blissful state of being--we enjoy the adventure of separation and regardless of the suffering life can deliver, being human is glorious! I suppose that could be defined as an addiction to living or a fear of dying! I don’t know--a thought provoking notion!

    Man, some really good bits here. Like looking at your physiological reaction and taking it out of its context (feeling anxiety before a date). Or realizing how much you would pay to be back in your current state if you had things much, much worse. Sam explains these ideas in a way that makes me realize they are completely achievable approaches to reasoning about our situation.

    42:13 How do you know if by trying solve a problem, you're not actually creating one - especially if there wasn't actually a problem to begin with? Lewis, check out Gyozo Margoczi. His book, FEELINGS: The need for a new science, goes into the distinction between feelings which are kind of an animal-like reactions to situations and emotions which are the thought-forms that we overlay on top of them. It’s a dense book, not easy to get through but it’s worth looking into. and no one has had him as a guest😉.
