All of Sam's points are cogent, but what made me an unabashed atheist was when I considered how the nature of the biblical God flies in the face of what we would accept from a human father. If a human father said to his children, "Worship me and do my bidding or else suffer a hellish eternity of torture. Oh, and if you ask me for something in return, e.g., food, water, healthcare, whatever, I may or may not respond. Just deal with it." we'd say that man suffers from extreme narcissism and sociopathy, and we'd consider his behavior child abuse and/or neglect. The idea that such behavior is supposedly the universal source of goodness and love is absurd on its face.

Claiming that god wrote the bible to be palatable to the people of the time is just baffling, it means he is hiding his true feelings to appeal to his followers lives, which he sure as shit hadn’t done in any other part of the bible

Also, if God can't even tell his own followers that they shouldn't take slaves, how much of the rest of the bible should we believe in? Either God is weak and can't even tell his followers what to do (why? fear that they wouldn't agree with his edicts?), or God is not a force of Good in the world, since he endorses slavery.

Actually wondering if the difference between a religious loon and a religious moderate is not so much what they believe, but the extent to which modernity and secular culture allows them to ignore certain parts of scripture. We can ignore scriptural admonishment of adultery, usury and other modern compromises, but adding homosexuality to those exceptions is really a personal choice.

OK, here is a religion based on this definition of "God" (to the exclusion of others): "God=Love". Essentially that use is a metaphor wherein the speaker is saying: "I think the highest (moral) truth is love." That's basically it for this religion, very simple, the golden rule and few other teachings on love, forgiveness and the like. Nothing supernatural at all, nothing demeaning, no religious rules. Folks are only instructed to engrave love on their heart. But the atheist says in advance I am without belief in love.
