About the Festival
Established in 1987, Melbourne International Comedy Festival (#MICF) is one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world, alongside Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival.
Over the last week of March and into April every year, #MICF transforms Melbourne into the comedy capital of the world, as local and international comedians take to theatres, pubs, clubs and broom cupboards citywide - shining a spotlight on the silly, the serious, the heart-breaking and the hilarious.
With hours of comedy content every Festival, this channel delivers some of the highlights over the years. Delve into the archive of comedy with international stars (such as: Katherine Ryan, Michael Che, Sara Pascoe, Trevor Noah), home-grown #aussiecomedy heroes (including: Hannah Gadsby, Josh Thomas, Aunty Donna, Ronny Chieng) and so many more! I saw Sam Campbell at the Sit Down Comedy Club in Brisbane in 2013 and he threw durries into the crowd and it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. 10 years later I still think about it.

    I'm fascinated by the psychology of people who think he's not funny at all because I don't think there's ever been another standup who makes me laugh so hard so consistently. I was crying with laughter like a minute into this

    i came to see if he was funny after watching 2 episodes of Taskmaster with him on them, I thought that as i found him only mildly irritating and nothing else that i must be missing something, but no. i watched this and i didn't get annoyed, nor irritated and certainly didn't raise a smile. it's seems to be a chap out of place, as if he's turned up for the wrong job interview, tries to blag it anyway but doesn't get the job. can you perhaps point to something in his set that was funny? perhaps with some help I'll "get it".

  • @sione_etc

    @sione_etc

    @@dannygolightly865 I think "as if he's turned up for the wrong job interview and tries to blag it anyway" is actually a decent description and it gets at why I find him funny! A lot of his schtick is kinda like he's an old school observational comedian who doesn't really know anything about the real world or how to construct a joke properly. As someone who finds most "typical" standup unfunny, his particular style of subverting the structures is really funny to me. Like jumping to "Someone was telling me the West is collapsing" out of nowhere is already hilarious to me because it's so jarring that he'd just suddenly bring up this huge political topic with zero transition. And the way he says "Is that [breath] true?" as though he's randomly out of breath and has no idea where he's even going with it. Then where a normal comedian would probably go on to make some satirical political commentary about the topic, it's like all he can come up with is "there's too many clocks". And it's like he's trying to go into this classic "What's the deal with / in my day" routine complaining about society but he's talking about clocks and he's also not confident at all in it. "Back in my day - well not in my day, but wasn't there a time - I don't know actually - surely there was -" So by the time he does actually pin down his argument against there being "too many clocks" it's totally absurd. I always find it so funny the way he builds up to getting outraged about something that makes no sense like using the microwave to check the time, implying he's some kind of clock conservative who believes society has gone soft because we don't check the time on the town clock tower anymore. "Midnight would travel through your body! It'd put ya right!" On top of that I just find his mannerisms and use of language really funny. There's this out-of-place eloquence and old-timeyness to the way he relates some things which obviously contrasts with the absurdity of the content and his general awkwardness. I feel like detractors seem to think the awkwardness and clumsiness is actual incompetence lol but it's clearly intentional and he uses it very cleverly.
