It's a no brainer why Sam Amidon has such an affinity for Arthur Russell. Arthur loved all folk traditions, all types of ethnic and rhythmic expression. I think there is a purity in the oral traditions and expressions where each generation preserves, respects (more accurately venerates) , but still innovates and interprets. That freedom was built in to the tradition. It's easy to lose that vitality in Classical, Jazz, Blues anything with a name and an audience.

These ancient songs sound full of life in the hands of Sam Amidon. No surprise, having heard most of his records, but this is a particularly captivating set. Thanks for capturing it!

Sam and Shahzad are long-time dear music people, but I am unfamiliar with the lead guitarist-anyone know his name? He did a great great job.

52:23 Is singing notes to the wrong fa-sol-la syllables the equivalent of partying with a sombrero? 45:38 Is singing "the melody" of Cusseta wrong (m7-m8) the same as calling your sports team the Redskins? Is Amidon carelessly pillaging here, or is there real respect for the shapenote art?

Amidon (whose music I love) sings the wrong syllables (fa-sol-la) to the notes at 52:23. He sings the melody of Cusseta wrong at 45:38. My question is, is he being careless with this tradition, sloppily grabbing a fistful of it to splash some authenticity onto his art? If so, what gives? As a Lefty, he should be very sensitive to "cultural appropriation." Or, maybe he's using it in an "artistic" way, fragmenting the note/syllable relationship in the tradition of modern arts. I'm not assuming it's the first option; it's an honest question.

@@nolandolaher2817 it's an honest question. Restated: Sam is singing the wrong shapenote syllables to those notes. What's up with that?

@@monologtube technically they are not the 'wrong' shape note syllables - I am using an alternate solfege system related to shape note singing where the syllable used at any given moment corresponds to a specific shape note singing attended in my childhood and appearing in my mind at that moment, based off of the date of the singing in question cross-referenced with who brought what to the pot luck meal
