Ed Sanders Recalls His Friendship With Harry Smith [Interview Video]

Музыка

Ed Sanders, poet and founding member of The Fugs, recalls his deep friendship with Harry Smith, compiler of the highly influential 'Anthology of American Folk Music.' Smith produced The Fugs' first album in 1965 for Folkways Records. This video is from a 1997 interview recorded at the Barns at Wolf Trap.
The 'Anthology of American Folk Music' box set is available to order on Smithsonian Folkways: folkways.si.edu/anthology-of-...
First published in 1952, Harry Smith's 'Anthology of American Folk Music' continues to influence folk and rock musicians worldwide. In 1997, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings reissued the Anthology in a 6-CD set, earning GRAMMY awards and gold certification. That same year, concerts and a symposium were held in honor of Smith's work.

I would really appreciate a Harry Smith revival. He was a great artist and mind on every level. It’s a pleasure to hear Sanders who ain’t no dummy himself remembering and getting excited in the telling. Thanks for posting.

Ed Sanders' brilliant investigative poetry is a major contribution to the 1960's legacy & to 21st century perspective on what exactly counter KULTURE is.

This offers some interesting insight to a person I had always heard of, but knew little about... Thanks! As for the Fugs, I remember seeing you and your partners in Peace and thought process provocation many long years ago, have most of the albums, one of yours want your other and Tuli's and have both "Poem From Jail" and "Peace Eye Poems". I learned a lot from your work and am glad to see that you are still at it...

My dad worked at ESP records back in the 60's, back when The Fugs and The Godz were hanging around there too. He has some fun tales of those days. Great video! :)

The Fugs were my first connection to Harry Smith - us "baby beatniks" (as our older siblings in the art department called us) at the University of Nebraska, sitting in a circle, passing a joint of Nebraska ditchweed around, singing along with "Monday Nothing, Tuesday Nothing, Wednesday a lot more Nothing..."

Now, from the little I know of Smith, it's just as likely he is a professional troll as he is an incompetent loudmouth.

In the 1970s, I spent almost every night for 4 years in Harry Smith’s room #731, The Chelsea Hotel. He was a mesmerizing presence whose mystical aura infused all who were privileged to be allowed assembling in his room.
