Great video. Excellent tutorial on building this kit, and these techniques certainly apply to other NASCAR kits. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe a day late and a dollar short, but I've been doing custom paint work on 1:1 vehicles for years and might have a solution to the wrinkling foil. Typically when we shoot clear over sensitive decals or paint, we lock the base layer down with what we call an intercoat clear. Some companies like House of Kolor sell their own intercoat clear mixtures, but I've found using a good fast dry clear like Axalta 7900 (previously Dupont) works great too. Transtar makes a "Jammin Clear" for trimming in door jams and I've had good luck with that as well. Essentially you should be able to use any clear, but the key is to lay down a couple very light mist coats first, letting each one tack up for about 10-15 minutes. After the second coat dries, then you can lay down your wet coats of clear. The misted intercoats won't negatively affect the gloss in the end either. Hope this helps some future project. 😎🤙

MCW, has a semi clear paint, I haven't used it, but I'm doing Bobby Allison's, red/gold Monte, ordered semi clear haven't gotten it yet, intend on using it! I'm amazed that you put tape on within a couple of hours, I let my paint set four 3 or more days before I touch it, maybe I'm paranoid!!

My rule of thumb has always been, primer, color coat, decals, clear coat. Ive tried to stear clear of gloss paints if decals are involved. Could have been polishing compound residue when you applied the decals.

I usually go pledge over my decals with no problem before applying clear coat. It sealed the foil.

I just discovered your channel. I really like it! I’m hoping to see more models being done. I’ve done a bunch of 1/48 bombers, and have recently returned to race cars. I’m a member of the Salvino’s club, and was happy to hear that you are too! I’ve been since the beginning. I’ve got around 100 planes, and well over 100 race cars to build. I pray that I’ll be around long enough to build them all. I really enjoy watching your videos. I’d love to see more! I’m subscribed and have my notifications bell activated 😊

Myself I’d like to see polishing series! I have always sucked at polishing paint! It might help if I guess I stopped gorilla sanding on the piece too! Also, I did a model a few months back, a Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle funny car that the decals wrinkled and bubbled big time after clear coat. I have been lately using Gravity paints 3 part clear coat to clear my models with. It’s an excellent clear with super nice gloss retention. And the stuff is almost run proof too! The final finish is very hard also! Almost like a poly coat. Anyway, I got into a nasty habit of just shooting it thick, because it would like I say not run. But on that particular decal heavy car I should have misted it at first and let that set for a few minutes before laying on any heavier coats. I also believe that I may have not given the decals time to properly set up too.

When it comes to race car decals, i generally polish the paint, apply decals, and then wax the body with a good quality carnuba wax. It helps bring up the paint gloss and adds a bit of gloss to the decals.

I enjoyed the heck outta this video! Wish you would have shown what paint you used that didn't work well for you. I figured for sure the black and silver would not play nice...I was wrong on that. That car is looking great! You could pm me on what paint didn't work for you. The issue with clear...I have heard it works well and I prefer to seal my decals with an overcoat. Rick said something about omni clear you buy autobody supply places... I've also heard of guys using future aka pledge floor wax over them. Be sure you use the product that is a wax and not the one that has cleaner, I have heard horror stories about the one with the cleaner in it. That being said, if you want to guinea pig these ideas and post up videos...I'd be the first to watch them. Sweet video and AWESOME build man!

I`ve had the same issue with non foil decals even using a non hot clear, but the kicker was it was only say three out of the thirty on the project, which makes no logical sense. However my persistent theory is that its residual moisture under the decal that is hiding there. Solution let those suckers sit for a few weeks before clearing over them, so all water has left the building so to speak.

Im wondering if it’s because the foil is very thin that no matter what is used it will react with the foil. I was surprised ti see it reacted to the Tamiya clear. Isn’t that water based? I’m confused.
