I think Pneuma followed by drum cam version would be a great next choice too. The comment from Maynard (singer) regarding standing off to the side is he can see what the musicians are doing, and their sound isn’t flooding his mic.

For some short lore of the band the lead singer is Maynard James Keenan who is now 60 from Ohio before moving to LA in the late 1980s to become an actor. After that not working out he took part in a few Music projects before meeting Adam Jones. Adam Jones who is the lead guitar and is from Illinois and is currently 59, Adam moved to LA to be a movie special effects artist before forming Tool with Maynard in 1991. Prior to officially forming they added the drummer Danny Carry who was a friend and Neighbor to Maynard. Short story is that he covered as their drummer as they looked for one, eventually he practiced so much with them he decided to join. He is turning 63 soon and is from Kansas and is tall at 6’5”. Next was Paul D’Amour who was Tools first bassist who was from LA and wrote the bass lines for their 1st album Undetow and most of their second album AEnima before leaving the band in 1995. The last member and personally my favorite is Justin Chancellor who joined in 1995 and was featured on their 2nd album from 1996. Justin was in the British rock band Peach before joining Tool and is the youngest at 52 as well as he is from London, England. Their albums are 72828 LP (1991), Opiate EP (1992), Undertow (1993), AEnima (1996), Lateralus (2001), 10,000 Days (2006), Fear Inoculum (2019), They have also won 4 Grammies!

As much as I don't want to recommend a live video yet.. the Pnuema drum cam video gives a good sense on how well they perform live and how amazing Danny Carey is! It forces you to hear the drums differently in every song after that. Can't wait to watch your Tool journey unfold!

I agree, this song wouldn't be labeled heavy metal.. but their earliest works, Opiate and Undertow, could be tho.. Side note: MJK was "out front" on stage during the first few tours, which was amazing ro experience. I suggest the Sober Reading Festival live video, but later in you journey, watch some others! As far as "rock opera like".. I'd suggest Invincible and Descending ❤ Edit: Idk how true, but just fyi, other channels have said they have to pause at least once during song or good chance their video will be struck.

Another great reaction. 🌀 Not heavy metal. The genre IS TOOL. There is no one like them. And they are unmatched in music of ANY genre. That’s (one of) the beauty of Tool. They do not fit any mold. In my opinion, Wings for Marie 1&2 is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. I’d loooooove to see a reaction to that song(s). It’s imperative to know the story behind it in advance and read the lyrics first. It’s a haunting journey thru every stage of grief… a song that allows you to feel every emotion associated with loss: the sadness, the despair but also the rage… individually and all at once. An absolutely stunning and heartfelt requiem. Spiral out, gents! KEEP GOING! 🌀

I am totally tuned in for more of your Tool reactions, but be wary of the Eagles. Their legal team makes YT reactions massively difficult from what I have heard from other reactors (yes, I used and adj and an adv). I saw Maynard's other 2 bands plus primus last night at his 60th birthday celebration/short tour, and it was great despite the rain. Your camera man isn't wrong. I have never encountered a band that sounds as close to the album sound when they want to be as Tool. Many musicians today have a tough time pulling that off. I highly recommend seeing them live if you can. It is a special experience and you will get an unbelievable rush from the crowd and everyone's enthusiasm. I think your observations about the singer are spot on for Tool. He has stated, and makes a point of considering his voice as just another instrument in Tool. He isn't trying to be a lead. He is simply part of the talent pool that is Tool, and I think all of them do a good job of letting their instruments breathe and giving one another space. Your camera man also made a great point that his other 2 bands the lead singer is in he is much more of a front man. He isn't afraid of being up front, but knows when to not be. Which I think is a rare understanding. I highly recommend his other bands in this order, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer if you all get around to it. This is the Tool song I most often recommend people start in with. Tool's poly rhythms get more and more complex (not heavy) as their career progressed, and sitting someone down to listen to some of the most recent music first is kind of like throwing them in the deep end. If you are going to do more tool reactions (please do), I recommend Vicarious, The Grudge, 46 and 2, Lateralus, Jambi, or Anema. If you really like drums, Pneuma and then the Vic Furth drum cam of Pneuma is great to actually visualize what the drummer is doing. Though to be fair, you two have a different musical background than most reactors I see. So, I trust your camera man if he is picking the songs for you all, and in that case ignore my suggestions. If you are going to do Lateralus, please consider following it up with a video from Polyphonic's YT channel called "How Tool Used Math to Create "Lateralus"" The song structure is based on a mathematical formula and that really does a good job of showing it. It's something nobody picks up on first listen which is kind of the point. Almost all of Tool's songs on YT have the lyrics in the description as well. Lyrics are a big deal for Tool songs. Most Tool songs have multiple meanings, and are frequently left up to the listener to take what they might from the song. However, this one has a general meaning as well as a specific one. The general meaning is about hypocrisy, the Pot calling the kettle black. At the same time, there is some beef/at least a complaint between Tool and Led Zeppelin. I have already typed enough so I won't go very deep into that since this is going to be long, but will provide the short. Tool is calling Led Zeppelin out for liberally borrowing other musicians' songs and playing them as their own. The Muddy Waters line is a reference to the blues band Muddy Waters and their 1962 song You Need Love (the lines "Eyehole deep in Muddy Waters, You practically raised the dead). Led Zeppelin basically "borrowed" the lyrics from that song for their huge hit Whole Lotta Love. You can YT both songs and see what I mean if you are interested. I love Zeppelin, and they are super talented musicians, but it's hard to deny that they did this with multiple musicians over the years. "When the Levee Breaks" compared to Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy's version of the song by the same name is another example. It's not a Zeppelin song, it's a cover, and Tool covered Zeppelin's version. I recommend that one as well, it's great. Zeppelin is notorious for using the courts to protect their music, and has fought other bands for playing their songs at live concerts. NOT recording them, but just playing them live. Which is perfectly legal. So, Tool is calling them out for liberally "borrowing" from other musicians, but being super aggressive with going after other musicians that try to use Zeppelins music. I hope you continue on the Tool journey. The Tool Army will follow as always. We love to see new people react to Tool. It's like us vicariously seeing ourselves watch again for the first time. I just stumbled across your channel b/c of this Tool song, but good job. Keep up the good work. This is super long, but I hope some of you all read it despite it being a phone book. lol
