The drummer is Danny Carey. And is arguably the best drummer of all time. No bullshit. Welcome to the best, most unique band EVER. They do not fit into any genre. The genre IS TOOL. This song is basically about hypocrisy. Politicians who lock up people for things like smoking weed… but meanwhile they themselves are doing FAR WORSE. The word play, double entendres are thick in this song. Each musician are absolute MASTERS of what they do. Each are totally unique and insanely creative and intelligent. Here for more Tool! Spiral out! Keep going!

"I could listen to this all day bro" Yea, Tool is like that, and it's a spiral of conundrums and paradoxes and puzzles built upon layers of endless flavor and style and pure badassery , with danny behind the drums, i mean this is the guy the greatest of greats in drummers talk about, just holds it all together with his perfect playing, nobody and nothing else in the world will ever exist, we are lucky to even witness their cadence.

You are in for a ride my, friend🌀🤘! The great thing about Tool is that the meaning behind the lyrics can be different for each person that is listening. Yes, there might be a major theme, but the little subtleties can change with each listen. I’ve been listening to them for the last 10 years, but not truly listening until the last 4-5 years. The songs meanings have changed for a me a few times over that time span, and I know they will hit different in the future as well. A few tips for listening to their music: 1) they are amazing live, but listen to the studio recordings first with the lyrics pulled up (or without lyrics, sometimes they distract you from the vibe, 2) Don’t watch the music videos on the first reaction, they will pull you out of the vibe, 3) this is most important one…Have fun! This is an amazing band that has changed my life (and many others) for the better. Other people mentioned the members already, but I’ll give you some context. In their first full Album, Undertow, they have a different bassist (also bass in the musical context is pronounced with a long a sound, not a short a sound like the fish, largemouth bass) than all their other albums. Both are amazing in their own ways, but the first album is definitely a little more gritty because of Paul D’amour’s playing style/bass tone. Justin Chancellor plays bass on the rest and is an absolute beast, just like the rest of the band. Danny Carey (drummer) is objectively one of the best to ever do it. Adam Jones (guitarist) will melt your face off and have you in tears in the same song. Maynard James Kennan (vocalist, among other things, ha) is that amazing voice your hear. You will notice that his voice is not at the front/top of the mix sometimes, and that is purposeful. He voice is an instrument as much as it is the deliverer of lyrics. This sounds impossible, but they genuinely don’t have a bad song…The first album is not as popular as the others but just as good in different ways . Some great songs to get you into the band would be: Useful Idiot and 46 & 2 together , Schism, Sober (live as well), Pneuma (studio first, and then live Danny Carey drum cam), Intermission and Jimmy together, H. , Vicarious, 7empest, Descending, Ænema, The Grudge, Laturalus (which is where you will learn about spiraling out🌀), and the list could go on forever. Keep an open mind and welcome to the Tool Army. Keep Going, Spiral Out🌀🤘!

One of the (many) things that makes Tool so unique is that every instrument gets to shine through. Generally rock showcases the lead guitar and singer while the drums and bass keep the rhythm. The drummer will usually only get to shine in solo during the bridge of the song. Tool really showcases everything all at once. Often if you listen to any given instrument on its own, they are almost each playing a different song. There is an ebb and flow where the instruments seem to separate and then come crashing back together in perfect time only to go their own way again. Maynard's composition is really on a whole different level. And one tip for future Tool songs (you will probably hear this a lot).. DON'T watch the official video for your first listen. Tool videos are something else. They are amazing in their own right but they can easily distract you from what you are hearing. Keep doing what you are doing and watch the lyric videos for your first experience.

I love watching people react to Tool; especially when they are relatively new to the rock genre. MJK is a tremendously gifted poet who treats his voice like a fifth instrument. You’ll notice in other Tool songs that his voice is “back” in the mix instead of sitting on top. One of the fun parts of dissecting their music is knowing there was a reason behind every musical choice they made. The music and lyrics can both be complex, so don’t feel bad if not all of it makes sense at first. You’ll get plenty of suggestions, but here are some more to consider in no particular order: AEnima Stinkfist Parable / Parabola (these go together) 46&2 I’m looking forward to seeing what you react to next! Spiral out 🌀

"Foot in mouth and head up ass, so whatchu talking 'bout. Difficult to dance 'round this one till you pull it out". He's tying the phrases "you put your foot in your mouth" and "you have your head up your ass" together, along with the saying "dance around" (meaning to avoid giving a direct response). The punch line ("difficult to dance 'round this one till you pull it out") is saying that it's hard to dance with your head up your ass and/or your foot in your mouth. Spiral out, man, they dont have a bad song in their entire catalog 🤘🌀

Red Miso is great, Microaggressions is great, Brain Dance is great, Cafo is great, I don't think you'll have many misses with their catalog, the only down-side (kind of) is they don't have a vocalist. If they ever did I'd really love to see them do something wildly different, get an rnb singer like Frank Carter III who used to sing over Ivy Lab's dnb (before they went half-time), maybe even someone similar to Horrace Andy the way Massive Attack incorporated him. Danny Carey is the drummer and is in my opinion the most technically talent and creative drummer alive today. Other songs can be far more complex like "7empest" and "Invincible". Maynard James Keenan is the lead singer of three very different bands which include "A Perfect Circle" and "Puscifer". He doesn't start to write the vocal section until the song is fully flushed out. Then he thinks up a concept that works with the music and arranges the composition to fit. Adam, the Guitarist actually started the band and Justin came along after the first album was complete.

The band members are Maynard James Keenan on vocals, Danny Carey on drums, Justin Chancellor on bass, and Adam Jones on guitar. Maynard also does some keyboard work here and there, but that's a drop in the bucket. This is the Tool song I most often recommend people start in with. Tool's poly rhythms get more and more complex as their career progressed, and sitting someone down to listen to some of the most recent music is kind of like throwing them in the deep end. If you are going to do more tool reactions (please do), I recommend Vicarious, The Grudge, 46 and 2, Lateralus, Jambi, or Anema. If you are going to do Lateralus, please consider following it up with a video from Polyphonic's YT channel called "How Tool Used Math to Create "Lateralus"" The song structure is based on a mathematical formula and that really does a good job of showing it. Something nobody picks up on first listen which is kind of the point. The two combined are a bit long, but are great in one reaction. If you decide to do both and split them up into 2 videos for YT release, please record the explanation vid in the same sitting as watching the original. It will be more fresh that way. Oh, and tool has very few actual videos. I recommend you stick to videos that are either just the album cover or ones like this where the lyrics are at the bottom. Almost all of Tool's songs on YT have the lyrics in the description as well. OK, that's enough here, now about this song. :) Most Tool songs have multiple meanings, and are frequently left up to the listener to take what they might from the song. However, this one has a general meaning as well as a specific one. The general meaning is about hypocrisy, the Pot calling the kettle black. At the same time, there is some beef between Tool and Led Zeppelin. I have already typed enough so I won't go very deep into that since this is going to be long. Tool is calling Led Zeppelin out for liberally borrowing other musicians' songs (if not outright stealing them) and playing them as their own. The Muddy Waters line is a reference to the blues band Muddy Waters and their 1962 song You Need Love (the lines "Eyehole deep in Muddy Waters, You practically raised the dead). Led Zeppelin basically stole the lyrics from that song for their super famous song Whole Lotta Love. You can YT both songs and see what I mean if you are interested. I love Zeppelin, and they are super talented musicians, but it's hard to deny that they did this with multiple musicians over the years. See also their song "When the Levee Breaks" compared to Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy's version of the song by the same name. Zeppelin is notorious for using the courts to protect their music, and has fought other bands for playing their songs at live concerts. NOT recording them, but just playing them live. Which is perfectly legal. So, Tool is calling them out for liberally "sampling" from other musicians, but being super aggressive with going after other musicians that try to use Zeppelins music even legally. I hope you continue on the Tool journey (pause). The Tool Army will follow as always. We love to see new people react to Tool. It's like us vicariously seeing ourselves watch again for the first time. I just stumbled across your channel b/c of this Tool song, but good job. Keep up the good work. This is super long, but I hope some of you all read it. lol

This song was about a judge that was giving out harsh sentences for marijuana. The judge was later found with drugs and begged for leniency. The singer is Maynard James Keenan. The bassist is Justin Chancellor. The guitarist is Adam Jones. The drummer is Danny Carey (nickname is The Octopus). They don't really fall into a single musical category, but I think they are the spiritual successors to King Crimson and Pink Floyd. They are very experimental and love concepts to their albums. I'd check out the song Lateralus or The Grudge if you want to hear similar music to this, but if you want something different that they did, try Intension/Right in Two. They are two songs that go together.

In short 'The Pot' is about the hypocrisy of the courts and government to condemn people for smoking pot when everyone knows they do it to. Almost every line in the song (including the title) has a double meaning. 'The Pot' is literally weed, but it is also a reference to 'the pot calling the kettle black.' 'You must have been high' is saying that the judge must be crazy to think he can get away with this level of hypocrisy, but also literally 'at some point you must have gotten high.' But seriously, almost everything has a double meaning, usually referencing some old cliche. I'd recommend Vicarious or Sober as your next Tool react.

I disagree. That’s way too simplistic of an explanation. Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin had come out and said Tool ripped off their vibe, style, etc and it pissed Maynard off. He’s calling Page a hypocrite because they ripped most of their hits off by rewriting blues songs from artists like Muddy Waters. He actually cites Muddy Waters in the lyrics. At the end he says he can’t blame his comments on being high because he was such a hypocrite. The pot refers to a pot calling a kettle black and not weed. If you listen very closely at the beginning and turn it up, you will hear a pre delay on the vocals where you hear him singing the line faintly before the full vocal comes in. Zeppelin used that effect on some of their songs. The lyrics are brilliant but he’s going after Jimmy Page. He “practically raised the dead” by ripping off their music.

@@stigmajosh you are REALLY reaching. It doesn't need to be a super hidden meaning to be the correct one. It is very clear what the song is about. There are zero references to Jimmy Page or Led Zeppelin. You can maybe say it applies, as it is another form of hypocrisy. But then you could say it is about religion, parents, your little brother... Just anywhere hypocrisy exists. In this case it is specifically about in the courts and the judge, lawyers and jury being just as guilty of drug use as the person being tried. I don't have the source but I have heard on multiple occasions Maynard specifically wrote it after a friend of his was convicted for possession, and then the judge who tried him was later arrested for possession.

@@xbeaker it’s not my theory alone. I heard this from other fans and after applying the lyrics to the situation it seems to match closer in my opinion. Maynard is the type of guy who will tell 5 different stories in interviews for his own amusement. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard him fully discuss song meanings for any of his songs in any project. Some like “Vicarious”, “Judith”, “Schism” are more obvious what the songs are about. In my opinion, “The Pot” is not one of those songs and is up for interpretation. I’ve heard about 4 theories for what it’s about. All I know is there are lyrics in the song that go along with my theory and don’t make sense for yours. But he could have also written the song about hypocrisy in general and cited a few different examples. We may never know for sure.

  • @xbeaker

    @xbeaker

@@stigmajosh What lyrics make sense in yours but not mine? Is it the lines about Kangaroo courts? "Hung the Jury"? "Liar, Lawyer"? Guilt and innocence? You are reaching for literally 1 line "Muddy Waters" and playing 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon to tie it back to Led Zeppelin. Even though the line also makes sense in the context of the courts. It just happens to also be the name of a blues musician. You even said the drugs and courts meaning is "way too simplistic of an explanation" so you agree that it is the more obvious explanation. I have never even heard of this alleged feud between Zeppelin and Tool. Show me that at least to have even a sliver of credibility. This is why conspiracy theories gain traction. People come up with an alternate (incorrect) explanations to accepted facts and latch on to them because they like feeling special because they know the 'secret'. I won't argue it further. If you want to believe it is about Led Zeppelin, so be it. You willfully misunderstanding it is no skin off my back. :)

This song is about hypocrisy. There's a ton of metaphors and cryptic meanings in these lyrics. Robbing the grave to snow the craddle means to bring up an old issue to blur the legitamacy of a current problem. The reason for them writing this was the drummer had a friend driving through Arizona and got pulled over. When they searched his car, they found a roach in his car. He came face to face with one of America's most anti-marijuana judges. He ended up getting 2 years. A short time later, the same judge was caught in a motel room with 2 hookers, meth and heroin. So who are you to wave your finger, you lying lawyer.

As much as I love tool and this song, it's not their best and it's well overplayed (respectfully)

The Democratic party so far has been considered to be a kangaroo court. And also hypocritical so this song sorta applies in that point of view lol

Hey! As you dive in, TOOL IS DIFFERENT. Their music videos make no sense on first watch. They rarely have a 1:1 relationship with the song. Plus, they're censored. Really sucks. Avoid em. Keep up with the lyric videos. You can spend hours or months unpacking lines and what the songs are about. Lyric videos or audio is great because Tool doesn't cheat by mixing the vocals above the instruments. They're an equal part of the band, even when he whispers. Only forward when the song demands it-the music isn’t a separate element. Even when they play live Maynard, the singer, is staged in the back on a platform near the drummer (GOAT). Bass and guitar are staged in the front. Glad you're intrigued. This will be your new fave band. Try Forty Six and 2 next.

Look up kangaroo court. I think Maynard is talking about the hypocrisy of the system. One of my favorite Tool songs and definitely not the best.

This song is about hypocrisy, Maynard the lyricist, uses a double entendre with the line must have been high when you pissed all over my black kettle which the actual saying is the pot calling the kettle black which means the person pointing the finger is guilty of the same thing.. making them a hypocrite.

Brother, I hope you never know the meaning of this song.... Because some of us are magnets for them... and usually it doesn't come out until you're too far in to call it quits.

There’s some cognitive thinking that must be approached going forward into Tool songs.
