    TOOL isn’t a band!!! It is an EXPERIENCE!!! That’s why you can’t put your finger on it. In the early days you couldn’t find lyrics. Maynard (the singer) said don’t let me do your thinking for you. Let the music you hear tell you what emotion or vision you have. Not me.

    I think a lot of that “different” feel Tool has is because of how they compose songs. They use a lot of weird time signatures and more unique song structures. They also let every instrument be heard, and they do a great job of working together as a band. Maynard also comes up with some cool vocal melodies that blend right in with the song, almost like he’s another instrument.

    awd man The Fibonacci sequence is only the basis for one of their songs, Lateralus, but you’re right, they do incorporate a lot of mathematical concepts into their songs. For instance, on “Triad” a lot of the rhythms and time signatures revolve around the number three, and there are also only three instruments used as Maynard doesn’t sing.

    The fact that 4 such unique musicians coincidentally found each other, and (sometimes sooner than later) decided to create such pure art, never giving a single shit about what anyone would pay money to hear or have it played on the radio 10 times in a day, chopped into digestible 2-3 minute snacks, is indescribable to me. Each one of them so creative and unique at their craft, Danny Carey with those insane rythms and tribal sounds, Adam Jones with the crazy effects and different string-pulling techniques, as in the Jambi intro, Justin Chancellor also using some awesome effects and pedals, and just over all amazing basslines (Reflection, Schism, H., Jambi...), harmonizing so amazingly with the Guitar of Adam Jones, to the beats of the absolute Monster that Carey is, topped of with a voice that can sing you into a high with some ancient fckn singing, like in Parabol, and screams that wake you up from the Dead (The Grudge, H., Tick & Leeches, Third Eye.....). And then they converted all of that shit into Music, where basically every track is a trip, just taking you along for a ride, building and building until it explodes and jizzes into a musical climax thats just so one of a kind. Nothing comes even close, i'm gonna go pry open my third eye now.

    Been a fan since 93 when I first heard sober. I still discover new things (visions, revelations, emotions) every single time I listen to this band. Tool transends music, the one thing I feel about this band that I've never felt from anyone else, no matter the genre, is that I can feel so much intellect, emotion, spirituality in the presentation of every chord of the instruments to every note of Maynard's voice and I think...Is he this heavily vested, or is he trying to get me this heavily vested? Is he a mad evil genius trying to fuck with my emotions or is he an emotional guy with an ingenious approach....he did say it's not his job to tell you how to feel...the music will.

    Whenever I hear Tool I always come away somehow feeling slightly smarter, like I’m in on something that’s intelligent and creative...and I feel smarter for getting it. I feel like a bit of a tool (arf arf)for writing this....but it’s true.

    Steven Young I agree, the best classical and Tool songs avoid the standard pop song structure; intro-verse-chorus- verse-chorus- bridge-chorus-end and just move along naturally morphing from one sound to the next until the song is done and so are not predictable keeping you thinking.

    I think the others placed higher on billboard, but Aenima was their first Grammy winner, and the song that introduced them to the masses; their defining release. It was fucking EVERYWHERE that year. They’re all almost perfect songs, though. After years away from Metal, I’m glad I’m rediscovering one of my favorite bands, especially through the eyes of the uninitiated.

    Actually (not debating your opinion) but Sober was played on the mainstream radio way before Aenima. As far as the most famous, the song Lateralus is probably #1, since it has been rated as the #1 Rock song (ever) by a few publications. It's like picking #1, #1a, #1b all the way to #1z.

    the word you need is "depth", this song is beautifully constructed! theirs like 7 different guitar riffs, 7 different bass riffs, drums are prime and vocally he keeps bring you back in with a different variation of tone with every chorus and verses. Luke Brian wishes he could have this much talent!, this is real rock and roll from the heart. i love this song

    You are, by far, the best reactor on KZread. Love that you are checking out all types of music. I could spend days recommending hiphop from the 90's you should check out, but you should also check out some blues. Check out Chris Stapleton "I was wrong". It's got a blues vibe to it and the vocals are incredible. It will be a nice way to ease into some blues music and a guitar lover will dig it.

    If u see these guys in concert , u most likely wont see the singer ( Maynard James Keenan) . He sings from the back of the stage... mostly in the dark. In the early days , he sang front man... but he recently hes hidden in the back of the band, in the dark. Sometimes wearing riot gear

  • @timgreen7800
    @timgreen78005 жыл бұрын

    You know what makes TOOL so great, so unique? Maynard has a voice that is more than vocals. His voice is truly an instrument. So instead of someone singing lyrics of a song he is playing an instrument. That and he is a lyrical genius. Poetry set to really good ( also unique ) music. A lot of meaning and heart. Songs are so much better when the singer truly feels what they are singing when it not just some lyrics or a story but instead an experience shared with the listener.

    your music appreciation and life has been changed like so many of us. From now on, when you listen to new music, of any genre, you will measure it against the Tool scale. "did it make me feel like tool made me feel the first time? did it give me goosebumps like Tool did? did it move me? did it made me clap? did it made me feel satisfied while at the same time making me thirsty for more?" Rap, rock, R&B, no matter, you will ask yourself those questions.
