The only problem is that they are responsible for many of the greatest pieces. How to rate them. How to even place them into the normal categorisation of things. They are Tool. And they dip into every surrounding style of music, to shit on the heads of the (often great) artists on those guy's home turf. It's total piss-taking. I reckon Maynard farts more complex material than your average 'pop star'

There's a whole cycle of songs dedicated to Maynard's relationship with his mother, who was paralyzed for 27 years (about 10,000 days) until she died. She never lost her faith in her god through it, and Maynard struggled with understanding how she could follow a god that would do that to her.

Aesir Asgard that's where you're sorely wrong. God didn't plan her suffering.... suffering comes from OUR choices...not God's will. in a child’s eyes, a mother is a goddess... she can be glorious or terrible, benevolent or filled with wrath, but she commands love either way... i am convinced that this is the greatest power in the universe... because god could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers... and sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws...

Maynard actually regretted releasing Wings for Marie 1 and 2. He said in an interview “I’ll never make that mistake again. It just took too much out of me - too much emotionally, mentally, physically - all those manifestations. Those songs were exploited and misconstrued, people were flippant and dismissive. I won’t be doing that anymore. And technically, ‘Wings’ is very difficult to pull off. If any one of us is off, it falls apart and makes that thing tragic, and that’s not a good song for me to have fall apart. It’s just too personal.” We should be thankful that he let us in that close to something that is extremely personal for him.

DUUUDE so did I. I am not the type to cry in movies or for anything really, but this song always seems to get me to that point. Maybe its because my mother wasted away, and I remember being in the hospital with everything not natural. The lyrics day light dims leaving cold fluorescents is genius in its word play, because with that sentence alone it creates a picture in your mind. Its also a play on natural light being her at her best and cold fluorescents being her corpse (mechanical, material but artificial). It can be taken metaphorically or literally.

You're absolutely right Preston, Tool is on another level. I don't know why I didn't listen to more of them years ago but this song was breathtakingly beautiful. What an homage to his Mom, I'm over here sobbing like a baby and thinking of my Mom. This was the first time I've heard this song too and I'm just overwhelmed with emotion. I feel this song to my bones, talkin bout the funeral with phony family members actin like they give a shit, I can relate to that. Talking about how she was his light in this world, I've said that about my Mom a million times and how hard it was to see her in the cold fluorescent lights which I'm assuming was in the hospital, I can relate to that to since my Mom passed away in the hospital and I was right there with her and how she suffered so long in hell and now it was her time for her wings. Possibly things in her life or a prolonged illness, ughh this song really got to me. Sorry for the long comment but I just had to share what I was feeling.

Judith by A Perfect Circle displays his anger with his mother's illness. And anger toward his mother's faith in God, questioning how God could have possibly allowed one of his faithful servants to fall into such disrepair. I can relate to his anger, but I can also relate to his reconciliation with the notion that his mother remained faithful and persistently believed in God despite being broken; the true sign of faith. I like that in Wings for Marie Part 2, Maynard seemed to have come to terms with his mother's faith in God, and possibly even God himself.

Tool is the result of what happens when artists stick to their integrity and principles. Taking the time, effort, and passion required to craft Something Beautiful. Bad thing is that a lot of other bands are just going to sound terrible. the good thing is that you'll be able to listen to them for the rest of your life. Somehow their songs and lyrics have an ambiguous quality that allows then to achieve something truly unique. As I grow older I find that they mean something a little different to me each time, and I am able to find new inspiration from them.

maynard lets the band make the songs he calls them the "sounds" he writes lyrics once all the "sounds" are complete. and writes each songs lyrics specifically for that song. doesn't come in with any material before hearing the finished sounds. The Band meticulously builds these masterpieces, then Maynard takes em home! definetely watch the lyric video with explanation for 46 & 2. very informative.

Sometimes I think Tool must be aware of a musical genre on a different world that none of the rest of us know about. That must be how they are influenced and come up with their music. Either that or they are individual musical geniuses that we should all thank our lucky stars got together in the first place.

Since you love Maynard's lyrics, you should definitely check out /react to his 2 other bands: A Perfect Circle & Puscifer! Jimmy (from Tool's Ænima album) was a song written about his mom while she was still alive, as well as Judith by A Perfect Circle. Wings For Marie & 10,000 Days (Wings pt.2) were written around the time of her passing (after 27 yrs in the Fire). Then, in Puscifer, he wrote another song about spreading her ashes over one of the slopes of his vineyard titled Horizons. He once stated that, "Now she can travel the world and meet new and exciting people everywhere she goes..." Love watching you make this journey bro, keep it going!!!

Better than Wings for Marie? Not many. But..... I will suggest to you "The Holy Trinity". Off of the Lateralus album, in sequence, Disposition-Reflection-Triad. It may not be better than Wings, but it's up there. Might be best if you listen to The Grudge first from that album. Will make the whole thing come together. It's all about growth, becoming something greater than you once were. If you need reference for what he was, listen to Opiate and Undertow. What he becomes is what you just heard in Wings. Hopefully this makes sense. 46 & 2 was all about the transformation. Enjoy listening.
