Good to hear your personal experiences with these reels. One thing worth mentioning is that the Saragosa actually has excellent water proofing and theoretically actually had the best water proofing of the 3. It’s IPx 8 rated compared to IPX 6 for the slammer.

From my understanding it’s IPX8 water resistant body and water resistant drag, when I spoke to the shimano rep he told me there is no water proofing/sealing for the main gears. I may be wrong. I’ll try and reach out to shimano to confirm.

The shimano Saragossa body has an IPX8 rating, but in terms of the slammer both the body and spool have IPX6 ratings. Shimano claimed an X-protect on the drag system but won’t give an IPX rating to back it up.

You left a few things out about the Slammer. They come with an extra foam power knob and the gears both are brass. The shaft is titanium, others not. A big difference!

I’m going to do a part 2 after all the reels see heavy work loads. I want to wait a couple months. The internals of the slammer are over built. But the size to weight given the size to weight ratio.

I had both reels and the slammer is definitely a workhorse but after landing 1 yellowtail jack around 15 lbs on it the reel started to makes a weird noise which I can't quite describe and you can actually see the vibration in the spool. However, I landed a estimated 280-300 lb black seabass on my Daiwa Saltist MQ14000 and it has much more cranking torque than the slammer. It is also much much smoother, and much lighter, and casts a lot further than the Slammer. And after landing the fish the saltist still felt like it was brand new out of the box reel. After that I sold the Slammer with zero regrets. It's just superior over the slammer in my opinion. The bright side is that I actually sold it for more than what I paid for it!

Penn has a titanium shaft, the others don't. The daiwa has zinc gears and a bushing for the line roller. Penn separates there series 4500, 5500 half because they distinguish there saltwater series, while the non-saltwater series is 2000, 3000 and so on. Between the 3 Shimano is a superior reel! IPX8 rating, the line barring has seals and a roller barring. Penn is the best in service it yourself, Shimano 2nd and last the daiwa. The daiwa with the zinc gears in a $300 reel just blows my mind, the cheapest by far.

Fishing all of the reels I believe it comes down to personal opinion. All the reels are sealed to a good standard. When I reached out to Shimano I was told the drag system was not sealed with the IPX8 rating. I have had no issues with any of the reels. I will say I’m most impressed with the power from the Penn slammer. Thank you for the input.
