Salomon Dancehaul Snowboard Review

Спорт

More info: snowboardrobot.com/snowboard-...
The Salomon Dancehaul is a new one this season, and might be one of the most fun boards overall that I have ridden.
I originally got to demo this board early this year, and it suited my riding enough that I bought it when it came into Australia.
It is a volume shift board, which means that you ride it shorter than normal, and the extra width makes up for the shorter length. I am 6 foot tall, 155 lbs and I demoed (then bought) the 147cm model.
It has a tapered directional shape, which means that the nose is 12mm wider than the tail. It has the Rock Out Camber profile, which is probably Salomon's most popular profile - it is used on the Villain, Sleepwalker, Assassin, Assassin Pro, Sickstick, Craft, Gypsy and Wonder. It is a mix of the good parts of camber, with a bit of looseness and float with the rocker sections.
I like boards that can do it all, and this was a nice surprise. It is a solid board on groomers, floats without effort in even heavier powder, and is not bad in the park.

    Amazing amazing review thank you 🙏 I’m spending the season in Japan and deciding on my daily ride … I am female, 5ft8 and 56kg (so rather tall and skinny) and am seriously considering the dancehaul as I still want to be able to ride park and I like playful boards rather than stiff chargers. Having a 143cm for DEEP Japanese snow sounds crazy 😝 would you use the DH your main ride in Japan?

    Hey mate great review!!!! From your reviews I’m about to get either the capita mercury or the Salomon dancehaul, i want/need a allmountain board that can do it all as easy as possible, will be my only board. I ride usually groomers, a few laps to the park (just rails and boxes, cause I’m afraid of getting hurt) small kickers., and if we get lucky down here will love to handle pow and off piste terrain. So a mix of everything, I’m about you size, a bit shorter at 1.8mts , 68 kg, 10.5 boot size. Which board would you recommend me ??? Thanks

    Hey great review! I was actually on the fence about the 152, but after your review I’m considering the 147. I’m 5’10”, 8.5 US boot size and 165lbs. I generally love to carve aggressively, but I’m looking at the dancehaul for that nimble maneuverability to hit moguls and glades with. Also looking at this board to have some fun with, add some flare and surfing-like carves with it, hence the shorter size. But when it comes to aggressive deep carves, I’m also hoping to have some of that with this board. So would you recommend the 147, or should I stick with the 152?

  • @SnowboardRobot

    @SnowboardRobot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! That is a tough one, you definitely have tons of wiggle room with 8.5s, so either is an option. Shorter 147 will definitely be a whole lot surfier, but that decent step up in width on the 152 will let you carve harder. Even if you went with the 152, it still is a small board with a small sidecut, so it will be way different from any regular board.

    Thanks! Yeah I think that it is a good mix, that sits somewhere in the middle between the Warpig and Superpig. Much more fun and less effort to ride than the Superpig, I think the Dancehaul would easily win in most situations - except if you ride super hard and really need the very stiff tail that the Superpig has. Definitely, if I can get hold of another Superpig this season I will make a video comparing them.

  • @SnowboardRobot

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! I haven't ridden the Party Platter yet, though its specs make it seem very similar, and a notch stiffer as well. I don't think I could have gone for the 143, the waist is too small, I think I am closer to the higher limit on the 147 for my weight/boots. I would recommend the 147 for you as well, no matter if your weight fluctuates you'll still be nicely within the weight range. It will be the best balance for size 9 boots as well, wide enough to let you carve hard but without having a slow edge to edge feel.

    How would you compare this with the Ride Superpig? I have a ride mtn pig for hard-charging days and bombing groomers. Thanks for the great review!

  • @SnowboardRobot

    It sounds like it might be a good addition for you, it is a million times more playful and flexible than the Superpig. You might find that the softer tail might take some getting used to, especially seeing that you would be riding it in a smaller size, but it isn't a huge change, and overall it makes so much terrain fun that I think it is worth it.

    @SnowboardRobot

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Even though it sounds short I would still consider the 147 as an option - it easily has enough width for your boots. The advantage of the 152 would be the extra width if you like to carve hard on groomers, but you might find that the 147 is a bit easier to move and spin around in the park. No matter what size you choose, either would be fun. The Asymulator is a good board as well, but very standard and no where near as fun as I found the Dancehaul.

  • @SnowboardRobot

    A whole lot of Salomon boards use the same profile and materials as the Dancehaul, so the Villain, Assassin (technically not a true twin but you wouldn't notice) and Sleepwalker would be good options. The Sleepwalker will be the softest and cheapest, with the Villain being a fancier upgraded park board, and the Assassin as an all-mountain.

    Thanks! It isn't that stiff, so if you were riding nice steep/deep powder it has a nice feel, but if the terrain gets a bit more serious I found that the tail and shorter length made it a bit harder to ride. Although I haven't ridden it, the K2 Party Platter has some similar specs/dimensions, but with a stiffer flex.

  • @SnowboardRobot

    @SnowboardRobot

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think that the Superpig might be a bit much, it is pretty full on, especially from a flat/rocker board. You can't go wrong with both the Dancehaul or Mercury (the two boards I haven't wanted to sell on). The Dancehaul is easily the softer of the two, but for most riding I think it will still have plenty of support. The Mercury does feel stiffer especially when it is new, so while the pop will be really good, it might not be playful enough until you really get used to it.

    Thanks for the review. Such a nice looking board. How is carving for you with your 9.5 boots? I have similar stats as you (160-165lbs, size 9.5 boots) and need to choose between the 147 and the 152. Can you eurocarve with the 147 or is it to narrow for that? I want the board to perform well everywere since it would be my daily driver. Main focus is on powder (if its available) and carving on groomers. The 147 will be more agile which would be nice but what about float and carving? Thanks for the answer!

  • @SnowboardRobot

    @SnowboardRobot

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Carving was fine, the 147 has a waist of 255mm, which is just about the same as my 157cm Mercury and 154cm Outsiders, so I didn't get any problems at all with my boots. It did take me a while to work out if I wanted to be on the 147 (that I demoed much earlier in the year) or jump up to the 152 - but I do like that the 147 is very smooth and fast edge to edge, but easy to move around with its short length. You could carve pretty deep on the 147, but seeing you want to focus on powder and carving, the 152 will probably be the better choice. The extra 9mm of width will give you more float, and you'll be able to carve deeper.

    Interested to know how you think the Dancehaul (and Dancehaul Pro if you have experience) with few other boards I'm considering. I'm 5'11", 175 lbs with size 11 Adidas boots. Mostly all-mountain and freeride, not much time in the park, advanced rider. Want a board that holds up at speed but also nimble and quick to throw around in the trees. Do like to ride some switch so want it to be decent, but interested in something more directional than a straight twin. I've been considering Dancehaul (and Pro), Korua Transition Finder and Otto, Ride Superpig, Capita Mercury, and Jones Stratos. And any others you think would be better? Thanks!

  • @SnowboardRobot

    Although all those boards have their good positives, the Stratos will do everything you wanted with the least downsides, with the Otto a decent second. Dancehaul (not pro) is fun and easy to move around, but a bit soft to handle fast riding comfortably. Tranny Finder is a bit wide for me to call it quick and nimble, though it is very stable. Same thing with the Superpig. Mercury is a great board, but not very directional - a good option if you want something lighter than the Stratos or Otto which are both on the heavier side.

    Thanks! I haven't ridden the Orca for long enough to give it a good comparison, but I will do a good review on it this season at some point. The Dancehaul is quick and easy to turn in tight trees, but any board that has a short length and taper would do well there as well. The biggest difference between the Orca bit.ly/2G0KQK7 and Dancehaul other than the price is the camber - Orca has rocker between your feet, while the Dancehaul has camber (which I prefer, on any style board). Technically, with the Orca having rocker between your feet, as well as being directional and tapered it should float easily - it just isn't the style I prefer. You could ride both the 147 or 152 in the Dancehaul, it would depend a little on what terrain you would want to ride. The wider waist on the 152 will give it a bit more float in deeper snow, but the 147 will also turn a bit quicker. Depending on the terrain you like to ride most might help make a choice.

    Thank you very much for this excellent review ! I am very interested in the Dancehaul which seems to be an excellent playful option to get back to snowboarding after a way too long break skiing with the kids. But I really don't know which size would be the best because I am tall (192 cm) and light (69 kg), which would rather make me choose the 152 I suppose. But I have US boots size 13, which would lead me to take the 157 to gain a little more in width. The 147 is given for 60-85 kg (255 mm wide), the 152 for 70-90 kg (264 mm wide) and the 157 for 70-105 kg (269 mm wide). Thank you in advance for your help :o) And how would you compare the Dancehaul with the Nitro Team, which is the second option that would interest me and that you have also tested ? I am looking for a playful and tolerant all mountain board, not in the idea of surfing aggressively.

  • @SnowboardRobot

    @SnowboardRobot

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! I don't think you can go wrong with the Dancehaul, at least for me it was a fun board straight away, that I like more each time I rode it. The 152 will be plenty, even for size 13s - the 152cm has a waist width of 264mm which is plenty of width for those boots, and I think you would be trading away some of the fun turning/easy to move around size if you went for the 157. I did really like the Nitro Team as well, and although it is a solid all-mountain board, it doesn't have anywhere near the same playful feel as the Dancehaul. If you like stiffer camber skis, or like the feel of a full camber board, then it is a good choice, but it sounds like the Dancehaul will be more fun overall.

    I haven't ridden the Yes boards so I can't give a good recommendation on those, but I would probably narrow it down to the Frontier and the Dancehaul. You might as well have a directional board, they will turn nicely and ride a bit better when there is soft snow around. The Dancehaul to me was really fun because it turns so quickly and easily, and it is fairly soft and easy to move around. The Frontier is a bit closer to a regular board, it rides really nicely on all terrain. Either would be good, but you probably would have more fun on the Dancehaul.

  • @SnowboardRobot

    @SnowboardRobot

    I actually liked the Fusion quite a lot, but I had more fun on the Dancehaul. The regular length of the Fusion and the stiffer tail made it easier to ride more aggressively, so you can put a ton of weight on the tail and it will still hold up, especially on bigger drops. The wider width and little bit of extra taper makes it a bit easier to get further over on a carve on the Dancehaul, but its not a major change.
