SALOMON TAKES AIM AT THE LIB TECH ORCA | Dancehaul Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Salomon Dancehaul Review. I've been snowboarding the Salomon Dancehaul for a couple of days on the 2Alpes Glacier this summer. I'm a big fan of volume shifted snowboards and the Salomon Dancehaul immediately appealed to me. It is definitely Salomon doing their best at muscling in on the success of Travis Rice's Lib Tech Orca. This is a board I've wanted to try for a while but its mega expensive and often difficult to get in Europe, so I've gone for Salomon's version instead! Let me know what you think of the Dancehaul, and if you have any questions, just drop them in the comments down below!

    This is a really good review. I'm a shop guy, with a pretty decent knowledge of the current trends and tech in the industry. You dropped a lot of facts in this vid. You even mentioned the reason why the Orca became so big... that Travis Rice vid with him dropping pillows in Japan.... insane.... After that everyone wanted it... and after that, every company has tried to make their own versions.... I'm about to pick up a Dancehaul myself, so have been looking for reviews on it... You knocked this one out of the park. Thank you for your detailed take on this board. You have a new subscriber.

    Thanks Ashley, I appreciate the comment! You'll love the board, I still haven't been able to ride it as much as I would have liked, all the lifts here in France are still shut. The only thing that has changed since I reviewed it is that I'm actually finding it is quite good on rails now too, I've been using it on a DIY rail setup and actually really like it, it just took a little bit of getting used to!

This will be for next season and buying now while discounting is available is always a good idea. I think Salomon will be making a 154 in the dancehall for 23/24 so this could be a better option for my 90kg weight. Any info from you guys would be awesome. 😎 Thanks in advance

    Looks like the Solomon Dancehaul is awesome board for my kind of riding, ie, charging the pistes, I leave the park stuff to the younger riders! The board graphics are great too not too in your face, understated and retro. I decided to move on from my Solomon Craft and recently got hold of the Jones Frontier (158W). Tried it out in the snowdome, way stiffer than the Solomon, can't wait to try in out on the mountains....just hoping this COVID19 situation doesn't stop me from going to the Alps next winter! Yeah definitely going to be a good on mountain board, I may even test it at Hemel Hempstead if I'm able to get back to the UK at all this October! 😂 Regarding this winter, at present I think ski resorts will be relatively normal just with the caveat of compulsory masks on lifts. I feel like the main issue will be the travel out here, depending if quarantines are still in place. Also, many tour operators such as crystal or neilson have dropped a large number of their chalets and hotels, so you may need to book all the aspects of the holiday independently. And hopefully there's going to be lots of snow! 🤞

I’m 5’10” and about 75kg. It seems like the 147 is the recommended size, but I love my aggressive riding and the aggressive carving (trying to learn the eurocarve). Should I size up to the 152 or stay with the 147? How different do you think the maneuverability will be?

    Great vid, more reviews! I definitely need to jump on that goldie. For the sake of keeping the facts straight, Capita Slush Slasher (flat), Rossi Sushi (camrock) or Yes Optimistic (after the revamp, camrock then camber) were the ones that pushed the directional freeride/powder volume shifted hype long before the Orca.

  • @malcolmmoore

    @malcolmmoore

    Yeah true but that didn't fit in with my narrative so much! 😂 But aside from maybe the yes optimistic I dont feel like these are really boards that you'd want to take down big mountain lines, so although they're good in powder they're not really for big mountain free riding. Whereas I feel like this board and the orca would be comfortable charging steep couloirs. I'm just imagining taking the slush slasher down something like that! 😂

I love my Simple Pleasures on powder days and it does good carving on groomers, but I feel like I want a board with a bit more bite and better carving on groomed runs. Do you think the Dancehall is enough of an upgrade over my K2 on piste to make it worth buy a secons board in the same category? Or do you have a recommendation for a purely on piste carving board? Thanks Yawnz! Yeah I've got to say I was loving the feeling of camber here, it's actually been a few years since I've been on a normal cambered board and it just felt great. I'd become accustomed to pushing my knees out wider to help translate my weight across the entire board on the warpig, but this you can just stay centered and the camber does alot of the work for you, plus the bounce out of turns is so rewarding!

  • @malcolmmoore

    @malcolmmoore

    3 жыл бұрын

    Basically they're both great but there's a few differences. Most importantly is actually durability, the topsheet on the ride warpig delaminates really easily. It has happened to my board and I've seen it happen to a bunch of other peoples too. Whilst it doesn't affect the ride so much it's pretty annoying. After thinking about that basically the dancehaul has the edge in powder for sure, and whilst it isn't necessarily better at carving I would say it is a little more fun. The warpig is better at riding switch and in the park. However they can both do everything pretty well!

After going down the research hole of the Dancehaul and not being able to get one last year I know have the 157 and 152 in plastic starting at me in my garage. I have not found any shop that carries it as a rental to be able t demo it. I am 6’2” (188)cm and. 175lbs (81)kg. Size 10.5US boot. I ride northern MN, mostly hard pack and make a few trips to CO or UT each year. Ride park very little just small features chasing the kids. Still love deep powder in upper bowls. Have you tried out a Superpig? What are your thoughts? Having ridden the The Warpig, Superpig, Orca and Dancehall, i would not even put the Orca in the same ballpark as the rest of them, it was mediocre at everything i tried on it, it was ok. All the other boards you have mentioned here are special or excel in some way, but the Orca turned out to be a beacon of overhyped mediocrity. More reviews please, love this format.

I am 70kg (155lbs), 176 cm (5 feet 9.3 inches), size 9 US (8 uk). I would classify myself as an intermediate rider. I rarely ride switch due to a knee injury, but I do like to hit the park and do basic rails. I'm mostly a groomer rider through. I don't like a true camber board due to it being too catchy. I'm looking at getting the 147cm. Do you think this would be a good fit for my size and riding style in your proffesional opinion? Thank you and keep up the great content.

    What size board do you normally ride? I found you dont need to size down on this board as much as you do for other volume shifted boards for instance I normally ride a 160 in a standard all mountain board, on my ride warpig I rode a 154, whereas on this I have the 157. I felt like alot of the length was contained within the big nose therefore it didn't actually feel all that different on piste. I'm sure the 147 will be fine but you could probably go up to the 152 as well. Unless you are really looking for a super small board I wouldn't size down too much!

    Hey Malcolm, I’m debating between the 52 Dancehaul and the evo exclusive Dancehaul Pro. I understand the pro is about 20% stiffer. Based on your experience with the regular Dancehaul and having the “perfect flex”, do you anticipate the moderate increase in stiffness to have significant effect on the edge hold, carving, general playfulness, etc?

  • @malcolmmoore

    @malcolmmoore

    2 жыл бұрын

    The added stiffness will improve it at high speeds and when charging through choppy terrain. It will probably have better edge hold too, but it will lose some of the powder butter ability and general playfulness! If you charge fast alot I would go for the stiffer one, if you mess around I bit more I would go for the regular one!

I am intrigued by the smaller size for more agility on piste and in the trees but the float in powder will be better on the bigger one...

  • @malcolmmoore

    Yeah you've summed it up pretty well yourself there! The bigger will have better float but slightly less agile. I'm +18 -12. I have ridden the first call and it's basically the sick stick but with slightly cheaper base and construction. I have been looking forward to a shorter board that can handle just a bit of everything, and am stuck between the Dancehaul or the Warpig. I don't do a lot of rails these days, but like buttering, tricking off everything I can, and technical tree runs, especially in pow. You say the Warpig is stronger switch and in the park. Is there an area where you'd say the Dancehaul really outshines the Warpig?

  • @malcolmmoore

    @malcolmmoore

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Although I haven't yet ridden the dancehaul in powder I think that will be the main area it will be better than the warpig. Aside from that it's mostly just the different feeling of having camber to pop you out of your turns. The warpig by no means has bad edge hold, and it carves great, it's just a different feeling. A pretty good compromise between the two is the K2 party platter. This board is super fun, it's a bit softer than the warpig so butters a bit easier, but is not as strong carving, however I would say it's slightly better than the warpig off piste! So many options, hope this helps!

    I haven't actually ridden the orca so I cant say for certain but I reckon the only area in which the orca wins is on ice due to the magnetraction... I would say go for the 157, that's what I'm on and you're a little bigger than me. If you really want something for riding tight trees the 152 will work, but seeing as you're in Switzerland I reckon you don't spend too much time in the trees, unless we get a low snow line!

    It's not as good as magnetraction edges or anything like that, the sidecut is just a standard sidecut. However the camber does a good job of applying pressure along the whole edge. It's not bad at all but if you're on the east coast or ride somewhere with loads of ice it might not be the best!

    Hey Liam, You are right in the middle but I would probably lean towards the 157, but if you want a more nimble tree board you could definitely drop to the 152. With covid keeping resorts shut here last season I still haven't really ridden this board much. I'm actually moving into the amplid dada for this season, you can see that here, (this is an Affiliate link btw but it is a decent Board!) www.amplid.com/?sPartner=MalcolmM However this board is much more similar to something like the ride warpig. I've been liking the look of the gnu banked country this season too which although not a volume shifted board, looks to kind of offer a similar but probably more aggressive ride than the dancehaul... so many options, but I guess back to your original question, for more of a mucking around or tree board, the 152, for more of a piste carving board, and big open faces go for the 157!

    The warpig is a better all rounder board, better in the park, switch, and still really good at carving. The construction they use on the topsheet (topless construction) is terrible and both warpigs I have had began to delaminate badly after about 1 month. One time they replaced the board on warranty the second time they didn't... The dancehaul is better in powder, and whilst the edge hold is probably the same as the warpig, it feels more fun to carve thanks to the camber. It is a little softer than the warpig too.

    @@bbolanda18 it's ok it's not amazing on ice, magnetraction is the best for ice, but I find it annoying in pretty much every other circumstance. Its grabby in wet snow, and doesn't give a smooth feel when carving. So it's a trade off! the dancehaul is primarily a powder board though, so if you're not going to ride much powder it might not be the best option...

    As for multiple boards yeah I have a few. My new one for this season is the amplid dada. www.amplid.com/?sPartner=MalcolmM It's another volume shifted one, I tested it this summer and loved it. I also rode the souly grail and killswitch from amplid too. The souly grail was great but a bit too directional for me, and the killswitch was cool, but not as fun as the dada. I'm always intrigued by new shapes though, the gnu banked country for this season looks cool. I've always wanted to try the yes 420, but I think I would be better off somewhere that gets a bit more powder than Europe! Just get as many boards as you can! The good news is that there's not many bad boards these days so just pick something that you think looks fun!

    Hmmmm that's a slightly tricky one. I think unless you're planning on hitting the gym and bulking up you should probably go for the 152. Although it has a thinner waist your feet will be wider on the sidecut, therefore on a wider part of the board, so it still should be fine!

I‘m 186cm tall and weigh about 86kg. I once had the Assassin 163W and i really liked it‘s flotation, hated it on spins, quick 180s tho. Since a while i‘m on the Huck knife 158w and i love it! Its perfect. So i‘m thinking the 157 (also salomons biggest board, same as the assassin) could be a little to big for what i like to ride. On the other hand i‘m in the alps and want it to perform good in pow and steep lines as well. Please help xD

    I would go 157, I normally ride a 160 or 159 so thought maybe I should downsize more. But for me the 157 actually feels right. Although they say this is a volume shifted board it doesn't feel like the Ride Warpig or the K2 Party which you can size down alot more on. I feel like alot of this boards length is contained in the nose, which you aren't really aware of on the piste, but will just help you in the pow. Sorry i took a while to get there with the answer, haha, and hope you're somewhere in the alps where the lifts are running!
