Sailing with 100 dolphins!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

On our return leg of a 2 week sailing trip we were surrounded by a huge shoal of White Beaked Dolphins. This was in the North Sea from 4am to 5:10am one morning. We were approximately 80 nautical miles east of Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK.
It was totally amazing. I felt VERY blessed to be there. Even on wildlife programmes I've never seen anything quite like it. I thought that you needed to be in an 'exotic' part of the world to see things like this. The other unusual thing was that the sea was incredibly flat, even calmer than in a swimming pool, so I could get some good footage of the dolphins underwater.
Quite a few times the dolphins would swim on their sides to take a look at me, it's as though we somehow connected or communicated. They were as interested in us and the boat as we were in them. At 3:54 in the video, a dolphin swims on its side to take a look at me, they did this quite a few times. They were all around the boat as well, to the bow, stern and beam (both sides), even as far as 100 metres away. On the video if you look carefully, you can see some jumping in the distance. They jump or come to the surface for air, so for every 1 surfacing there's 10 to 20 below the surface.
They are rather special and clever creatures. We saw them as they are meant to be - free.
If you would like to learn to sail, then checkout this. I started off by completing a Day Skipper course. I ended up helping to crew for Melvyn on his yacht! www.northumbriasailing.co.uk/
I hope that you enjoy the video!

I have watched this video 4 times so far just being with them. They are so beautiful. I am in total awe of this. Also I am vegan and was thinking I need to go raw then that raw click here thing came up and I thought it is meant to be. I am going to try it as I know it gives you crazy energy. We must protect these beings and all that inhabit their earth. Planet Ocean.

Thanks. The dolphins were one of my most memorable times ever. If you can afford it, low fat raw vegan is the best. Don't starve or bankrupt yourself though. Eat cooked carbs if needed. Sorry for bit of a late response! I'm back on KZread, with only occasional postings at moment, under my renamed channel. I'm mainly doing cycling stuff at moment.

Ah - that's absolutely wonderful. How very special, it must have been one of the high points of the trip! I'm also digging the crusty sailor's beard you have grown - keep it! ;-)

@MrsLeafygreens The dolphins were totally amazing. I will cherish that time for ever. It's a miracle I even went sailing. I did a 'Day Skipper Theory course'. The course leader mentioned this trip and a crew member had dropped out. So I volunteered!. It was my first time away at sea and first time as a crew member. We covered almost 1000 miles in 2 weeks! We saw the dolphins on the last day. I felt so blessed :-)

@Guilhaz1 I've now had 2 independent people both with a keen interest in sea wildlife confirm that these are White Beaked Dolphins

Were those dusky dolphins or pacific white-sided dolphins?

I think neither. Someone once commented that they were bottlenose dolphins. Sorry for bit of a late response! I'm back on KZread, with only occasional postings at moment, under my renamed channel. I'm mainly doing cycling stuff at moment.
