I'm Stuart Porter and welcome to Ayup Stuggy! This channel is about adventure, health, fitness, or things that make us feel good. Ayup is a greeting often used in Yorkshire where I'm from and spent my youth. Stuggy is my nickname that some old friends have used since I was 7 years old. If you see me, then feel free to say "Ayup Stuggy"!
I started my KZread channel many years ago after I was ill with chronic fatigue, IBS and depression (plus other issues). Then I became substantially better after changing my diet and lifestyle. My health was transformed but work and other life's priorities had to take precedent so that I could earn a living and provide for my family. 13 years later, I'm still OK health wise and but now I'm trying to regain my fitness after easing off the work work work mentally.
My plan is to focus on cycling initially, and then hopefully get back into running once my fitness improves, and do other adventures too. Stay tuned, more videos are following soon.

Awesome video - great to recognise faces from NCC too !!!!!!!! 8-)
Thanks! It was a great challenge. Maybe see you at one another time :)
@@AyupStuggy I was meant to do this years, however I have committed to a new job role & didn't want to jinx it! I'm hoping I can enter the 2025 ;-)
Look out for when it comes out on Audax UK. If it's anything like this year, it will be fully booked within hours!
Well done sir!! 🎉
Thanks! Keep pedalling :)
A wonderful achievement! Congrats! And nice to meet you yesterday evening.
Hi Stephen. It was a pleasure to meet you. I just watched your videos and they are outstanding! You had an idea about 'collaboration'. If you fancy doing something together, then I'm up for that. I'm not sure how I can help improve your brilliant videos though. I might be able to add the character struggling up some hills! If you are up for a bike ride, then I'm definitely up for that. From your place, there's a brilliant cycle path all the way to Sunderland. We could go up the coast to South Shields, through the cycle tunnel to North Pier. Then back along the north riverside to Newcastle and all the bridges, then back via the Angel, and Birtley. It's a lovely route and fairly flat for most of it. To send me a personal message, do so via the Strava mobile phone app. I was fiddling with my bike when you were loading your car up. It was making a strange noise now and again. 2 miles later my chain snapped and it also mangled my front derailleur! A temp fix got me home.
@@AyupStuggy That sounds great - yeah I’d def be up for trying that at some point! Sorry to hear about your chain issues last night. Glad you got it fixed enough to get home!
Well done 👏🏼👏🏼🤠 Weardale is my favourite cycling area .. The Chapel Century is a fab route 🫶
Thanks. I love it up in Weardale and Teesdale. I've just got back from a ride up that way, From Durham to Stanhope, Rookhope and Blanchland. My chain snapped on the way back. A possible video may follow of that!
Chapeau for not quitting 👏🏼👏🏼🤠
Thanks! I surprised myself!!!
Awe inspiring. Just incredible.
Thanks Alan. That's really nice of you to say that. You've made my day!
That was a hard fought ride, Stu! Even harder doing it solo too! Chapeau! 🧢
There were lots of bits with other riders. The whole thing was a challenge, but that last 100km on my own really was a HARD challenge!
@@AyupStuggy takes and equal amount of mental strength (if not more) than physical that, mate. Great going. 💪🏻
Thanks! ... I'm just watching one of your videos again... How difficult can a 100 mile bike ride be? ... Fun with all the mates out with you :)
@@AyupStuggy cheers mate. Only half the distance of your ride that one but THAT was a struggle. 🥵
2:10 ‘for every downhill there’s an uphill’ The cyclists dilemma! 😂
Hahahah!
70k is too early for Jelly Babies, need to stay on proper food otherwise your body will just want sugar. I carry enough gear to fix likely issues plus have something warm/windproof/waterproof to put on while I do it. I'm a similar age to you and did a 300k at the beginning of the month, 200k suits me better 🙂
Thanks for your tips! I like your tip about taking proper food, which I do prefer. I shall try and be more organised next time and do that. 200K seemed impossible this time last year. It does seem significantly easier... although still hard!
Hi Stuart. Well done on completing that C2C2C. Looks like a great ride but pity about the downpour. I was interested in the final ride stats. Thats about the same average moving speed as myself over a number of Audaxes. So will consider this for next year. Hope to meet on an Audax at some point.
Thanks Andrew. Hot tip - be ready for when it opens, and submit your entry straight away. This year it was full the same day I think. Quite a few others have contacted me too, to say they and others are going to enter next year!
Well done. Hope you enjoyed the ride and the well deserved pie at the end. See you next year?
Thanks! I normally eat heaps of food, strangely I couldn't face much at the end. My digestion was playing up a bit on the way round. For the last 100km I barely ate any snacks. The crumble pudding still went down well though! I hope to be doing this ride next year too.
Dryer than last year, but heartening to see that Andy didn't let you down with the weather!
The weather made it all the more memorable!
Quite the ride! Congrats.
Thanks! :)
Chapeau!
Thank you :)
Well done
Thanks! :)
Well done. As a glasses wearer I find wearing a casquette really helps with peak down when riding in heavy rain
Thanks :) I was wondering why some riders where a cap under their helmet! I do have a clip on peak for my helmet, but don't like wearing it as it impedes my view slightly. I will have to consider buying a cap for my next big ride.
I did the coast to coast between Whitehaven and Redcar (125 miles) solo for charity in 6 hours 38 minutes in total, taking it easy and including 3 x short sandwich / drink stops.
You are fast! That is one of the more usual C2C routes. I've done the Sustrans C2C route twice, that's 137 miles each time in 3 days. I still have some way to go in my fitness journey to get my speed up and weight down. I'll be working on it! Keep pedalling :)
Well done!! Fab documentation and production!
Thanks! I've come a long way since the first 100 mile Audax attempt over a year ago! :) :) :)
Great effort Stuart, very impressive 👏
Thanks Peter! I look forward to seeing more of your artwork videos :)
You can always rely on the great British weather ☔️very well done 👍🎉🎉🎉
Thanks! The weather was rather interesting!!! Thankfully the rain eased off after Hexham.
Hello. Subscribed. How old are you?
Fifty something - I like to keep people guessing!. Thanks for subbing :)
What jacket is that?
'All day shell' from Galibier. Website link and exact part is in my video description. The easiest way to find it is to paste the description in the Galibier search box. The clothing is great, but site is difficult to navigate. The top has been fantastic! and it compacts to really small.
I've ran up that road to the top and back from Knock , 40 ,odd years ago It was in the evening and I remember being really cold on the way down .
Wow - that's impressive! I remember those days of my youth, doing amazing stuff with hardly any training. Now we really have to keep working hard at it!
brutal climb
It definitely was, the camera doesn't pick up most of it though! I'd like to try it again on fresher legs. :)
You say kilometres correctly 👍
Thanks! It's nice to know others say it the same way! It's a while since I did that ride, it brings back special memories :) That was my first 200km ride... I have my first 300km ride this weekend... help!!!
Enjoyed watching your video, you definitely get to know your local area with a 100 mile radius more than you would in a car. The distance you cycle amazes me 😊🚲🚴🚵🦙💪
Thanks Peter! It's a stunning area to cycle around, and well worth the effort. I'm managing to do some rides now that I only dreamed of before. I'm still no where near as fit as many of the other seasoned Audaxers though!
Well done.
Thanks John :) On Saturday, I did the 100 mile 'Chapel Century' Audax from the same place. It was such a beautiful ride. It took me 2 whole days to edit the video! It will hopefully be out 3pm UK time Friday (assuming the upload tonight goes ok). I explain more about Audaxing in it.
Could I enquire stuggy about your bike an what model is it, apart from it being a specialized..it seems to fit all rides regardless of Moor trail or road riding..great video.
Thanks John. It's a Specialised Diverge e5 gravel bike, and is very tough compared to road bikes! (apart from rear wheel spoke issues I had, but I've given it a lot of hammer!). I fitted some tough road tyres to it (Schwalbe Durano plus), and it still is ok on disused railway trails (apart from heavy gravel). There is a touring rack on the back, and an old mudguard that I cable tied to the rack, which works well. I use mountain bike shoes and pedals so that I can easily walk around when not on the bike. Since this video, I fixed the spoke, and another snapped on a recent ride, so I've had the rear wheel completely re-spoked. I did a shed load of miles on this in the pass year, so fitted a new Freehub. Overall it's lovely bike. My bike is the elite model, I could have saved a lot of money in going for the non elite model. The brakes and gears are nice though. I guess most gravel bikes, if fitted with tough road tyres would give the same gravel/road benefit. I was advised not to take a road bike on gravel, but a tougher gravel bike on the road with road tyres would be ok. I hope that helps!
@AyupStuggy Thanks stuggy I ride much like you trails and road, in and around Coldstream an the borders area on a genesis with 28 gatorskins on, ok till you hit mud deeper than 1/2 inch..Will look into what specialized offers price wise, thanks stuggy for your in depth info on the diverge range.
The Borders area is lovely to cycle around. I'm doing a few Audax rides and I did a video last year on my first 200km Audax in that area. If you do a search on Audax.uk for rides within 150km of you, you will see a few coming up. I have some 200km rides this summer in the NE/borders area too. I'm usually last or near to last :) There's some much fitter guys and girls doing this sort of thing! .... I try to keep out of the mud! My tyres are 700x28C size.
@AyupStuggy Thanks Stuggy will do.
Well done !!..great effort stuggy.😊
Thank you 😀 That was my hardest ever bike ride!
Great video, Stuggy! This is bringing back all the memories of climbing up GDF! Massive kudos for stopping and being able to get started again on those inclines, that's no mean feat! Even more kudos for putting the camera down for the B-roll of you cycling past, as I know you had to cycle back down to get the camera before carrying on! The trials and tribulations of being a KZreadr! Also, 3:55 'He's on an e-bike' said through gritted teeth! I felt your pain. 🤣 Spent a week staycation in Appleby a few years too and agree it's absolutely stunning. We even stopped at Hartside Summit on a scenic route back from Windermere to Appleby. Beautiful view that. Can't believe you did this as part of a 200km+ ride though and on a broken spoke for the last half. I barely managed the 8km GDF climb on its own. You'll smash that Audax. Chapeau, sir! 🧢
Thanks Peter! Not quite as polished as yours yet, but I'm learning how to do it. It's so time consuming editing. I started off with over 2 hours of footage, and it took me nearly 2 days to edit it down! I must try and do more videos and be more constant with them. I would have loved to have done more 'B-roll', but I was limited on time and still had another 100km to ride home!
Nice to meet you at the top and hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip back. We made the cut! 😊 Lois & Roger
Hi Lois and Roger! It was great to see you at the top of Great Dun Fell :) I started off with over 2 hours of footage, and it was a long job to edit it down, but I had to keep you two in! May our paths cross another time. Take care and happy pedalling :)
@AyupStuggy thank you! Yes, might see you on another epic ride one day 👍
I look forward to it :)
Wow well done. Love that area. Liked and subscribed ❤
Thanks for subbing! The North East is a fabulous area. I've just seen your Creswell beech video. I also did a video cycling to there from Durham! Subbed too :)
Looks like a lovely place to cycle, I enjoyed that thanks. Well done
Thanks! Have a blessed day :)
You always impress me with how far you ride, another awesome video 😍🚲
Thanks Peter! Yesterday I did a 200km ride from Ponteland to Newcastleton in Scotland and back. There was a brutal headwind on the way out! I took my camera, and may make a video on it. I will check out the footage first.
@@AyupStuggy 😲
Hi Peter. Have you seen my latest ride (Great Dun Fell video). It's even further! It's the hills that proved the challenge though.
Hats off to you for keeping going! I came off my e bike along a gravel path in summer, (shorts and t shirt) I hit a tree root and it knocked the handlebars clean out of my hands! I was thrown violently to the ground and had scraped my elbow and knee, like yourself, except the blood kept dripping from the elbow! I cycled to a local supermarket and used their toilets to remove the gravel from my arm and knee, it was excruciating! I then went in search of bandages and found some but could not lift my arm higher than my waist! Blood was still dripping from my arm onto the supermarket floor! A kind man saw my predicament and helped me put the bandage on. I suddenly fet very nauseous and nearly fainted at the check out. I rang my wife who picked me up in the car and demanded that I went to hospital, I refused! She took me anyway and I had broken my humerous! That was last September. I am just getting my arm back to 80% flexibility compared to how it was. I wish you a speedy recovery!!
Wow that sounds a terrible time that you've had! I hope and pray for a full recovery for you. I was protected massively by all my layers due to the cold. I dread to think what state I would have been in if I was in teashirt and shorts, or if there was other traffic around. I still have two holes in my knee where the skin was taken out, but at least it's stopped 'leaking' and I no longer needs a dressing. Incredibly, I have absolutely no bruising (I recon the Aloe Vera helped massively). It was 10 days ago when I did that ride and had that crash. I may venture out tomorrow for another ride. Thank for commenting. Take care!
Fabulous route, shame about the pot holes. Can't quite work out if you enjoyed that! 70 miles is about my limit. Keep up the good work.
I didn't enjoy falling off! However, at the start of the ride I felt quite tired, but after the physical challenge of those hills, I was pumped up and felt good. I nearly always feel better at the end of the ride than the beginning. I guess I must look disheveled though! ... Get a few 70 milers under your belt, then one day start early, take it easy and you'll do 100.
Why am I not getting sound on this vid?
Sorry you're having sound issues. I just checked the video in incognito mode, and the sound does work. Perhaps try this and investigate further... right click your desktop, select display settings, sound (that's how you get there on windows 10). All the best with it.
Thank you for this! Getting my channel going too and invested in an Action 3 to start the process. Thank you for you're reviews with your footage!
Hi Travis, thanks for your comment. On a later video (the 200km Audax ride) I tried a different audio method, which was more for convenience in recording. I made a windslayer by sticking double sided foam tape over the camera mic's (holes were punched in appropriate positions in the foam tape beforehand). Then I stuck on top of that a small length of foam from a kitchen pan scrubber! All the audio in that video is from the Action3 built in mic's. The camera was tucked away in my rear cycle jersey pocket. For all the clips, I pulled it out with one hand, and pressed the one touch record button with the same hand. I used the protective cage too, as it made it easier to hold. Perhaps I should do a video of that homemade wind slayer?... when I'm not so busy! Have fun in your video making and be blessed! Stuart (AKA Stuggy!)
@@AyupStuggy That would be awesome Stuggy! I always enjoy making my own modifications as well. Maybe it's a sense of accomplishment or maybe it's just my OCD! LOL!
Great video, welldone on the 200k. Looked alot of fun.
Thanks Ryan! That means a lot. One day I will get more consistent at this and make some more videos. Next year in July, I'm booked in for a 300km C2C2C Audax. That will be the longest ever ride for me, From the northeast coast, to north west coast and back! For up and coming rides, check out Audax.uk. You might find a good ride in your area that you like. Keep pedalling!
@@AyupStuggy good luck in your training. Amazing challenge.
@@RyanCondon Thanks! You too :)
Epic! That looked like a ton of fun, and looked like you had some excellent company with you as well.
It was heaps of fun. It makes all the difference to cycle with lovely people. I've struggled keeping up in the past, but my fitness has come on a long way over the summer and I surprised myself in this event. I've now bought a smart trainer to get me through the winter, hence my interest in your video. I'll keep training, and maybe one day I'll be able to keep up with you! Stuggy :)
Great to ride with you. And lovely video which helps explain audax to the uninitiated 😂. We had so much fun that day - hope to ride with you again 👍🏻👍🏻
Ay up Sue :) That would be great!👍It was such fun cycling with you and the others. Saturday was a special and momentous day. I broke this mental 200km block in my mind, and made great friends in the process. 🚴🚴♂🚴♀🚴(me at the rear!)
A bit improvement in the wind noise I,d say.
Thanks :) On my 200km ride posted yesterday, I tried another fix out. I carried my Action 3, with a bit of foam double side tape with holes in it, and stuck on a bit of a pan scrubber over the camera's mic holes! That worked well too, although not as brilliant as the lav/lapel mic option.
@@AyupStuggy Great bodging, I suppose the wind sounds only a problem when you have to talk over it.
@@randelscyclevlogperthwa7342 Yes definitely. It's often a compromise between, having a perfect setup, or having something that's ok and not getting in the way.
Congrats on finishing the ride, having a fun group of cyclists helps.
Thanks! It certainly does, they were brilliant!
Great achievement, well done , loved the sheep 😂
Thanks! It was very memorable. It's great to see your channel growing. You are a very talented artist :)
Another cracking day in our wonderful summer we had…not!
The ride back was a downpour! I have some amazing footage of it, but wasn't sure what to do with it as the sound is so awful. A week later, the weather was even worse when I did a 100km Audax ride in Weardale, as it rained constantly and there was a strong wind in the hills. I made a video of that, it comes out tomorrow at 2pm UK time. One day I will make a video when it is sunny!
Stuart Porter, are you still around?
I am now. I'm back on KZread after long absence, now with renamed channel :)
Good video mate..Himalayan salt minerals
Thanks! ...sorry for bit of a late response! I'm back on KZread, with only occasional postings at moment, under my renamed channel.
Are you still classed as a vagan then..
Do you still cycle...?
Apologies for my rather late response! Yes, I'm back on KZread after a 12 year absence, with renamed channel. I will focus on cycling, other adventures, getting fitter, health and general feel good stuff.
This was basically a how to in setting up a raised bed garden along with keeping the rows from getting muddy. There wasn't a lot on actually conditioning the soil. But, there were good tips for me with the clay soil where I am
Thanks :)..... sorry for bit of a late response! I'm back on KZread, with only occasional postings at moment, under my renamed channel. I'm maninly doing cycling stuff at moment.
